Angular Momentum in Quantum Mechanics by A. R. Edmonds Pdf

This book offers a concise introduction to the angular momentum, one of the most fundamental quantities in all of quantum mechanics. Beginning with the quantization of angular momentum, spin angular momentum, and the orbital angular momentum, the author goes on to discuss the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for a two-component system. After developing the necessary mathematics, specifically spherical tensors and tensor operators, the author then investigates the 3-j, 6-j, and 9-j symbols. Throughout, the author provides practical applications to atomic, molecular, and nuclear physics. These include partial-wave expansions, the emission and absorption of particles, the proton and electron quadrupole moment, matrix element calculation in practice, and the properties of the symmetrical top molecule.

Quantum Theory Of Angular Momemtum by V K Khersonskii,A N Moskalev,D A Varshalovich Pdf

This is the most complete handbook on the quantum theory of angular momentum. Containing basic definitions and theorems as well as relations, tables of formula and numerical tables which are essential for applications to many physical problems, the book is useful for specialists in nuclear and particle physics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, plasma physics, collision and reaction theory, quantum chemistry, etc. The authors take pains to write many formulae in different coordinate systems thus providing users with added ease in consulting this book. Each chapter opens with a comprehensive list of its contents to ease the search for any information needed later. New results relating to different aspects of the angular momentum thoery are also included. Containing close to 500 pages this book also gathers together many useful formulae besides those related to angular momentum. The book also compares different notations used by previous authors.

Lectures On Quantum Mechanics by Gordon Baym Pdf

These lecture notes comprise a three-semester graduate course in quantum mechanics at the University of Illinois. There are a number of texts which present the basic topics very well; but since a fair quantity of the material discussed in my course was not available to the students in elementary quantum mechanics books, I was asked to prepare written notes. In retrospect these lecture notes seemed sufficiently interesting to warrant their publication in this format. The notes, presented here in slightly revised form, consitutute a self-contained course in quantum mechanics from first principles to elementary and relativistic one-particle mechanics. Prerequisite to reading these notes is some familiarity with elementary quantum mechanics, at least at the undergraduate level. Preferably the reader should already have met the uncertainty principle and the concept of a wave function. Prerequisites also include sufficient acquaintance with complex cariables to be able to do simple contour integrals and to understand words such as "poles" and "branch cuts." An elementary knowledge of Fourier transforms and series is necessary. I also assume an awareness of classical electrodynamics.

Angular Momentum Techniques in Quantum Mechanics by V. Devanathan Pdf

A course in angular momentum techniques is essential for quantitative study of problems in atomic physics, molecular physics, nuclear physics and solid state physics. This book has grown out of such a course given to the students of the M. Sc. and M. Phil. degree courses at the University of Madras. An elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics is an essential pre-requisite to undertake this course but no knowledge of group theory is assumed on the part of the readers. Although the subject matter has group-theoretic origin, special efforts have been made to avoid the gro- theoretical language but place emphasis on the algebraic formalism dev- oped by Racah (1942a, 1942b, 1943, 1951). How far I am successful in this project is left to the discerning reader to judge. After the publication of the two classic books, one by Rose and the other by Edmonds on this subject in the year 1957, the application of angular momentum techniques to solve physical problems has become so common that it is found desirable to organize a separate course on this subject to the students of physics. It is to cater to the needs of such students and research workers that this book is written. A large number of questions and problems given at the end of each chapter will enable the reader to have a clearer understanding of the subject.

Quantum Theory of Angular Momentum by K. Srinivasa Rao,V. Rajeswari Pdf

The foundation for the quantum theory of angular momentum, as an integral part of quantum mechanics, was laid in the 1920's which whitnessed profound theoretical developments. For the atomic, molecular and nuclear physicist, the quantum theory of angular momentum is an indispensable and essential discipline. The discovery of new symmetries of the Clebsch-Gordan and Racah coefficients, overlooked in the course of time, provided the impetus to congently present the intimate connection between angular-momentum coefficients and the theory of generalized hypergeometric functions. Throughout this monograph, emphasis is placed on a good exposition of any aspect of the theory in order to be reliablewith respect to notations, phase factors and numerical factors. The monograph also provides complete solutions to some of the major problems of angular-momentum quantum theory. The topics selected cover: Connection between angular-momentum coefficient, relation between angular-momentum coefficients and orthogonal polynomial, plynomial zeros of angular-momentum coefficients, numerical algorithms for the generation of polynomial zeros and the computation of angular-momentum coefficients based on sets of generalized hypergeometric functions, and q-generalizations of angular-momentum coefficients.

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics by Henrik Smith Pdf

The book is an introduction to quantum mechanics at a level suitable for the second year in a European university (junior or senior year in an American college). The matrix formulation of quantum mechanics is emphasized throughout, and the student is introduced to Dirac notation from the start. A number of major examples illustrate the workings of quantum mechanics. Several of these examples are taken from solid state physics, with the purpose of showing that quantum mechanics forms the common basis for understanding atoms, molecules and condensed matter. The book contains an introductory chapter which puts the concepts of quantum mechanics into a historical framework. The solid-state applications discussed in this text include the quantum Hall effect, spin waves, quantum wells and energy bands. Other examples feature the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator, coherent states, two-electron atoms, the ammonia molecule and the chemical bond. A large number of homework problems are included.

Quantum Mechanics, Second edition by Paul C.W. Davies Pdf

Quantum mechanics is the key to modern physics and chemistry, yet it is notoriously difficult to understand. This book is designed to overcome that obstacle. Clear and concise, it provides an easily readable introduction intended for science undergraduates with no previous knowledge of quantum theory, leading them through to the advanced topics usually encountered at the final year level.Although the subject matter is standard, novel techniques have been employed that considerably simplify the technical presentation. The authors use their extensive experience of teaching and popularizing science to explain the many difficult, abstract points of the subject in easily comprehensible language. Helpful examples and thorough sets of exercises are also given to enable students to master the subject.

Lectures on Quantum Mechanics by Ashok Das Pdf

This set of lecture notes on quantum mechanics aims to teach, in a simple and straightforward manner, the basic theory behind the subject, drawing on examples from all fields of physics to provide both background as well as context. The self-contained book includes a review of classical mechanics and some of the necessary mathematics. Both the standard fare of quantum mechanics texts — the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom, angular momentum as well as topics such as symmetry with a discussion on periodic potentials, the relativistic electron, spin and scattering theory are covered. Approximation methods are discussed with a view to applications; these include stationary perturbation theory, the WKB approximation, time dependent perturbations and the variational principle. Together, the seventeen chapters provide a very comprehensive introduction to quantum mechanics. Selected problems are collected at the end of each chapter in addition to the numerous exercises sprinkled throughout the text. The book is written in a simple and elegant style, and is characterized by clarity, depth and excellent pedagogical organization.
