Normal Methods of Teaching by Edward Brooks Pdf

Excerpt from Normal Methods of Teaching: Containing a Brief Statement of the Principles and Methods of the Science and Art of Teaching, for the Use of Normal Classes and Private Students Preparing Themselves for Teachers Teaching is a Science and an Art. It embraces a system of truths that admit of scientific statement and may be woven together with the thread of philosophic principles. As such it may be taught like other sciences and arts, and may thus be presented in a book to be studied. The present volume is the result of an earnest attempt to give a scientific statement to the subject in a form that can be used in the training of teachers. Object. - The work is designed as a d104-Book on Teaching. It is a work to be studied and mastered by those who are preparing themselves to teach in our public schools. Several good books on the subject have been written from the standpoint of the profession for professional readers; this work is written from the standpoint of the class-room, for those who are being trained for the profession. Its-design is not so much to adorn the literature of the profession as to aid in building up the profession. The aim has been to prepare a work suitable for the use of the classes in our Normal Schools, - a work that can be studied and recited like a text-book on grammar or arithmetic. Origin. - The work grew up in the class-room. The matter was originally prepared for my own "teaching classes," and has been used by them for many years. Primarily, it was given orally to the classes, the pupils being required to write down only the leading definitions and principles and an outline of the discussions. Recently it became necessary to divide these classes and place them in charge of assistant teachers. For the use of these assistants the notes were expanded into a little treatise which the pupils were required to copy and recite. So inconvenient was this, and so much valuable time was lost, that I resolved to comply with the request of teachers and pupils and put the matter in a form for publication. Importance. - The need of such a text-book cannot be questioned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Research-Based Practices for Teaching Common Core Literacy by P. David Pearson,Elfrieda H. Hiebert Pdf

This one-of-a-kind resource will be invaluable to every teacher educator, every curriculum director, and every literacy coach, whether or not they must meet Common Core Standards. Bringing together perspectives from literacy luminaries, each addressing their specialty, this book offers an accessible fund of rich practices in literacy instruction. The book serves two purposes: First, it assembles a body of knowledge and wisdom from leading literacy researchers who each draw from a long career in the field to address topics of central importance to good literacy instruction. Second, these research-to-practice leaders connect established best practices and foundational research to the current challenge of instruction to meet Common Core Standards and other rigorous curriculum guidelines. The contributors point out strengths of the Common Core as well as issues and oversights that educators should be aware of. Closing chapters situate the Common Core within a continuum of educational policy and legislation. Contributors: Richard L. Allington, Monica T. Billen, Jay S. Blanchard, Robert Calfee, Gina N. Cervetti, Michael F. Graves, John T. Guthrie, Elfrieda H. Hiebert, James V. Hoffman, Rosalind Horowitz, Michael L. Kamil, Barbara Kapinus, Richard Long, Leigh Ann Martin, Kimberly McCuiston, James Nageldinger, David Paige, P. David Pearson, Timothy Rasinski, S. Jay Samuels, Barbara Taylor, Joanna P. Williams, Kathleen Wilson “Pearson and Hiebert have long advocated for children in schools, and this volume is no exception. They and their chapter authors situate the CCSS within the historical and policy context in which it was written and support the literacy education community as we wrestle with the implications the standards have for research, for teachers, for teaching, and for learning.” —Sharon Walpole, University of Delaware “This book gets way beyond generalities and polemics about the Common Core, taking a deep and measured dive into a wide range of essential topics within the standards. I read a lot, and I can't think of the last time I read anything about the CCSS as engaging and thought provoking as this.” —Nell K. Duke, University of Michigan
