Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment by Committee on Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment,Institute of Medicine Pdf

For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Pdf

The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Methadone Maintenance Treatment by Pearl Isaac,Beth Sproule Pdf

The problem of opioid addiction is growing in Ontario, primarily associated with the use of pharmaceutical products rather than heroin. For many Ontarians struggling with opioid dependence, methadone maintenance is an effective treatment that could save their lives. However, methadone has a unique pharmacological profile that requires specialized knowledge and procedures to ensure its safe use. Pharmacists are at the front line of ensuring clients' safe and effective use of methadone. This guide complements CAMH's comprehensive best-practice manual for pharmacists, Methadone Maintenance: A Pharmacist's Guide to Treatment, a required resource for all pharmacies dispensing methadone in Ontario. This new book addresses issues beyond best practice by the individual pharmacist, making a series of recommendations related to interprofessional collaboration, the pharmacy environment, education programs, accessibility of services and research needs. As the most accessible member of the treatment team, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to make a difference in the care of MMT clients. This book envisions ways in which professional organizations, educators, policy makers and researchers, among others, may support individual pharmacists working in a variety of practice settings in enhancing the care they provide through MMT pharmacy services.

The Effectiveness of Methadone Maintenance Treatment by John C. Ball,Alan Ross Pdf

Legislators, journalists and concerned citizens in general, when consider ing what to do about the plague of heroin addiction in large cities, ask an obvious question: "Is methadone treatment effective?" This question is a critical one since maintenance with methadone is at present the only prac tical alternative to leaving tens of thousands (in New York City, hundreds of thousands) of untreated addicts on the streets. Other treatments, although effective for limited groups, could not conceivably be expanded to stop heroin use in as much as 10% of the addicted population. The present study, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, was undertaken to provide an authoritative answer to this question. Under the direction of a distinguished expert, the evaluation team made an inten sive examination of techniques and outcomes in six different methadone programs located in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and followed this by two yhears of data analysis and literature review. The present re port is the product of this work. The primary conclusion-namely that methadone treatment is substan tially effective in reducing heroin use and associated criminal behavior-is consistent with the findings of several previous independent evaluations.

Methadone Maintenance Treatment and Other Opioid Replacement Therapies by Jeff Ward,Richard P. Mattick,Wayne Hall Pdf

The 1980s and 1990s have witnessed a worldwide epidemic of heroin addiction, and countries around the world have moved to put in place opiate replacement therapy programs to deal with this problem. While most of these programs use methadone as a substitute drug of choice, most recently, buprenorphine, LAAM (levo acetyl methadol), and heroin have been employed for this purpose. A comprehensive guide to the use of drug substitution in the treatment of opiate dependence, this handbook provides an up-to-date account of treatment research and practice in this growing area. As well as answering questions about the status of this class of interventions in terms of their demonstrated effectiveness, it also includes detailed discussions of assessment issues, appropriate dosage regimes, the role of ancillary social and psychosocial services, the use of opiate replacement therapy in prisons, optimal treatment during pregnancy, and the cost-effectiveness of this form of treatment.
