This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ...C, Path of dancers in structure. The closing song contains only two tones, is simple in rhythm, and has a drumbeat in unaccented eighth notes, the other songs having a drumbeat in quarter notes. The accompanying instrument was a hand drum. Analysis.--We have before us for consideration two renditions of a song by the same singer (cf. Nos. 77, 78), the first rendition being recorded in 1914 and the second in 1916. The duplication was accidental, which adds to the interest of the comparison. On the first occasion the song was sung three times and on the second it was sung twice. Comparing the transcriptions of the two renditions, we find in the second a more regular rhythm and also an ornamentation of the melody, as in the third measure. The firstnamed peculiarity is shown by the presence of rhythmic units, the latter by a larger proportion of whole-tone progressions. Inquiry was made concerning the life of the singer during the two years elapsing between the making of the records, as the rhythm might possibly be influenced by an adaptation to the ways of the white man. The Government officials on the reservation were, however, of the opinion that no appreciable change had taken place in the singer and the difference in the records was attributed by them to a difference in mood at the time of recording. On comparing the analyses of the two renditions, we find the following resemblances and differences: RESEMBLANCES Tonality Major. First tone Octave. Last tone Fifth. Compass 12 tones. Tone material Octave complete except seventh. Structure Melodic. First progression Upward. Time of first measure 2-4. DIFFERENCES 'Interesting features of the second rendition are the first and second endings and the connective phrase. In both renditions the...

Encyclopedia of Native American Music of North America by Timothy Archambault,Elaine Keillor,John M. H. Kelly Pdf

This book is a one-stop reference resource for the vast variety of musical expressions of the First Peoples' cultures of North America, both past and present. Encyclopedia of Native American Music of North America documents the surprisingly varied musical practices among North America's First Peoples, both historically and in the modern context. It supplies a detailed yet accessible and approachable overview of the substantial contributions and influence of First Peoples that can be appreciated by both native and nonnative audiences, regardless of their familiarity with musical theory. The entries address how ethnomusicologists with Native American heritage are revolutionizing approaches to the discipline, and showcase how musicians with First Peoples' heritage are influencing modern musical forms including native flute, orchestral string playing, gospel, and hip hop. The work represents a much-needed academic study of First Peoples' musical cultures—a subject that is of growing interest to Native Americans as well as nonnative students and readers.

North American Indian Music by Richard Keeling Pdf

First Published in 1997. The present volume contains references and descriptive annotations for 1,497 sources on North American Indian and Eskimo music. As conceived here, the subject encompasses works on dance, ritual, and other aspects of religion or culture related to music, and selected "classic" recordings have also been included. The coverage is equally broad in other respects, including writings in several different languages and spanning a chronological period from 1535 to 1995. The book is intended as a reference tool for researchers, teachers, and college students. With their needs in mind, the sources are arranged in ten sections by culture area, and the introduction includes a general history of research. Finally, there are also indices by author, tribe, and subject.

Travels with Frances Densmore by Joan M. Jensen,Michelle Wick Patterson Pdf

Over the first half of the twentieth century, scientist and scholar Frances Densmore (1867–1957) visited thirty-five Native American tribes, recorded more than twenty-five hundred songs, amassed hundreds of artifacts and Native-crafted objects, and transcribed information about Native cultures. Her visits to indigenous groups included meetings with the Ojibwes, Lakotas, Dakotas, Northern Utes, Ho-chunks, Seminoles, and Makahs. A “New Woman” and a self-trained anthropologist, she not only influenced government attitudes toward indigenous cultures but also helped mold the field of anthropology. Densmore remains an intriguing historical figure. Although researchers use her vast collections at the Smithsonian and Minnesota Historical Society, as well as her many publications, some scholars critique her methods of “salvage anthropology” and concepts of the “vanishing” Native American. Travels with Frances Densmore is the first detailed study of her life and work. Through narrative descriptions of her life paired with critical essays about her work, this book is an essential guide for understanding how Densmore formed her collections and the lasting importance they have had for researchers in a variety of fields.
