Higher Education in the Caribbean by Glenford D. Howe Pdf

Higher Education in the Caribbean assesses the role the University of the West Indies has played since its inception in providing tertiary education to the peoples of the Caribbean and evaluates the future of the institution as it enters the twenty-first century. The work is a significant contribution to the literature in this important area of Caribbean scholarship. The collection was written to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the University of the West Indies in 1998. Contributors address such complex issues as tertiary education in the light of the rapid advances in technology that characterized the last decades of the twentieth century, demands from the political directorate for more relevant course offerings, and the challenges of managing processes of institutional change.

Teaching Language and Literacy to Caribbean Students by Dennis R. Craig Pdf

In many parts of the world there are situations where the majority of the people speak a vernacular which differs significantly in grammar and idiom from the official language with which it coexists but nevertheless share the majority of a common vocabulary. This is the case in the Caribbean where childhood speakers of English-based Creole languages have significant difficulty in acquiring Standard English and literacy in English. However, pedagogical approaches to the plight of such children have not achieved a generally accepted theoretical position and have lacked consistency over the years resulting in a high level of educational failure in the children. This book uses the English-speaking Caribbean as a case study in its presentation of a rational theoretical framework for classroom procedures in language and literacy teaching. It provides suggestion for the kind of detailed syllabi that need to be implemented at the primary, immediate post-primary and the secondary levels of schooling but goes beyond that with end of chapter notes, questions and even suggestions for practical study and research activities. Teaching Language and Literacy is ideally suited to be used as a textbook for intending as well as practising teachers of language and literacy, as well as language educations students generally at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Although the book focuses on the English-speaking Caribbean, it will have relevance in similar vernacular situations where English is an 'official' language, most notably in parts of North America and Britain where there are significant migrant populations form the Caribbean but also in African American communities of the USA where 'Black English' is the everyday norm of speech.

Black Women, Academe, and the Tenure Process in the United States and the Caribbean by Talia Esnard,Deirdre Cobb-Roberts Pdf

This book explores the meanings, experiences, and challenges faced by Black women faculty that are either on the tenure track or have earned tenure. The authors advance the notion of comparative intersectionality to tease through the contextual peculiarities and commonalities that define their identities as Black women and their experiences with tenure and promotion across the two geographical spaces. By so doing, it works through a comparative treatment of existing social (in)equalities, educational (dis)parities, and (in)justices in the promotion and retention of Black women academics. Such interpretative examinations offer important insights into how Black women’s subjugated knowledge and experiences continue to be suppressed within mainstream structures of power and how they are negotiated across contexts.

Englishes in Contact by Shondel J. Nero Pdf

Case studies of the four participants include excerpts from tape-recorded interviews, which reflect their linguistic self-perception, and sociolinguistic and educational experiences in their home countries and in New York City. Samples of their college writings over four semesters are presented and analyzed on morphosyntactic and discourse levels to determine the patterns that emerge when Creole English speakers attempt to write standard academic English.
