Refinements and continued operation of the combination H alpha prominence and green coronal camera provided motion pictures and daily surveys of prominences and corona. The H alpha flare patrol underwent significant improvements, and data acquisition rates were increased. Patrol observers became further engaged in both flare warning and subjective prediction services. Spectrographic observations of the solar corona and transient limb phenomena provided a continuation of routinely observed green and red coronal emission lines as well as a vast collection of special observations of bright limb phenomena. A white-light sunspot camera gave pictures of sunspots, granulation, and fine structure. Various theoretical and analysis studies were undertaken, based on the extensive patrol data, and on data from the Sacramento Peak 16-inch coronagraph and coelostat systems and their auxiliary spectrographs. The Sun is the brightest and most accessible object in the sky, and it has much to offer the amateur astronom er with modest equipment. On most days it shows sunspots and other features that displaya wealth of fine detail and change their appearance strikingly from day to day. But observing the Sun can be dangerous. NEVER look at the Sun through a telescope or other optical aid, even for a brief instant. The Sun's intense radiation, amplified and focused by a telescope, will almost certainly cause eye injury and could weIl lead to complete blindness. Do not attempt any solar observing until you have read and understood the safety precautions and observing advice set out in Chapter 2 of this book - even if you think you have the correct equipment. Be especially wary about using filters to observe the Sun. If you have a filter that makes the Sun look dark, it is not necessarily safe, as it is largely the Sun's invisible radiation that is harmful to the eye. But provided you use the correct techniques, such as projecting the solar image onto a screen or using a specially designed, quality solar filter that fits over the telescope aperture, it is quite easy to observe the Sun safely.

The advent of manned space flights has focused attention on the biological threat posed by solar proton flares. In an effort to close one of the gaps in the observation of the solar spectrum, AFCRL has initiated a high resolution millimeter wavelength solar observation program. This report covers the observational approach and initial findings of this program based upon observations from May to December 1968. The equipment and procedures used to produce spectroheliograms at 8.6 mm, using the AFCRL 29-ft Millimeter Wave Antenna, are described. The quiet sun at 8.6 mm appeared to have a brightness temperature of 8400 plus or minus 600 K blackbody and a 'radio diameter' 3 percent greater than the optical disk. The presence of active regions during this period was characterized by localized enhanced regions exhibiting temperature increases from 1 to 28 percent of the quiet sun level. The enhancement and the positions of these regions have been compared with 9.1-cm radio data and various other optical data. The locations of the 8.6-mm enhanced regions are contained within calcium plages. All proton events observed originated only in highly enhanced (Class III) regions. Further observations are in progress to increase the sample size of observed proton events to further refine the possibility of prediction of these events. (Author).
