The Reason of Schooling by Thomas S. Popkewitz Pdf

Problematizing the "reason" of schooling as historical and political, in this book leading international and interdisciplinary scholars challenge the common sense of schooling and the relation of society, education, and curriculum studies. Examining the limits of contemporary notions of power and schooling, the argument is that the principles that order school subjects, the curriculum, and teaching reforms are historical practices that govern what is thought, acted on, and talked about. Highlighting the dynamics of social exclusion, the normalizing of people through curriculum, and questions of social inclusion, The "Reason" of Schooling underscores the urgency for rethinking curriculum research.

Samuel Richardson's Introduction to Pamela by Samuel Richardson Pdf

Since most publishers of Pamela have preferred to print Richardson’s table of contents from the sixth edition, his complete introduction (his preface, together with letters to the editor and comments) is missing even from some of our best collections. Occasionally one finds the preface and the first two letters, but only four publishers since Richardson have attempted to reprint the full introduction. Harrison (London, 1785) -- who omits the first letter -- and Cooke (London, 1802-3) both follow Richardson’s eighth edition; Ballantyne (Edinburgh, 1824) uses the fourth; the Shakespeare Head (Oxford, 1929), the third. And even these printings leave one dissatisfied. The Shakespeare Head gives the fullest text, but naturally omits Richardson’s revisions; Cooke gives the introduction in its final form, but one misses the full text which accompanied the book in its heyday; and rarely are both Cooke and Shakespeare Head to be found in the same library.

Poeta de Tristibus; Or, The Poet's Complaint is a lengthy satirical poem by an unknoiwn author. Excerpt: "I hardly a poor Lawyer know, Unless some who are Poets too. They thrive by Rapine and Revenge, And making Enemies of Friends: Feeding on others hopes and fears, On Orphants groans, and Widows tears. In short, the World it self; and all We Trade, and Art, and Science call, Are grand Impostures; false and vain, Invented but to bring in gain."

The Art of English Poetry (1708) by Edward active 1702-1712 Bysshe Pdf

'The Art of English Poetry' may be roughly described as an English version of the 'Gradus ad Parnassum'. At least that is the tradition to which it belongs. Its immediate predecessor was the pleasant 'English Parnassus: Or, a Helpe to English Poesie' compiled by a Middlesex schoolmaster named Joshua Poole, and this work was avowedly modeled on Ravisius Textor's 'Epitheta' and the 'Thesaurus Poeticu's of Joannes Buchler. But whereas the 'English Parnassus' was designed for the schoolroom, 'The Art of English Poetry' was designed for the world of polite letters, and so may be called the first example in English of the handbook for the serious poet.

A Satyr Against Hypocrites by John Phillips Pdf

A Satyr Against Hypocrites was John Phillips' anonymous poem entered in the Stationers' Register on March 14, 1654-55 as the work of his brother Edward Phillips. It was considered a bitter attack on Puritanism at that time. A Satyr Against Hypocrites, in reality, was regarded a little more than the irresponsible outburst of an immature man of twenty-three who was tired of discipline, dissatisfied in his expectations of political advancement, and furious with the sort of people who had taken over the country but who seemed incapable of appreciating his peculiar merits. In 1661 A Satyr Against Hypocrites was republished as The Religion of the Hypocritical Presbyterians, which was assumed to be no more than an attempt to lure new interest with a title that would appeal to the post-Restoration preference to criticize the strongest of the Puritan sects. It is believed that John Phillips was an unofficial secretary to Milton but, was unable to obtain regular political employment
