The Foundations of Rhetoric (Classic Reprint) by Adams Sherman Hill Pdf

Excerpt from The Foundations of Rhetoric The Introduction sets forth as simply, clearly, and compactly as possible the leading facts of English grammar, including definitions of technical terms. The body of the book is in three Parts. Part I., which treats of Words, is divided into two books: in Book I., proper and improper expressions, arranged for convenience in classes that correspond to the several parts of speech, are set side by side; in Book II., questions of choice between words equally proper are considered. Part II., which treats of Sentences, is divided into two books: in Book I., good and bad sentences, arranged for convenience in chapters that correspond to the five important qualities of style, are set side by side; in Book II., questions of choice between sentences equally proper are considered. Part III. treats of Paragraphs. Believing that every one should be encouraged to do work for himself, I begin the discussion of every question with an example, - a practice which enables the student to discover for himself the rule under which the example falls. For young scholars this is the true order; for it is the order in which the mind naturally works. In experience, facts come before principles or rules: induction precedes deduction. Believing that attention should be drawn primarily to good English, I have, in every case in which proper and improper forms appear side by side, placed the proper form where it will first catch the eye. Within the prescribed limits, it is of course impracticable to enumerate all possible departures from propriety in the choice of words or in their arrangement. Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse by Robert J. Connors,Lisa S. Ede,Andrea A. Lunsford Pdf

Eighteen essays by leading scholars in English, speech communication, education, and philosophy explore the vitality of the classical rhetorical tradition and its influence on both contemporary discourse studies and the teaching of writing. Some of the essays investigate theoretical and historical issues. Others show the bearing of classical rhetoric on contemporary problems in composition, thus blending theory and practice. Common to the varied approaches and viewpoints expressed in this volume is one central theme: the 20th-century revival of rhetoric entails a recovery of the classical tradition, with its marriage of a rich and fully articulated theory with an equally efficacious practice. A preface demonstrates the contribution of Edward P. J.Corbett to the 20th-century revival, and a last chapter includes a bibliography of his works.

Introduction to Rhetoric (Classic Reprint) by William B. Cairns Pdf

Excerpt from Introduction to Rhetoric This book makes no claims to originality of matter. It is not to be expected that an elementary treatise on rhetoric will announce the discovery of any new principles; and the giving of new names to old things or the use of old terms in new senses would only add to a confusion now unnecessarily great. No one authority has been followed throughout; but no new term has been suggested, or familiar word redefined, or new classification introduced, when it seemed practicable to borrow the usage of some standard work. Even where improvement might possibly be made, the author has preferred to follow a well-known usage rather than to increase the diversity in nomenclature already to be found in text-books on rhetoric. The presentation of the subject has been shaped in accordance with some ideas regarding the teaching of English which, the author believes, are coming to be generally held. The first of these is that rhetoric must be presented as a reasonable study. The pupil is too likely to gain the idea that rhetoric consists of arbitrary precepts laid down by some unknown authority. The Principles of Rhetoric (Classic Reprint) by Adams Sherman Hill Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Rhetoric By supplying deficiencies that time has disclosed. Making rough places smooth, and adapting the treatment of each topic to present needs, I have tried to make the book more serviceable to advanced students of English Composition. From Book I. Of Part I. Some elementary matters have been omitted, but so much material has been added that the total number of pages is increased; in Book II. Of Part I. The old material has been re arranged and new material has been introduced. In Part II. Still greater changes have been made: Description and Narration, which were originally treated together. Are now treated in separate chapters and with greater fulness; the chapters on Argument have been thrown into one and entirely rewritten; and a chapter on Exposition has been added. Classical Rhetoric in English Poetry by Brian Vickers Pdf

Back in print after 17 years, this is a concise history of rhetoric as it relates to structure, genre, and style, with special reference to English literature and literary criticism from Ancient Greece to the end of the 18th century. The core of the book is a quite original argument that the figures of rhetoric were not mere mechanical devices, were not, as many believed, a "nuisance, a quite sterile appendage to rhetoric to which (unaccountably) teachers, pupils, and writers all over the world devoted much labor for over 2,000 years." Rather, Vickers demonstrates, rhetoric was a stylized representation of language and human feelings. Vickers supplements his argument through analyses of the rhetorical and emotional structure of four Renaissance poems. He also defines 16 of the most common figures of rhetoric, citing examples from the classics, the Bible, and major English poets from Chaucer to Pope.

Excerpt from Inductive Lessons in Rhetoric This book is an attempt to apply the true pedagogical order, and to teach the subject inductively, so that it may still be a unit, a subject of study by itself, but illustrated and enforced by all that can be applied to it in the Literature course as it advances. It should be stretched to accompany the Literature throughout the course, and each subject, as it is followed out, should receive as much as possible of illustration and applica tion from the Literature the class are reading at the time.
