Countable Boolean Algebras and Decidability by Sergey Goncharov Pdf

This book describes the latest Russian research covering the structure and algorithmic properties of Boolean algebras from the algebraic and model-theoretic points of view. A significantly revised version of the author's Countable Boolean Algebras (Nauka, Novosibirsk, 1989), the text presents new results as well as a selection of open questions on Boolean algebras. Other current features include discussions of the Kottonen algebras in enrichments by ideals and automorphisms, and the properties of the automorphism groups.

Selected Papers on Algebra and Topology by Garrett Birkhoff by J.S. Oliveira,G.-C. Rota Pdf

The present volume of reprints are what I consider to be my most interesting and influential papers on algebra and topology. To tie them together, and to place them in context, I have supplemented them by a series of brief essays sketching their historieal background (as I see it). In addition to these I have listed some subsequent papers by others which have further developed some of my key ideas. The papers on universal algebra, lattice theory, and general topology collected in the present volume concern ideas which have become familiar to all working mathematicians. It may be helpful to make them readily accessible in one volume. I have tried in the introduction to each part to state the most significant features of ea ch paper reprinted there, and to indieate later developments. The background that shaped and stimulated my early work on universal algebra, lattice theory, and topology may be of some interest. As a Harvard undergraduate in 1928-32, I was encouraged to do independent reading and to write an original thesis. My tutorial reading included de la Vallee-Poussin's beautiful Cours d'Analyse Infinitesimale, Hausdorff's Grundzüge der Mengenlehre, and Frechet's Espaces Abstraits. In addition, I discovered Caratheodory's 1912 paper "Vber das lineare Mass von Punktmengen" and Hausdorff's 1919 paper on "Dimension und Ausseres Mass," and derived much inspiration from them. A fragment of my thesis, analyzing axiom systems for separable metrizable spaces, was later published [2]. * This background led to the work summarized in Part IV.

Boolean Constructions in Universal Algebras by A.G. Pinus Pdf

During the last few decades the ideas, methods, and results of the theory of Boolean algebras have played an increasing role in various branches of mathematics and cybernetics. This monograph is devoted to the fundamentals of the theory of Boolean constructions in universal algebra. Also considered are the problems of presenting different varieties of universal algebra with these constructions, and applications for investigating the spectra and skeletons of varieties of universal algebras. For researchers whose work involves universal algebra and logic.

Combinatorial Set Theory of C*-algebras by Ilijas Farah Pdf

This book explores and highlights the fertile interaction between logic and operator algebras, which in recent years has led to the resolution of several long-standing open problems on C*-algebras. The interplay between logic and operator algebras (C*-algebras, in particular) is relatively young and the author is at the forefront of this interaction. The deep level of scholarship contained in these pages is evident and opens doors to operator algebraists interested in learning about the set-theoretic methods relevant to their field, as well as to set-theorists interested in expanding their view to the non-commutative realm of operator algebras. Enough background is included from both subjects to make the book a convenient, self-contained source for students. A fair number of the exercises form an integral part of the text. They are chosen to widen and deepen the material from the corresponding chapters. Some other exercises serve as a warmup for the latter chapters.

Probability Algebras and Stochastic Spaces by Demetrios A. Kappos Pdf

Probability Algebras and Stochastic Spaces explores the fundamental notions of probability theory in the so-called “point-free way. The space of all elementary random variables defined over a probability algebra in a “point-free way is a base for the stochastic space of all random variables, which can be obtained from it by lattice-theoretic extension processes. This book is composed of eight chapters and begins with discussions of the definition, properties, scope, and extension of probability algebras. The succeeding chapters deal with the Cartesian product of probability algebras and the principles of stochastic spaces. These topics are followed by surveys of the expectation, moments, and spaces of random variables. The final chapters define generalized random variables and the Boolean homomorphisms of these variables. This book will be of great value to mathematicians and advance mathematics students.

Residuated Structures in Algebra and Logic by George Metcalfe,Francesco Paoli,Constantine Tsinakis Pdf

This book is an introduction to residuated structures, viewed as a common thread binding together algebra and logic. The framework includes well-studied structures from classical abstract algebra such as lattice-ordered groups and ideals of rings, as well as structures serving as algebraic semantics for substructural and other non-classical logics. Crucially, classes of these structures are studied both algebraically, yielding a rich structure theory along the lines of Conrad's program for lattice-ordered groups, and algorithmically, via analytic sequent or hypersequent calculi. These perspectives are related using a natural notion of equivalence for consequence relations that provides a bridge offering benefits to both sides. Algorithmic methods are used to establish properties like decidability, amalgamation, and generation by subclasses, while new insights into logical systems are obtained by studying associated classes of structures. The book is designed to serve the purposes of novices and experts alike. The first three chapters provide a gentle introduction to the subject, while subsequent chapters provide a state-of-the-art account of recent developments in the field.

Lectures on Soft Computing and Fuzzy Logic by Antonio Di Nola,Giangiacomo Gerla Pdf

The present volume collects selected papers arising from lectures delivered by the authors at the School on Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing held during the years 1996/97/98/99 and sponsored by the Salerno University. The authors contributing to this volume agreed with editors to write down, to enlarge and, in many cases, to rethink their original lectures, in order to offer to readership, a more compact presentation of the proposed topics. The aim of the volume is to offer a picture, as a job in progress, of the effort that is coming in founding and developing soft computing's techniques. The volume contains papers aimed to report on recent results containing genuinely logical aspects of fuzzy logic. The topics treated in this area cover algebraic aspects of Lukasiewicz Logic, Fuzzy Logic as the logic of continuous t-norms, Intuitionistic Fuzzy Logic. Aspects of fuzzy logic based on similar ity relation are presented in connection with the problem of flexible querying in deductive database. Departing from fuzzy logic, some papers present re sults in Probability Logic treating computational aspects, results based on indishernability relation and a non commutative version of generalized effect algebras. Several strict applications of soft computing are presented in the book. Indeed we find applications ranging among pattern recognition, image and signal processing, evolutionary agents, fuzzy cellular networks, classi fication in fuzzy environments. The volume is then intended to serve as a reference work for foundational logico-algebraic aspect of Soft Computing and for concrete applications of soft computing technologies.

C*-Algebras and Their Automorphism Groups by Søren Eilers,Dorte Olesen Pdf

This elegantly edited landmark edition of Gert Kjærgård Pedersen’s C*-Algebras and their Automorphism Groups (1979) carefully and sensitively extends the classic work to reflect the wealth of relevant novel results revealed over the past forty years. Revered from publication for its writing clarity and extremely elegant presentation of a vast space within operator algebras, Pedersen’s monograph is notable for reviewing partially ordered vector spaces and group automorphisms in unusual detail, and by strict intention releasing the C*-algebras from the yoke of representations as Hilbert space operators. Under the editorship of Søren Eilers and Dorte Olesen, the second edition modernizes Pedersen’s work for a new generation of C*-algebraists, with voluminous new commentary, all-new indexes, annotation and terminology annexes, and a surfeit of new discussion of applications and of the author’s later work. Covers basic C*-algebra theory in a short and appealingly elegant way, with a few additions and corrections given to the editors by the original author. Expands coverage to select contemporary accomplishments in C*-algebras of direct relevance to the scope of the first edition, including aspects of K-theory and set theory. Identifies key modern literature in an updated bibliography with over 100 new entries, and greatly enhances indexing throughout. Modernizes coverage of algebraic problems in relation to the theory of unitary representations of locally compact groups. Reviews mathematical accomplishments of Gert K. Pedersen in comments and a biography.
