Orson Hyde by Myrtle Stevens Hyde Pdf

Orson Hyde was chosen as an original member of the Council of the Twelve in 1835, when the Mormon Church first organized this governing body. Orson's most well-known accomplishment was as a Mormon missionary to Jerusalem (1840-1842) to dedicate the land for the return of the Jews. Civil authorities in Jerusalem invited the development of a five-acre hillside garden, in honor of Orson Hyde, which was completed in 1979.Participating in the Mormon drama of crossing the plains in the U.S. several times and settling the West, Orson was a colonizing leader in western Iowa, also in what became western Nevada, and in central Utah. He was a major figure in Utah's Black Hawk Indian War (1865-1872).Using facts, details and personal experiences never before in print, Myrtle Hyde, the Hyde family genealogist, has used diaries, letters, notes, documents, reports, articles, speeches and letters to present a real-life depiction of Orson Hyde, apostle, teacher, missionary, orator, scriptorian, journalist, editor, lawyer, judge, statesman, colonizer, and administrator; also the husband of eight wives, the father of thirty-three children. Contains an extensive Index and Bibliography.

Devils Will Reign by Sally Zanjani Pdf

Nevada entered the Union in 1864 as the thirty-sixth state, a mere two decades after John Charles Frémont and his party undertook the first Euro-American exploration of the Great Basin. However, the intervening years were exceptionally eventful—gold was discovered in California in 1848; the debate over slavery in the territories made the Far West a significant topic of congressional concern; and the Mormon establishment in Utah stimulated national suspicion of the sect’s ambitions and policies—giving this remote, sparsely populated region on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada an importance that it probably would not have had in less turbulent times. In 1849, more than 22,000 people traveled the emigrant trails across the Great Basin, and soon Mormons from Utah set up a trading station in the Carson Valley to reap profit from the emigrant trade and anchor the western periphery of what their leader, Brigham Young, envisioned as a Mormon inland empire. Miners in Gold Canyon (just south of what is now Virginia City) and settlers in the Carson Valley were pushing the Native Americans out of their ancient homelands and vying with one another for control of choice land and rudimentary local governments. In Devils Will Reign, acclaimed historian Sally Zanjani recounts the momentous early history of the territory that is now known as Nevada, weaving the colorful saga of this rowdy frontier into the larger story of national political crises and economic ambitions, rapid development in California, and religious antipathy toward the polygamous Mormons. Here are intrepid frontiersmen, beleaguered Native Americans, zealous Mormons, and colorful characters and farmers, including a group of African Americans who successfully settled in the Carson Valley. Zanjani covers the lives of the pioneers, as well as the development and impact of the Comstock silver bonanza and the tenuous, halting efforts of the region’s residents to create first a territorial, then a state government. Seldom has the process of western settlement and government-making been described with such detail and insight.

From Above and Below by Craig Livingston Pdf

2014 Best International Book Award, Mormon History Association For the first century of their church’s existence, Mormon observers of international events studied and cheered global revolutions as a religious exercise. As believers in divine-human co-agency, many prominent Mormons saw global revolutions as providential precursors to the imminent establishment of the terrestrial kingdom of God. French Revolutionary symbolism, socialist critiques of industrialism, American Indian nationalism, and Wilsonian internationalism all became the raw materials of Mormon millennial theologies which were sometimes barely distinguishable from secular utopianism. Many Mormon thinkers accepted secular revolutionary arguments that the old world order needed to be destroyed, not merely reformed, to clear the way for the new. In From Above and Below, author Craig Livingston tells the story of Mormon commentary on global revolutions from the European revolutions of 1848 to the collapse of Mormon faith in progress in the 1930s when revolutionary communist and fascist regimes exposed themselves as violent and repressive. As the Church bureaucratized and assimilated to mainstream American and capitalist values, Mormons became champions of the conservative view of political and social development for which they are known today. The first Mormon converts in Mexico and France, both political radicals, would scarcely recognize the arch-conservative twenty-first century Church.

The Mormon Delusion. Volume 1. Paperback Version by Jim Whitefield Pdf

The first in a series of books comprising an exposé of the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). This volume concentrates on polygamy and little known polyandry which is hidden from rank and file Mormons. Historical evidence proves the Mormon Church has rewritten its own history through lies, suppression, omission and interpolation; such that the truth is so well hidden from members; unless they look outside the Church for information; they will never know of the continued conspiracy to deceive them. Contains over 120 pages of appendices, including complete lists and analysis of all the wives and families of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, highlighting polyandrous relationships and children born into those unions; plus details of over a hundred children born post 1890 to polygamous wives of General Authorities who violated their own canonised Manifesto after they had covenanted to stop the practice. Journey to Genoa by Nevada K. Jones Pdf

Journey To Genoa is based on the remarkable lives of Benjamin T. and Jane Jones who along with their children, migrate to America on the Buena Vista, the first Latter Day Saints or Mormon ship to sail from Wales to America with converts in 1849. Two days before the ship docks in New Orleans, the Jones family, having exposed the Mormon practices of communicating with the spirits and polygamy, is excommunicated by the Latter Day Saints. Follow their journey as they make their way alone in a strange land starting in New Orleans, then working their way West to St. Louis, where the tragedy of the cholera claims the lives of three family members, then across the plains where they encounter hostile Indians, violent weather and the near death of their infant daughter. In Salt Lake City, they again confront the Mormon hierarchy. Prophet and Territorial Governor, Brigham Young throws the five Jones men in the stockade. Persuaded by the women in the family, the US Cavalry not only rescues the men, but escorts the family out of the Valley towards the Gold Fields of California. Much has been written about the 'soiled doves' of the Gold Rush, but little has been written about the respectable women who joined their husbands with their families in the Gold Fields. The Jones women take advantage of the laws of their new country that enabled them to own businesses in their own name, not just their husbands, one of which is a partnership with Levi Strauss in the beginning of his 'Levi pants' empire. Eighteen months later their success rivals that of their husbands in the Gold Fields. With their new found wealth, they cross back across the Sierra and establish a home in the rich Carson Valley, Utah Territory. There they are part of the founding of the Nevada Territory and the State of Nevada.
