Out - A Courageous Woman's Journey by Lou Anne Smoot Pdf

Lou Anne fell in love with Karen in 1956 when they were both 17 and freshmen at Baylor University. Her parents told her the relationship was sinful and unacceptable. Seeing no other option, she followed their direction, married, and remained faithful to her husband for 37 years. At age 60, after an incident in her Baptist Sunday School class, Lou Anne could no longer pretend to be straight. Her struggles to reconcile her faith with being gay take her into the depths of depression. After divorcing and "coming out," Lou Anne remained in her Baptist church for an additional fifteen years both to be true to her faith tradition and as an example of a gay Christian. She emerges as an outspoken advocate for gay rights. This story of a retired teacher, mother of four, grandmother of six, is told in an unprecedented, brutally honest manner.

My Badass Book of Saints by Maria Morera Johnson Pdf

Winner of a 2016 Association of Catholic Publishers Excellence in Publishing Award: Inspirational Books (First Place). In this edgy, honest, and often audacious book of Catholic spirituality, blogger and popular podcaster Maria Morera Johnson explores the qualities of twenty-four holy women who lived lives of virtue in unexpected and often difficult circumstances. In My Badass Book of Saints, Johnson shares her experience as a first-generation Cuban-American, educator of at-risk college students, and caregiver for a husband with Lou Gehrig's disease. Through humorous, empowering, and touching portraits of twenty-four spiritual mentors who inspired her, Johnson shows how their bravery, integrity, selflessness, perseverance, and hope helped her and can help others have courage to reach for a closer connection to God. She presents remarkable holy women and saints--including the gun-toting Servant of God Sr. Blandina Segale who tried to turn the heart of Billy the Kid, and Nazi resister Irena Sendler who helped smuggle children out of the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II--in a way that brings their vivid personalities to life and helps readers live out the challenges of their lives with virtue and conviction. The book includes a group discussion guide.

Each week for a year, she will give you thoughts, ideas and calls to action that will give you more power and strength than you can imagine. We are currently living in a world full of terror. All we have to do is turn on the T.V. and there it is - constant mass killings and threats to our personal safety. There are worldwide religious wars, religious extremist terrorists, ISIS, Jihad, the Taliban, etc. Closer to home, we have drug addicts, car accidents, plane crashes, thieves, school shootings, kidnappings, rapes, murders, riots, identity theft and all forms of criminal behavior. Then we have "acts of God," such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, floods, fires, tsunamis, deadly viruses, etc. There are more than enough things for us to be afraid of. It's no wonder we are all terrified. What can we do? We could choose to barricade ourselves in our safe room of our gated, locked, security guarded, super-reinforced brick walled homes. But eventually we would need to go out. It's unrealistic to think we could always be protected, even in our own homes. Most people have ineffective coping skills, which only serve to make matters worse rather than better. If we allow fear to control us, we will eventually go insane. We have to find a way to cope with fear in a healthy way if we want to actually live. This book will give you the courage you need to tackle any danger or threat, and live a life of peace and joy. One Woman's Political Journey by Lynn Musslewhite,Suzanne Jones Crawford Pdf

Born in Nebraska in 1875, Kate Barnard spent most of her childhood in Kansas, where family dislocation and financial failure darkened her early life. After Barnard and her father moved to Oklahoma Territory in the 1890s, Kate had unsatisfying stints as a schoolteacher and a stenographer before she discovered her life work in politics and social reform. One Woman’s Political Journey: Kate Barnard and Social Reform, 1875—1930 details the life’s work—including the political successes and failures—of a complex and courageous woman who appreciated that she was on the cutting edge of new and novel opportunities for women. Crusading for the disadvantaged, Barnard became a spokeswoman for child labor laws, a compulsory school attendance law, a juvenile justice system, and a modern penal structure. In 1907, at age thirty-two, she became the first woman in the nation elected to a state post—Commissioner of Charities and Corrections, a post created specifically for her by Oklahoma’s constitutional convention. Her dramatic rhetoric and favorable publicity attracted national attention and the admiration of Oklahomans. Convinced that women could effect positive change, she encouraged them to move into the public arena and embrace social justice reform. She also formed a coalition of farmers and laborers that led to the creation of Oklahoma’s Democratic Party. In her first term, Barnard persuaded Oklahoma’s all-male legislature to pass reforms announcing state responsibility for the welfare of children and forced changes in the state’s humanitarian institutions. In her second term, she sought protection for property rights of American Indian children. But Barnard’s career was not without obstacles. Her lack of control over budgets and personnel, along with her frequent clashing with male politicians limited her effectiveness and fueled her growing discouragement with politics. Named by Oklahoma Today as one of the fifty most influential Oklahomans in the past one hundred years, Kate Barnard is finally the deserved focus of a full-length scholarly biography.

The Courage to Ride by Ana Beker Pdf

The world of equestrian travel seldom recognizes international borders, being content to urge its mounted adherents to ride where they will. Few people better symbolize this ancient philosophy of unrestricted freedom than Ana Beker. The only child of Lithuanians who had immigrated to Argentina, Beker grew up surrounded by horses on the vast, wind-swept pampas. Her earliest memories were centered around these four legged friends. She literally grew up in the saddle, ignoring the traditions of the male oriented society which said that a woman s place was by the hearth, not in the saddle. History might have been content to let her stay in her homeland, until a fateful meeting changed her fate forever. In the early 1940s Beker heard a lecture given by Aime Tschiffely, who had himself ridden from Argentina to Washington DC ten years earlier. When the famous horseman scoffed at the young girl s idea to ride alone even further than he had, from Argentina to Canada, Beker accepted Tschiffely s challenge, mounted up, and never looked back. What followed was an equestrian journey of Homeric proportions. With her eyes always on the horizon, Beker began a 17,000 mile mounted odyssey that would fix her place in the annals of equestrian travel history. Amply illustrated, The Courage to Ride is thus not only a thrilling adventure tale, it is also a true account of a wild heart that would not be conquered.

Beautiful Courage by Diane M Covington-Carter Pdf

Between the years 1841 and 1869, over 250,000 pioneers headed west on the California Trail. Some were searching for gold and riches, others wanted opportunity, freedom and adventure. Many came for the rich farmland and milder climate. The California Trail's popularity peaked in 1852. The journey to California was roughly 2000 miles and would take a typical emigrant family five months to complete the trip. Most pioneers began their journey at "jumping off towns" along the Missouri River. When they crossed to the west bank of the Missouri River, they were leaving the United States and entering unorganized territory. There were no roads, towns, houses, stores or any means of communication for the next five months. As the emigrants traveled west, the wagon was their only home and shelter. They mostly walked the 2,000 miles in order to spare the draft animals pulling their wagons, which contained all their food and supplies. They faced many perils on their journey. Dangerous river crossings and diseases such as cholera, which could break out and take lives within a day. Also, starvation, accidents with guns and sometimes hostile Indians, crossing deserts and keeping their animals alive and well. It is estimated that one in ten emigrants died and were buried along the trail. The pioneers who traveled west hoping for better lives and broader opportunities, not only showed great courage, but they changed the course of American history. They expanded the boundary of America from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and their settling of the American West gave the United States access to vast new sources of agricultural and mineral wealth. This story chronicles one family's journey west in 1852, told through the eyes of Katie, age 13. I hope that you enjoy the story.
