Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by British School at Rome Pdf

Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 1 The title of this volume sufficiently indicates its character. The two monographs which it contains are the first fruits of the work done by the newly founded British School at Rome, and the hope of the Committee is that they will be followed in due course by many other similar papers, and will form a series not unworthy to be compared with the Mélanges of the French School at Rome. Of the two papers, that by the Director on S. Maria Antiqua will no doubt be found the most interesting by the majority of readers, but Mr. Ashby's possesses an importance of its own as a contribution to the task of reconstructing the Roman Campagna as it was before desolation and silence fell upon it. Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by British School at Rome Pdf

Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 The publication of a third volume of 'Papers' by the British School at Rome may fairly be taken as evidence of its continued activity and usefulness. The first paper contains a further instalment of the valuable work which the Assistant-Director, Mr. Ashby, is doing for the recovery of the lost history of the Campagna Romana. In this department of study Mr. Ashby has won for himself a well-deserved reputation as an indefatigable explorer, and a scrupulously accurate observer. It may be added in proof of the estimation in which Mr. Ashby is held by foreign scholars, and also of the friendly relations existing between the British School and the other foreign schools in Rome, that some of his shorter papers have been published by the French School in their Melanges. The papers by Mr. Stuart Jones and Mr. Wace are both of them valuable contributions to the study of a subject which has only recently received its due share of attention, the growth and development of Roman historical sculpture. Of especial importance are Mr. Stuart-Jones's arguments in favour of assigning the Borghese reliefs to the time of Trajan, and Mr. Wace's claim to have discovered in the Lateran and Vatican Museums fragments of reliefs belonging to the time of Domitian, which help to fill a gap in our knowledge of the development of Roman historical reliefs. A History of British Baking by Emma Kay Pdf

A cultural and social history of Britain’s breads, cakes, and pastries through the ages, from the author of Dining with the Victorians. The Great British Baking Show and its spinoffs are a modern-day phenomenon, but the British, of course, have been baking for centuries—and here, for the first time, is a comprehensive account of how Britain’s relationship with this much-loved art has changed, evolved, and progressed over time. Renowned food historian Emma Kay skillfully combines the related histories of Britain’s economy, innovation, technology, health, and cultural and social trends with the personal stories of many of the individuals involved with the whole process: the early pioneers, the recipe writers, the cooks, the entrepreneurs. From pies to puddings, medieval ovens to modern-day mass consumption, the result is a deliciously fascinating read.

Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West 450-900 by Guy Halsall Pdf

Guy Halsall relates warfare to many aspects of medieval life, economy, society and politics. This book recovers its distinctiveness, looking at warfare in a rounded context in the British Isles and Western Europe between the end of the Roman Empire and the break-up of the Carolingian Empire. Examining the raising and organization of early medieval armies and looks at the conduct of campaigns, the survey also includes a study of the equipment of warriors and the horrific experience of battle as well as an analysis of medieval fortifications and siege warfare. Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West uses historical and archaeological evidence in a rigorous and sophisticated fashion. It stresses regional variations but also places Anglo-Saxon England in the mainstream of the military developments in this era, and in the process, provides an outstanding resource for students of all levels.

A History of the Venerable English College, Rome by Francis Aidan Gasquet Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the Venerable English College, Rome: An Account of Its Origins and Work, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Besides, once for all acknowledging my indebtedness to the late Brother Foley, s.j., I desire to express my thanks for the help given me by Mgr. Mann, the Rector of the Bede College in Rome, who not only read through the ms. And suggested corrections and additions, but also has furnished me with the story of the Schola Anglorum in Rome, which forms the first chapter of this volume. Mr. Short of the English College has helped me very much in the illustrations of this volume, and I desire to express to him my thanks, as well as to Dr. Ashby and Mrs. Strong of the British School in Rome, from whom I had received much help and encouragement. Lastly, I am greatly indebted to the Lord Bishop of Clifton, who has read the proof sheets and suggested several additions and corrections.
