Numerical Simulation of the Aerodynamics of High-Lift Configurations by Omar Darío López Mejia,Jaime A. Escobar Gomez Pdf

This book deals with numerical simulations and computations of the turbulent flow around high-lift configurations commonly used in aircraft. It is devoted to the Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) method using full Navier-Stokes solvers typically used in the simulation of high-lift configuration. With the increase of computational resources in the aeronautical industry, the computation of complex flows such as the aerodynamics of high-lift configurations has become an active field not only in academic but also in industrial environments. The scope of the book includes applications and topics of interest related to the simulation of high-lift configurations such as: lift and drag prediction, unsteady aerodynamics, low Reynolds effects, high performance computing, turbulence modelling, flow feature visualization, among others. This book gives a description of the state-of-the-art of computational models for simulation of high-lift configurations. It also shows and discusses numerical results and validation of these computational models. Finally, this book is a good reference for graduate students and researchers interested in the field of simulation of high-lift configurations.

This volume contains results of the German CFD initiative MEGADESIGN which combines CFD development activities from DLR, universities and aircraft industry. Based on the DLR flow solvers FLOWer and TAU the main objectives of the four-years project is to ensure the prediction accuracy with a guaranteed error bandwidth for certain aircraft configurations at design conditions, to reduce the simulation turn-around time for large-scale applications significantly, to improve the reliability of the flow solvers for full aircraft configurations in the complete flight regime, to extend the flow solvers to allow for multidisciplinary simulations and to establish numerical shape optimization as a vital tool within the aircraft design process. This volume highlights recent improvements and enhancements of the flow solvers as well as new developments with respect to aerodynamic and multidisciplinary shape optimization. Improved numerical simulation capabilities are demonstrated by several industrial applications.

NAS Technical Summaries. Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Program, March 1992 - February 1993 by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Pdf

NASA created the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Program in 1987 to focus resources on solving critical problems in aeroscience and related disciplines by utilizing the power of the most advanced supercomputers available. The NAS Program provides scientists with the necessary computing power to solve today's most demanding computational fluid dynamics problems and serves as a pathfinder in integrating leading-edge supercomputing technologies, thus benefitting other supercomputer centers in government and industry. The 1992-93 operational year concluded with 399 high-speed processor projects and 91 parallel projects representing NASA, the Department of Defense, other government agencies, private industry, and universities. This document provides a glimpse at some of the significant scientific results for the year. Computational Aerodynamic Modeling of Aerospace Vehicles by Mehdi Ghoreyshi,Karl Jenkins Pdf

Currently, the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions is considered as the state-of-the-art in the modeling of unsteady nonlinear flow physics and offers an early and improved understanding of air vehicle aerodynamics and stability and control characteristics. This Special Issue covers recent computational efforts on simulation of aerospace vehicles including fighter aircraft, rotorcraft, propeller driven vehicles, unmanned vehicle, projectiles, and air drop configurations. The complex flow physics of these configurations pose significant challenges in CFD modeling. Some of these challenges include prediction of vortical flows and shock waves, rapid maneuvering aircraft with fast moving control surfaces, and interactions between propellers and wing, fluid and structure, boundary layer and shock waves. Additional topic of interest in this Special Issue is the use of CFD tools in aircraft design and flight mechanics. The problem with these applications is the computational cost involved, particularly if this is viewed as a brute-force calculation of vehicle’s aerodynamics through its flight envelope. To make progress in routinely using of CFD in aircraft design, methods based on sampling, model updating and system identification should be considered.

Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows by T. Cebeci Pdf

This volume contains revised and edited forms of papers presented at the Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, held at the California State University from 19 to 21 January 1981. The Symposium was organized to bring together leading research workers in those aspects of aerodynamic flows represented by the five parts and to fulfill the following purposes : first, to allow the presentation of technical papers which provide a basis for research workers to assess the present status of the subject and to formulate priorities for the future; and second, to promote informal discussion and thereby to assist the communication and develop ment of novel concepts. The format ofthe content ofthe volume is similar to that ofthe Symposium and addresses, in separate parts: Numerical Fluid Dynamics, Interactive Steady Boundary Layers, Singularities in Unsteady Boundary Layers, Transonic Flows, and Experimental Fluid Dynamics. The motivation for most of the work described relates to the internal and extern al aerodynamics of aircraft and to the development and appraisal of design methods based on numerical solutions to conservation equations in differential forms, for corresponding components. The chapters concerned with numerical fluid dynamics can, perhaps, be interpreted in a more general context, but the emphasis on boundary-Iayer flows and the special consideration oftransonic flows reflects the interest in external flows and the recent advances which have allowed the calculation methods to encompass transonic regions.

Simulation-Driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable-Fidelity Models by Leifur Leifsson,Slawomir Koziel Pdf

Computer simulations is a fundamental tool of the design process in many engineering disciplines including aerospace engineering. However, although high-fidelity numerical models are accurate, they can be computationally expensive with evaluation time for a single design as long as hours, days or even weeks. Simulation-driven design using conventional optimization techniques may be therefore prohibitive. This book explores the alternative: performing computationally efficient design using surrogate-based optimization, where the high-fidelity model is replaced by its computationally cheap but still reasonably accurate representation: a surrogate. The emphasis is on physics-based surrogates. Application-wise, the focus is on aerodynamics and the methods and techniques described in the book are demonstrated using aerodynamic shape optimization cases. Applications in other engineering fields are also demonstrated. State-of-the-art techniques and a depth of coverage never published before make this a unique and essential book for all researchers working in aerospace and other engineering areas and dealing with optimization, computationally expensive design problems, and simulation-driven design.
