PARLE '93 Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe by Arndt Bode,Mike Reeve Pdf

Parallel processing offers a solution to the problem of providing the processing power necessary to help understand and master the complexity of natural phenomena and engineering structures. By taking several basic processing devices and connecting them together the potential exists of achieving a performance many times that of an individual device. However, building parallel application programs is today recognized as a highly complex activity requiring specialist skills and in-depth knowledge. PARLE is an international, European based conference which focuses on the parallel processing subdomain of informatics and information technology. It is intended to become THE European forum for interchange between experts in the parallel processing domain and to attract both industrial and academic participants with a technical programme designedto provide a balance between theory and practice. This volume contains the proceedings of PARLE '93. The PARLE conference came into existence in 1987 as an initiative from the ESPRIT I programme and the format was revised in 1991/92. PARLE '93 is the second conference with the new format and was held in Munich.

This volume presents the proceedings of the 5th International Conference Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe (PARLE '94), held in Athens, Greece in July 1994. PARLE is the main Europe-based event on parallel processing. Parallel processing is now well established within the high-performance computing technology and of stategic importance not only to the computer industry, but also for a wide range of applications affecting the whole economy. The 60 full papers and 24 poster presentations accepted for this proceedings were selected from some 200 submissions by the international program committee; they cover the whole field and give a timely state-of-the-art report on research and advanced applications in parallel computing.

Parallel Symbolic Computing: Languages, Systems, and Applications by Robert H. Halstead,Takayasu Ito Pdf

Parallel and distributed computing are becoming increasingly important as cost-effective ways to achieve high computational performance. Symbolic computations are notable for their use of irregular data structures and hence parallel symbolic computing has its own distinctive set of technical challenges. The papers in this book are based on presentations made at a workshop at MIT in October 1992. They present results in a wide range of areas including: speculative computation, scheduling techniques, program development tools and environments, programming languages and systems, models of concurrency and distribution, parallel computer architecture, and symbolic applications.

Visualization of Scientific Parallel Programs by Gerald Tomas,Christoph W. Ueberhuber Pdf

The substantial effort of parallelizing scientific programs is only justified if the resulting codes are efficient. Thus, all types of performance tuning are important to parallel software development. But performance improvements are much more difficult to achieve with parallel programs than with sequential programs. One way to overcome this difficulty is to bring in graphical tools. This monograph covers recent developments in parallel program visualization techniques and tools and demonstrates the application of specific visualization techniques and software tools to scientific parallel programs. The solution of initial value problems of ordinary differential equations, and numerical integration are treated in detail as two important examples.

Spatial Information Theory by Andrew U. Frank,Irene Campari Pdf

This volume collects the papers presented at the European Conference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT '93) held on the island of Elba, Italy, inSeptember 1993. Spatial information theory includes disciplinary topics and interdisciplinary issues dealing with the conceptualization and formalization of large-scale (geographic) space. It contributes towards a consistent theoretical basis for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Geographic information systems are widely used in administration, planning, and science in many different countries, and for a wide variety ofapplications. Research results which relevant for GIS are distributed between many disciplines and contacts between researchers have been limited. At the same time, the development of GIS has been hinderedby the lack of a sound theoretical base. This conference was intended to help remedies these problems.

Automated and Algorithmic Debugging by Peter A. Fritzson Pdf

Debugging has always been a costly part of software development, and many attempts have been made to provide automatic computer support for this task.Automated debugging has seen major develoments over the last decade. Onesuccessful development is algorithmic debugging, which originated in logic programming but was later generalized to concurrent, imperative, and lazy functional languages. Important advances have also been made in knowledge-based program debugging, and in approaches to automated debugging based on static and dynamic program slicing based on dataflow and dependence analysis technology. This is the first collected volume of papers on automated debugging and presents latest developments, tutorial papers, and surveys.

Parallel Computer Architectures by Arndt Bode,Mario Dal Cin Pdf

Parallel computer architectures are now going to real applications! This fact is demonstrated by the large number of application areas covered in this book (see section on applications of parallel computer architectures). The applications range from image analysis to quantum mechanics and data bases. Still, the use of parallel architectures poses serious problems and requires the development of new techniques and tools. This book is a collection of best papers presented at the first workshop on two major research activities at the Universitiit Erlangen-Niirnberg and Technis che Universitiit Miinchen. At both universities, more than 100 researchers are working in the field of multiprocessor systems and network configurations and methods and tools for parallel systems. Indeed, the German Science Founda tion (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) has been sponsoring the projects under grant numbers SFB 182 and SFB 342. Research grants in the form of a Sonder forschungsbereich are given to selected German Universities in portions of three years following a thoroughful reviewing process. The overall duration of such a research grant is restricted to 12 years. The initiative at Erlangen-Niirnberg was started in 1987 and has been headed since this time by Prof. Dr. H. Wedekind. Work at TU-Miinchen began in 1990, head of this initiative is Prof. Dr. A. Bode. The authors of this book are grateful to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for its continuing support in the field of research on parallel processing. The first section of the book is devoted to hardware aspects of parallel systems.

Algorithms and Parallel VLSI Architectures III by M. Moonen,F. Catthoor Pdf

A comprehensive overview of the current evolution of research in algorithms, architectures and compilation for parallel systems is provided by this publication. The contributions focus specifically on domains where embedded systems are required, either oriented to application-specific or to programmable realisations. These are crucial in domains such as audio, telecom, instrumentation, speech, robotics, medical and automotive processing, image and video processing, TV, multimedia, radar and sonar. The book will be of particular interest to the academic community because of the detailed descriptions of research results presented. In addition, many contributions feature the "real-life" applications that are responsible for driving research and the impact of their specific characteristics on the methodologies is assessed. The publication will also be of considerable value to senior design engineers and CAD managers in the industrial arena, who wish either to anticipate the evolution of commercially available design tools or to utilize the presented concepts in their own R&D programmes.

Spatio-Temporal Image Processing by Bernd Jähne Pdf

Image sequence processing is becoming a tremendous tool to analyze spatio-temporal data in all areas of natural science. It is the key to studythe dynamics of of complex scientific phenomena. Methods from computer science and the field of application are merged establishing new interdisciplinary research areas. This monograph emerged from scientific applications and thus is an example for such an interdisciplinaryapproach. It is addressed both to computer scientists and to researchers from other fields who are applying methods of computer vision. The results presented are mostly from environmental physics (oceanography) but they will be illuminating and helpful for researchers applying similar methods in other areas.
