Oman by Marc Valeri Pdf

When Sultan Qaboos overthrew his father as ruler of the Persian Gulf state of Oman in 1970, with the help of British advisers, few expected him to survive long. He was unknown to his own population, and the country was poor and plagued by civil wars. Yet he has built his regime's legitimacy on a policy of national unification, the assimilation of all of Oman to the oil rentier state framework, and of his state to the person of the sultan, the incarnation of the country's 'renaissance'. This books seeks to understand the mechanisms of social and political perpetuation of authoritarianism in post-colonial states such as Oman. It shows how one monarchical power has built and constantly renewed its basis to meet the internal and external challenges threatening its stability. Yet this book also raises the question of what happens when one part of this model, namely an oil-rent economy, falters, with half the population under fifteen years of age and when the privileges enjoyed till recently may no longer be tenable. Valeri also sheds light on the strategies adopted and challenges faced by other Arab monarchies in the Persian Gulf, Morocco and Jordan.

Oman by John Beasant Pdf

Oman is one of the world’s most secretive countries, ruled with absolute authority by the Sultan. All information is strictly controlled by the State: British Prime Minister Edward Heath once said that the story of the 1970 Palace Coup and the events that followed would ‘not be told in our lifetime’. Following ten years’ residency in the country a senior member of Sultan Qaboos's Family suggested that John Beasant write a political history of Oman that would to some extent rehabilitate the maligned name of former Sultan Said, who was deposed in the 1970 Coup. In 'Oman' Beasant catalogues a nature of exploitation woven through all manner of political and commercial interests and casts light on the dark practices so often involved in the sale of arms to Middle Eastern states and illustrates the political use to which the sale of ‘black gold’ - oil - can be put. Oman is a parable of our times, detailing rivalry and intrigue between people in high places. It is one of the most dramatic tales in Arab history: a chronicle of personal price, rapacious greed and undiluted lust for power.

Review:I am highly obliged to be a part of this book by writing a review to the latest book of Emmanuel Bathula, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said The King of Peace 50 years of the glorious reign, a book that marks the magnificent era and his legacy that is continued by his successor, the humblest and kindest king of Oman, HM Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq. I take this opportunity to appreciate the writer and all the others members for their dedication of the book to the entire Omani community on the auspicious occasion of 50th National Day which is also the 80th birth anniversary of the late king, his majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said celebrated solemnly under the successful coronation of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq after the death of the noblest and the king of peace, HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said.I am surprised to see a foreigner writing a book about our homeland, Oman, and about our beloved king with utmost love and concern for the nation. The present title, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said The King of Peace 50 years of the glorious reign, is partially an anthology of write-ups from different nationalities and the extracts from the internet along with the writer's own sources of information and experience in the country. After reading this book I feel that the book would touch our entire Omani community for the respect and love of expatriates for our motherland. Indeed, this book would inspire the entire world to know about the noblest king of peace His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said through the genuine feelings of the writer and his team.It is a book of a rare combination of the writer's understanding of the place where he lives and the experience he has got with the people of Oman. 50 Years of Glorious Reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, provides every reader the story which is a glorious history from the land of Oman. According to the author, in the recent past, there has never been a king who ruled his kingdom for 50 years with fair treatment of humility, respect, equality, and fraternity to everyone under his protection as the king of Oman, Sultan Qaboos bin Said. To quote from one of his rarest speeches, "The world you are inheriting is one in which fanaticism, intolerance, and disregard and disrespect for the rule of law have become a byword, where we see violence and oppression on all sides, and we see man sometimes in despair of the future of humanity. But we believe that the day must come when these evils are defeated. This is the aim which every one of us, of every nationality, must seek to work for and achieve."The book covers from the author's point of view from the birth of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said until his death on 10th January 2020 along with the extracts he has taken from other sources. The writer tries to convey how the king took all the challenges onto his young shoulders at the age of thirty without any turning back and led the nation to the pinnacle of success where no other country in the world could do such wonders as His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said did. He is the rarest of kings of peace in the history of humanity. Further, the book also highlights the expatriates' understanding of Omani people and their relationships with other nationalities. In their words, Omani people are very kind and generous.- Najma Al ZadjaliDescription:In short, the book is a partial compilation of the author and the write-ups by different nationalities along with the direct extracts taken from original sources. This is a humble tribute from everyone who took part and gave one's share through their write-ups in this book honoring the late king his Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said along with a commitment to continue humble services to the country under the esteemed leadership of the present king, HM Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.

A Sultanate that Endures by Joseph A. Kéchichian Pdf

Qaboos bin Sa'id, Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020, marked Omani history. He belonged to that very small circle of leaders who solemnized their time in power, transforming the Sultanate by empowering generations of citizens to lead constructive and fulfilling lives. Joseph Kéchichian provides a full assessment of the fourteenth Al Sa'id dynasty sovereign, setting out his vision for what was then a relatively isolated nation, championing the necessity for alliances, investing in people as well as the land, and founding key institutions that evolved over five decades. These achievements took time to materialize as Qaboos preserved Al Sa'id rule, governed wisely, avoided internal and external political entanglements, and passed the torch to his successor Haitham bin Tariq, who validated Al Sa'id authority upon becoming Sultan. A Sultanate that Endures is a companion volume to Oman and the World: The Emergence of an Independent Foreign Policy (RAND, 1995). It highlights Omani history, with a particular focus on the religious creed Ibadhiyyah that embraces tolerance and prevents injustice. The transition from a theocracy to a monarchy that established dynastic rule is discussed in the context of the Sultanate's millennial history, affirming its rulers' legitimacy and citizen acceptance. The author evaluates how Ibadhiyyah and its traditions formed the gist of the Sultanate's foreign policies, concentrating on ties with predominantly Muslim-inhabited countries, engagement with the African Continent, its links with the Arab Gulf region, and appraising Omani diplomacy with key Asian and Western countries. The study closes with a preliminary analysis of the transition to Sultan Haitham, evaluates his primary appointments, and reviews his declared priorities for the nation. Future domestic and foreign policy challenges that may confront Omanis concludes the volume.

Dawn Over Oman by Pauline Searle Pdf

Oman is one of the most beautiful and popular countries in the Middle East, yet a few years ago it was one of the world’s backwaters where visitors were discouraged. The turning point came with the takeover of power by Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1970. This book, first published in 1979, takes the reader around the country, from the rugged Musandam peninsula in the north to the southern province of Dhofar. It builds a bridge between historical and modern Oman, describes the people and their landscapes, and the country’s indigenous arts and crafts.

Oman Reborn by Linda Pappas Funsch Pdf

The Sultanate of Oman is one of the few "good news" stories to have emerged from the Middle East in recent memory. This book traces the narrative of a little-known and relatively stable Arab country whose history of independence, legacy of interaction with diverse cultures, and enlightened modern leadership have transformed it in less than fifty years from an isolated medieval-style potentate to a stable, dynamic, and largely optimistic country. At the heart of this fascinating story is Oman’s sultan, Qaboos bin Sa’id, friend to both East and West, whose unique leadership style has resulted in both domestic and foreign policy achievements during more than four decades in office. Exploring Oman from a historical perspective, Funsch examines how the country’s unique blend of tradition and modernization has enabled it to succeed while others in the region have failed. Accounts of the author’s own experiences with Oman’s transformation add rich layers of depth, texture, and personality to the narrative.
