Numbers in Motion by Laurie Wallmark Pdf

"This picture book traces the impressive career of Sophie Kowalevski, the first woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics requiring original research. As a girl, Sophie is fascinated by the equations her father uses to wallpaper her room. She proves herself a prodigy, and tutors are impressed enough to give her private lessons. Despite universities that refuse to allow women on campus or to pay them to teach, Sophie is able to distinguish herself with her research into partial differential equations. Sophie receives a doctorate and becomes the first female professional mathematician in Northern Europe. The book mentions several of Kowalevski's mathematical contributions and closes with an encouraging message about women in mathematics"--

Motion and Genetic Definitions in the Sixteenth-Century Euclidean Tradition by Angela Axworthy Pdf

A significant number of works have set forth, over the past decades, the emphasis laid by seventeenth-century mathematicians and philosophers on motion and kinematic notions in geometry. These works demonstrated the crucial role attributed in this context to genetic definitions, which state the mode of generation of geometrical objects instead of their essential properties. While the growing importance of genetic definitions in sixteenth-century commentaries on Euclid’s Elements has been underlined, the place, uses and status of motion in this geometrical tradition has however never been thoroughly and comprehensively studied. This book therefore undertakes to fill a gap in the history of early modern geometry and philosophy of mathematics by investigating the different treatments of motion and genetic definitions by seven major sixteenth-century commentators on Euclid’s Elements, from Oronce Fine (1494–1555) to Christoph Clavius (1538–1612), including Jacques Peletier (1517–1582), John Dee (1527–1608/1609) and Henry Billingsley (d. 1606), among others. By investigating the ontological and epistemological conceptions underlying the introduction and uses of kinematic notions in their interpretation of Euclidean geometry, this study displays the richness of the conceptual framework, philosophical and mathematical, inherent to the sixteenth-century Euclidean tradition and shows how it contributed to a more generalised acceptance and promotion of kinematic approaches to geometry in the early modern period.

The Brownian Motion by Andreas Löffler,Lutz Kruschwitz Pdf

This open access textbook is the first to provide Business and Economics Ph.D. students with a precise and intuitive introduction to the formal backgrounds of modern financial theory. It explains Brownian motion, random processes, measures, and Lebesgue integrals intuitively, but without sacrificing the necessary mathematical formalism, making them accessible for readers with little or no previous knowledge of the field. It also includes mathematical definitions and the hidden stories behind the terms discussing why the theories are presented in specific ways.

General Problem of the Stability Of Motion by A M Lyapunov Pdf

This book makes more widely accessible the text of Lyapunov's major memoir of the general problem of the stability of motion. Translated by A. T. Fuller (University of Cambridge), the work is now available for the first time in the English language, and marked the centenary of the Russian publication in the late 1800s. Including a biography of Lyapunov and a comprehensive bibliography of his work, this excellent volume will prove to be of fundamental interest to all those concerned with the concept of the stability of motion, boundaries of stability, and with nonlinear dynamics.

Prediction and Classification of Respiratory Motion by Suk Jin Lee,Yuichi Motai Pdf

This book describes recent radiotherapy technologies including tools for measuring target position during radiotherapy and tracking-based delivery systems. This book presents a customized prediction of respiratory motion with clustering from multiple patient interactions. The proposed method contributes to the improvement of patient treatments by considering breathing pattern for the accurate dose calculation in radiotherapy systems. Real-time tumor-tracking, where the prediction of irregularities becomes relevant, has yet to be clinically established. The statistical quantitative modeling for irregular breathing classification, in which commercial respiration traces are retrospectively categorized into several classes based on breathing pattern are discussed as well. The proposed statistical classification may provide clinical advantages to adjust the dose rate before and during the external beam radiotherapy for minimizing the safety margin. In the first chapter following the Introduction to this book, we review three prediction approaches of respiratory motion: model-based methods, model-free heuristic learning algorithms, and hybrid methods. In the following chapter, we present a phantom study—prediction of human motion with distributed body sensors—using a Polhemus Liberty AC magnetic tracker. Next we describe respiratory motion estimation with hybrid implementation of extended Kalman filter. The given method assigns the recurrent neural network the role of the predictor and the extended Kalman filter the role of the corrector. After that, we present customized prediction of respiratory motion with clustering from multiple patient interactions. For the customized prediction, we construct the clustering based on breathing patterns of multiple patients using the feature selection metrics that are composed of a variety of breathing features. We have evaluated the new algorithm by comparing the prediction overshoot and the tracking estimation value. The experimental results of 448 patients’ breathing patterns validated the proposed irregular breathing classifier in the last chapter.

Stability of Motion by Wolfgang Hahn Pdf

The theory of the stability of motion has gained increasing signifi cance in the last decades as is apparent from the large number of publi cations on the subject. A considerable part of this work is concerned with practical problems, especially problems from the area of controls and servo-mechanisms, and concrete problems from engineering were the ones which first gave the decisin' impetus for the expansion and modern development of stability theory. In comparison with the many single publications, which are num bered in the thousands, the number of books on stability theory, and especially books not \\Titten in Russian, is extraordinarily small. Books which giw the student a complete introduction into the topic and which simultaneously familiarize him with the newer results of the theory and their applications to practical questions are completely lacking. I hope that the book which I hereby present will to some extent do justice to this double task. I haw endeavored to treat stability theory as a mathe matical discipline, to characterize its methods, and to prove its theorems rigorollsly and completely as mathematical theorems. Still I always strove to make reference to applications, to illustrate the arguments with examples, and to stress the interaction between theory and practice. The mathematical preparation of the reader should consist of about two to three years of university mathematics.
