Web Caching by Duane Wessels Pdf

On the World Wide Web, speed and efficiency are vital. Users have little patience for slow web pages, while network administrators want to make the most of their available bandwidth. A properly designed web cache reduces network traffic and improves access times to popular web sites--a boon to network administrators and web users alike.Web Caching hands you all the technical information you need to design, deploy, and operate an effective web caching service. It starts with the basics of how web caching works, from the HTTP headers that govern cachability to cache validation and replacement algorithms.Topics covered in this book include: Designing an effective cache solution Configuring web browsers to use a cache Setting up a collection of caches that can talk to each other Configuring an interception cache or proxy Monitoring and fine-tuning the performance of a cache Configuring web servers to cooperate with web caches Benchmarking cache products The book also covers the important political aspects of web caching, including privacy, intellectual property, and security issues.Internet service providers, large corporations, or educational institutions--in short, any network that provides connectivity to a wide variety of users--can reap enormous benefit from running a well-tuned web caching service. Web Caching shows you how to do it right.

Web Caching and Replication by Michael Rabinovich,Oliver Spatscheck Pdf

In Web Caching and Replication, two AT&T Labs experts bring together real-world implementations, the latest IETF and W3C technical standards, and the field's most advanced research, offering systematic guidance for maximizing Web scalability and performance. The authors first introduce key concepts of Web caching and replication. They introduce HTTP's support for caching and replication, and broadly characterize Web behavior, offering practical rules of thumb for optimizing performance. Next, they focus on caching, helping implementers realistically assess proxy caching, deploy proxies in corporate and ISP networks; and utilize cooperative proxy caching. They offer in-depth insights into cache consistency, and caching the "uncacheable" -- including "cookied" and dynamic content. Part III introduces today's best techniques for web replication, offering in-depth coverage of content delivery networks, server selection, content placement, and more. For all networking professionals, IT professionals, and engineers involved with building or optimizing Internet services or equipment; for content delivery specialists and service providers; and for owners of large sites concerned about scalability and performance.

Performance Optimization: Techniques And Strategies by Smashing Magazine Pdf

Slow loading times break the user experience of any website — no matter how well crafted it might be. In fact, it only takes three seconds until users lose their interest in a site if they don't get a response immediately. If another site happens to be 250ms faster than yours, then users are more inclined to switch to a competitor’s website in no time. Web fonts, heavy JavaScript, third-party widgets — all of them can sum up to become a real performance bottleneck. Nevertheless, tracking that down does not only improve loading times but also results in a much snappier experience and a higher user engagement. In this eBook, we’ve compiled an entire selection of front-end and server-side techniques that will help you tackle such bottlenecks. Find out how to speed up existing websites, build high-performance sites (for both mobile and desktop), and prepare them for heavy-load situations. Furthermore, you’ll learn more about how performance improvements and a 97–99 Google PageSpeed score were achieved on Smashing Magazine, as well as how optimization strategies can enhance real-life projects by taking a closer look at Pinterest’s paint performance case study. With the help of this eBook, you’ll notice that it’s high time to dig deeper into your own site and examine it closely. Why don’t you polish it up and make it even better than it already is! TABLE OF CONTENTS: - Improving Smashing Magazine’s Performance: A Case Study - How To Speed Up Your WordPress Website - You May Be Losing Users If Responsive Web Design Is Your Only Mobile Strategy - How To Make Your Websites Faster On Mobile Devices - Creating High-Performance Mobile Websites - Don’t Get Crushed By The Load: Optimization Techniques And Strategies - Speed Up Your Mobile Website With Varnish - Cache Invalidation Strategies With Varnish Cache - Gone In 60 Frames Per Second: A Pinterest Paint Performance Case Study

Caching and Materialization for Web Databases by Alexandros Labrinidis,Qiong Luo,Jie Xu Pdf

Database systems have been driving dynamic web sites since the early 90s; nowadays, even seemingly static web sites employ a database back-end for personalization and advertising purposes. In order to keep up with the high demand fuelled by the rapid growth of the Internet, a number of caching and materialization techniques have been proposed for web databases over the years. The main goal of these techniques is to improve performance, scalability, and manageability of database-driven dynamic web sites, in a way that the quality of data is not compromised. Although caching and materialization are well understood concepts in the traditional database and networking/operating systems literature, the Web and web databases bring forth unique characteristics that warrant new techniques and approaches. In this survey, we adopt a data management point of view to describe the system architectures of web databases, and analyze the research issues related to caching and materialization in such architectures. We also present the state of the art in caching and materialization for web databases and organize current approaches according to the fundamental questions, namely how to store, how to use, and how to maintain cached/materialized web data. Finally, we associate work in caching and materialization for web databases to similar techniques in other related areas, such as data warehousing, distributed systems, and distributed databases.
