On Early English Pronunciation by Richard Francis Weymouth Pdf

Excerpt from On Early English Pronunciation: With Especial Reference to Chaucer Besides, the former mode of putting the question has a tendency towards the assumption that each symbol, or group of symbols, stood only for one sound, or at most for one pair of sounds, one long and one short. Considering that our first vowel is at present the representative of at least four distinct sounds (as in fate, fat, fat/zer, fall), and our second vowel of at least three (as in we, w/zen, were); we must not assume that it was entirely otherwise five or ten centuries ago. Mr. Ellis leans on the broken reed of the maxim that The Orthography shows the sound How untrustworthy the support is - though unhappily we some times have no other - will be abundantly proved further on. But besides trusting far too implicitly to this delusive maxim, Mr. Ellis in conducting his case exhibits singular partiality towards one class of witnesses, while others - by far the most important - he treats with undeserved dis respect: they are not indeed put out of court, but they are by no means allowed full, a patient, and impartial hearing. A History of English Sounds, from the Earliest Period, Including an Investigation of the General Laws of Sound Change, and Full Word Lists (Classic Reprint) by Henry Sweet Pdf

Excerpt from A History of English Sounds, From the Earliest Period, Including an Investigation of the General Laws of Sound Change, and Full Word Lists The History of English Sounds, by Mr. Henry Sweet, was originally written for the London Philological Society, in further illustration of the great work on Early English Pronunciation by Mr. Alexander J. Ellis. Upon application to the Council of the Philological Society, and to the author, permission was at once obtained for making arrangements whereby additional copies of the work should be struck off for the use of members of the English Dialect Society. The importance of it to all who study English sounds, especially such sounds as are frequently well preserved in some of our provincial dialects, will soon become apparent to the careful reader. But as there may be some amongst our members who may not be aware of what has been lately achieved in the study of phonetics, a few words of introduction may not be out of place here. I have more than once received letters from correspondents who boldly assert that, of some of our dialectal sounds, no representation is possible, and that it is useless to attempt it. Against such a sweeping denunciation of the study of phonetics it would be vain to argue. It may be sufficient merely to remark that precisely the same argument of "impossibility" was used, not so many years ago, against the introduction of the use of steam locomotives upon railways. Excerpt from On Early English Pronunciation, With Especial Reference to Shakspere and Chaucer: Containing an Investigation of the Correspondence of Writing With Speech in England, From the Anglosaxon Period to the Present Day, Preceded by a Systematic Notation of All Spoken Sounds by Means of the Ordinary Printing Types These mss. May be looked upon as' authorities for the words, but not for the southern pronunciation of the words, and they shew their writers' own pronunciation by using letters in precisely the same sense as was assigned from the Harl. Ms. On p. 398 above. Two points may be particularly noticed because they are both points of difference between Mr. Payne and myself, (supra pp. 582, 583) and in one of them I seem to differ from many of those who have formed an opinion on the subject.
