This work shows that $K$-theoretic data is a complete invariant for certain inductive limit $C^*$-algebras. $C^*$-algebras of this kind are useful in studying group actions. A classification is given of certain separable nuclear C*-algebras not necessarily of real rank zero, namely, the class of simple C*-algebras which are inductive limits of continuous-trace C*-algebras whose building blocks have spectrum homeomorphic to the closed interval [0, 1] or to a finite disjoint union of closed intervals. In particular, a classification of those stably AI algebras which are inductive limits of hereditary sub-C*-algebras of interval algebras is obtained. Also, the range of the invariant is calculated.

The authors introduce the concept of finitely coloured equivalence for unital -homomorphisms between -algebras, for which unitary equivalence is the -coloured case. They use this notion to classify -homomorphisms from separable, unital, nuclear -algebras into ultrapowers of simple, unital, nuclear, -stable -algebras with compact extremal trace space up to -coloured equivalence by their behaviour on traces; this is based on a -coloured classification theorem for certain order zero maps, also in terms of tracial data. As an application the authors calculate the nuclear dimension of non-AF, simple, separable, unital, nuclear, -stable -algebras with compact extremal trace space: it is 1. In the case that the extremal trace space also has finite topological covering dimension, this confirms the remaining open implication of the Toms-Winter conjecture. Inspired by homotopy-rigidity theorems in geometry and topology, the authors derive a “homotopy equivalence implies isomorphism” result for large classes of -algebras with finite nuclear dimension.

Lin studies E(X,A) , the quotient of Ext[s]eu(C(X),A) by a special class of trivial extension, dubbed totally trivial extensions. This leads to a BDF-type classification for extensions of C(X) by a *s-unital purely infinite simple C] *-algebra with trivial K[1-group. Lin also shows that, when X is a compact subset of the plane, every extension of C(X) by a finite matroid C]*-algebra is totally trivial. Classification of these extensions for nice spaces is given, as are some other versions of the Weyl-von Neumann-Berg theorem.

This book is based on the notes of the authors' seminar on algebraic and Lie groups held at the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow University in 1967/68. Our guiding idea was to present in the most economic way the theory of semisimple Lie groups on the basis of the theory of algebraic groups. Our main sources were A. Borel's paper [34], C. A distinctive feature of this book is that almost all the material is presented as a sequence of problems, as it had been in the first draft of the seminar's notes. We believe that solving these problems may help the reader to feel the seminar's atmosphere and master the theory. Nevertheless, all the non-trivial ideas, and sometimes solutions, are contained in hints given at the end of each section. The proofs of certain theorems, which we consider more difficult, are given directly in the main text.
