Three Great Battles (Classic Reprint) by John H. B. Latrobe Pdf

Excerpt from Three Great Battles The following articles were published soon after the events described in them, and are reprinted now to supply an occasional demand among the writer's friends. The account of the Battle of Buena Vista was prepared from the detailed reports of the different commanders, with the aid of Carleton's Book, and verbal descriptions from parties present in the fight. General Taylor expressed himself satisfied with its accuracy; and it obtained the very undeserved credit, at the time, of being the production of an eye witness. Many years after the account of the Battle of Buena Vista was written, the writer was struck, as he read Thiers' Consulate and Empire, with the extraordinary similarity that existed between the Battle of Buena Vista and the Battle of Marengo, even in the fact that while Marengo made Buonaparte' Emperor, Buena Vista made Taylor President. Battles of English History (Classic Reprint) by Hereford B. George Pdf

Excerpt from Battles of English History Battles are the most generally interesting class of events in history, and not without reason. Until mankind have all been reduced to a single pattern, which would put an end to history, there will be conflicting interests, sentiments, creeds, principles, which will from time to time lead to war. We may settle many disputes peacefully by mutual conces sion, or by voluntary submission to external arbitration: but an appeal to arms always lies behind, and is the only re source when differences go too deep for reconciliation, or when the self-respect of nations is too severely wounded. Even within a nation there are many possibilities, remote perhaps yet never unimaginable, which may bring about civil war. And though it is perfectly conceivable that a given war may be waged to the end without a single im portant battle, if the superior skill of one side enables it to gain overwhelming advantage without fighting, yet practically this does not happen. Battles are in fact the decisive events in the contests which are of sufficient moment to grow into war. It is very easy to exaggerate their importance, to fix attention on the climax only, and lose sight of the events which led up to it, and which went very far in most cases towards determining its result. But after all the battle is the climax, and the world in general may be forgiven for over-estimating it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Battle Studies by Ardant Du Picq Pdf

Excerpt from Battle Studies: Ancient and Modern Battle On the professional side the service is obvious, since before the last war the weakness of the American like the British Army, a weakness inevitable, given our iso lation, lay in the absence of adequate study of the higher branches of military science and thus the ah sence of such a body of highly skilled professional soldiers, as constituted the French or German General Staff. The present volume is a. Clear evidence that American officers themselves have voluntarily under taken to make good this lack. On the non-professional side and for the general reader, the service is hardly less considerable, since it supplies the least technically informed with a simply comprehensible explanation of things which almost every one has struggled to grasp and visualize during the last six years extending from the battle of Marne in 1914 to that of the Vistula in 1920. A True Account of the Battle of Jutland (Classic Reprint) by Thomas G. Frothingham Pdf

Excerpt from A True Account of the Battle of Jutland The following is an account of the essential facts of the Battle of Jutland, amplified from the review in the author's book, A Guide to the Military History of The World War, 1914-1918, published this year by Little, Brown & Co. This gives a greatly needed description of the events of the naval action, with the forces of both sides placed in true relation, one to the other. No previously published account had contained an adequate treatment of the man uvres of both fleets, as certain important events of the action were not understood, and it had been assumed that situations existed for which there was no foundation in fact. All this has resulted in a mass of confused and erroneous narratives - and the Battle of Jutland has become one of the most misunderstood actions in history. The British Admiralty has announced that an official record of the Battle of Jutland would not be given out. Instead of this, the official dispatches covering the action have been issued in the form of a Blue-book. The Battles of the Somme (Classic Reprint) by Philip Gibbs Pdf

Excerpt from The Battles of the Somme IN this book I have put together the articles which I have written day by day for more than three months, Since that first day of July 1916 when hundreds of thousands of British troops rose out of the ditches held against the enemy for nearly two years of trench warfare, advanced over open country upon the most formidable system of defences ever organized by great armies, and began a series of battles as fierce and bloody as anything the Old earth has seen on such a stretch of ground since the beginning of human strife. Excerpt from The Battles of Trenton and Princeton Trenton, One Hundred Years Ago, which gave a brief description of the citizens and their homes in the village as it appeared in 1776 and 1777. As I continued to study the past of this historic town, and found myself surrounded in official life by the manuscript records of those brave soldiers who fought for liberty in the hour that tried men's souls, I compiled all the authentic military rolls which I could obtain, and published my Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War.
