On Tokyo's Edge by Gordon Ball Pdf

Fiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. Edited by Susan Gardner. These twenty-three short stories reaffirm author Gordon Ball's absorption with, and illumination of, "vanished" people, places, and times. Following on the heels of three memoirs, ON TOKYO'S EDGE re-creates the texture of life among a rarefied group of relatively isolated foreigners in American-Occupied Japan and the decade following Occupation. Peopling these interrelated short fictions are a great range of vivid characters, including schoolmates, lovers, military men, chemistry teachers, maids, a lustful preacher, and a missionary of exemplary character. Many of the tales focus on young Robert La Salle, suddenly transplanted at age five to a culture 8,000 miles distant and who, as year follows year, confronts levels of "foreignness" within himself and his family as well as the strange larger world around him. "ON TOKYO'S EDGE is a wonderful collection of stories about a young boy coming of age in a foreign land. The stories draw us into his world and let us learn with him what happens when two cultures collide. Ball's gentle, patient nature and his affection for this vanished world shines through vivid and undimmed by time. Beautifully written, it's a book I couldn't put down." -- Bill Morgan "ON TOKYO'S EDGE gorgeously evokes the privileged world of American expats in 1950's Occupied Japan. Among them is Robert La Salle, a young boy, uncomfortably aware of being an outsider in a defeated country and keenly alert to adult foibles. In crisp, ringing detail, the story reveals a tightly-knit American community that is reshaping Japan even as Japan refashions its place in the world. Like the re-emerging nation, Robert is coming of age. His progress is poignant, funny, and vastly entertaining." -- Cary Holladay "Gordon Ball has proven himself to be a first-rate memoirist, whether he's recalling his role as an observer/participant in the mid-Sixties New York alternative film community (66 Frames) or remembering his job at controlling the mayhem of Allen Ginsberg's upstate New York farm (East Hill Farm). In this collection of short stories, he has taken the shards of his memory as a youth growing up in Japan, shaped then with the tools of fiction, and crafted them into wonderful tales and anecdotes. He has accomplished what good fiction sets out to do." -- Michael Schumacher

Tundra Disturbances and Recovery Following the 1949 Exploratory Drilling, Fish Creek, Northern Alaska by Daniel E. Lawson Pdf

A 1949 drill site in the Naval Petroleum Reserve Number 4, Alaska, the Fish Creek Test Well 1, was examined in August 1977 to determine the disturbance caused by drilling activities and to analyze the response and recover of the vegetation, soils, permafrost, and surficial materials to that distrubance. The site, abandoned in 1949, is located along Camp Creek, a tributary to Fish Creek located 28 km. south of Atigaru Point and west of Nuiqsut.

Electron-Molecule Collisions by Isao Shimamura,Kazuo Takayanagi Pdf

Scattering phenomena play an important role in modern physics. Many significant discoveries have been made through collision experiments. Amongst diverse kinds of collision systems, this book sheds light on the collision of an electron with a molecule. The electron-molecule collision provides a basic scattering problem. It is scattering by a nonspherical, multicentered composite particle with its centers having degrees of freedom of motion. The molecule can even disintegrate, Le., dissociate or ionize into fragments, some or all of which may also be molecules. Although it is a difficult problem, the recent theoretical, experimental, and computational progress has been so significant as to warrant publication of a book that specializes in this field. The progress owes partly to technical develop ments in measurements and computations. No less important has been the great and continuing stimulus from such fields of application as astrophysics, the physics of the earth's upper atmosphere, laser physics, radiation physics, the physics of gas discharges, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, and so on. This book aims at introducing the reader to the problem of electron molecule collisions, elucidating the physics behind the phenomena, and review ing, to some extent, up-to-date important results. This book should be appropri ate for graduate reading in physics and chemistry. We also believe that investi gators in atomic and molecular physics will benefit much from this book.

TOKYO VERTIGO by Stephen Barber Pdf

In TOKYO VERTIGO, Stephen Barber explores the most mesmerising and precarious of all contemporary world cities: Tokyo: the megalopolis, in extremis. Barber probes the multiple ways in which Tokyo projects and hides itself, focusing upon its filmic, photographic and media cultures as well as its extraordinary urban history of destruction, unrest and reconfiguration. Dividing his analysis into three parts, the author first interrogates the disparate urban ‘zones’ of Tokyo, from the image-screen constellated districts of Shinjuku and Shibuya to the desolate peripheries where the megalopolis falls apart, then examines Tokyo’s sexual and media cultures, through which the city’s compulsive fascinations and obsessions exert their power. Finally, the book looks at the ways in which European culture collides with Tokyo’s urban formations, often generating unprecedented, hybrid images and texts.

Japan at Nature's Edge by Ian Jared Miller,Julia Adeney Thomas,Brett L. Walker Pdf

Japan at Nature’s Edge is a timely collection of essays that explores the relationship between Japan’s history, culture, and physical environment. It greatly expands the focus of previous work on Japanese modernization by examining Japan’s role in global environmental transformation and how Japanese ideas have shaped bodies and landscapes over the centuries. The immediacy of Earth’s environmental crisis, a predicament highlighted by Japan’s March 2011 disaster, brings a sense of urgency to the study of Japan and its global connections. The work is an environmental history in the broadest sense of the term because it contains writing by environmental anthropologists, a legendary Japanese economist, and scholars of Japanese literature and culture. The editors have brought together an unparalleled assemblage of some of the finest scholars in the field who, rather than treat it in isolation or as a unique cultural community, seek to connect Japan to global environmental currents such as whaling, world fisheries, mountaineering and science, mining and industrial pollution, and relations with nonhuman animals. The contributors assert the importance of the environment in understanding Japan’s history and propose a new balance between nature and culture, one weighted much more heavily on the side of natural legacies. This approach does not discount culture. Instead, it suggests that the Japanese experience of nature, like that of all human beings, is a complex and intimate negotiation between the physical and cultural worlds. Contributors: Daniel P. Aldrich, Jakobina Arch, Andrew Bernstein, Philip C. Brown, Timothy S. George, Jeffrey E. Hanes, David L. Howell, Federico Marcon, Christine L. Quantum Computing in Solid State Systems by Berardo Ruggiero,Per Delsing,Carmine Granata,Yuri A. Pashkin,P. Silvestrini Pdf

Quantum Computation in Solid State Systems discusses experimental implementation of quantum computing for information processing devices; in particular observations of quantum behavior in several solid state systems are presented. The complementary theoretical contributions provide models of minimizing decoherence in the different systems. Most recent theoretical and experimental results on macroscopic quantum coherence of mesoscopic systems, as well as the realization of solid-state qubits and quantum gates are discussed. Particular attention is given to coherence effects in Josephson devices. Other solid state systems---including quantum dots, optical, ion, and spin devices---are also discussed.
