PATHWAYS TO THE PLANETS by John R. Strand Pdf

When my generation grew up, we were never limited by the sky or the stars. Man had already begun to probe its mysteries. Our mothers and fathers before us had created methods, maps, and ships that would forever change their planet and the way their children would view the world. So, when our small new-media company was offered the opportunity to work with John Strand and Pathways to the Planets, we all knew that it was a chance of a lifetime to work with someone who was instrumental in helping man reach that small rock in space called the moon. We live in the new world created by those brave pioneers and today are posed new frontiers; nano-science, cyberspace, molecular medicine, etc... All afforded to us humans, at least in part, by the extraordinary people portrayed in this book. Pathways to the Planets is a unique insight into the lives of those individuals as told through the memoirs of Astrophysicist John Strand. I personally, found this book to be an affirmation for anyone who seeks adventure and welcomes challenge and certainly a must read for those who were there (on earth!) during that exciting time. What a journey producing this book has been! Thermodynamics of the Earth and Planets by Alberto Patiño Douce Pdf

This textbook provides an intuitive yet mathematically rigorous introduction to the thermodynamics and thermal physics of planetary processes. It demonstrates how the workings of planetary bodies can be understood in depth by reducing them to fundamental physics and chemistry. The book is based on two courses taught by the author for many years at the University of Georgia. It includes 'Guided Exercise' boxes; end-of-chapter problems (worked solutions provided online); and software boxes (Maple code provided online). As well as being an ideal textbook on planetary thermodynamics for advanced students in the Earth and planetary sciences, it also provides an innovative and quantitative complement to more traditional courses in geological thermodynamics, petrology, chemical oceanography and planetary science. In addition to its use as a textbook, it is also of great interest to researchers looking for a 'one stop' source of concepts and techniques that they can apply to their research problems.

Life on Earth and other Planetary Bodies by Arnold Hanslmeier,Stephan Kempe,Joseph Seckbach Pdf

A trio of editors [Professors from Austria, Germany and Israel] present Life on Earth and other Planetary Bodies. The contributors are from twenty various countries and present their research on life here as well as the possibility for extraterrestrial life. This volume covers concepts such as life’s origin, hypothesis of Panspermia and of life possibility in the Cosmos. The topic of extraterrestrial life is currently ‘hot’ and the object of several congresses and conferences. While the diversity of “normal” biota is well known, life on the edge of the extremophiles is more limited and less distributed. Other subjects discussed are Astrobiology with the frozen worlds of Mars, Europa and Titan where extant or extinct microbial life may exist in subsurface oceans; conditions on icy Mars with its saline, alkaline, and liquid water which has been recently discovered; chances of habitable Earth-like [or the terrestrial analogues] exoplanets; and SETI’s search for extraterrestrial Intelligence.

Advances in Cosmology by Marilena Streit-Bianchi,Paola Catapano,Cristiano Galbiati,Enrico Magnani Pdf

Cosmology’s journey to the present day has been a long one. This book outlines the latest research on modern cosmology and related topics from world-class experts. Through it, readers will learn how multi-disciplinary approaches and technologies are used to search the unknown and how we arrived at the knowledge used and assumptions made by cosmologists today. The book is organized into four parts, each exploring a theme that has troubled humankind for centuries. Since the dawn of time, looking at the sky, humans have tried to understand their origin, the laws governing it, and what influence it all has on human life. In most ancient civilizations, astronomers embodied the power of knowledge. This knowledge was not compartmentalized, and scientists often found philosophical implications within their quests, many of which destroyed the borders between the natural sciences. Even now, as observers and scientists continue to use conjecture to generate theoretical assumptions and laws that then have to be confirmed experimentally, said theoretical and experimental searches are being linked to philosophical thinking and artistic representation, as they were up until the 18th century. This multi-disciplinary book will appeal to anyone with an interest in the fields of Astronomy, Cosmology or Physics.

Astrobiology: Future Perspectives by P. Ehrenfreund,W.M. Irvine,T. Owen,Luann Becker,Jen Blank,J.R. Brucato,Luigi Colangeli,Sylvie Derenne,Anne Dutrey,Didier Despois,Antonio Lazcano,Francois Robert Pdf

Astrobiology, a new exciting interdisciplinary research field, seeks to unravel the origin and evolution of life wherever it might exist in the Universe. The current view of the origin of life on Earth is that it is strongly connected to the origin and evolution of our planet and, indeed, of the Universe as a whole. We are fortunate to be living in an era where centuries of speculation about the two ancient and fundamental problems: the origin of life and its prevalence in the Universe are being replaced by experimental science. The subject of Astrobiology can be approached from many different perspectives. This book is focused on abiogenic organic matter from the viewpoint of astronomy and planetary science and considers its potential relevance to the origins of life on Earth and elsewhere. Guided by the review papers in this book, the concluding chapter aims to identify key questions to motivate future research and stimulate astrobiological applications of current and future research facilities and space missions. Today’s rich array of new spacecraft, telescopes and dedicated scientists promises a steady flow of discoveries and insights that will ultimately lead us to the answers we seek.

The History of the Occult Tarot by Ronald Decker,Michael Dummett Pdf

An essential volume for the libraries of all serious students of the Tarot. When the Tarot was invented in Italy during the early fifteenth century, it was simply a pack of cards used for playing games. Esoteric interpretations of the pack date from late eighteenth century France, and were confined to that country for a hundred years. But today the cards are used throughout the world and not only for fortune telling - for true believers they are the key to secret knowledge and the meaning of life. A History of the Occult Tarot is the classic work on the history of the Tarot deck and its use in occult circles. Starting with the late nineteenth century, the Decker and Dummett examine how the Tarot became the favoured divination tool of occultists, a bridge to the spirit world, and a map of the unconscious. From Theosophical to Aleister Crowley to the Order of the Golden Dawn and P.D. Ouspensky, this compelling survey of the Tarot's history describes the many fascinating decks imagined over time as well as the secret histories of mystics.

Multiple Literacies for Dance, Physical Education and Sports by Stephen G. Mogge,Shelly Huggins,Jaye Knutson,Elin E. Lobel,Pamela Segal Pdf

This book explores a spectrum of literacies relevant to dance, physical education and sports. It examines conceptions of movement literacies, disciplinary literacies and traditional school literacies. It includes theory, research and instructional practice related to the uses of traditional print, multimedia, and embodied physical literacies. These literacies function independently but are also overlapping and mutually reinforcing in comprehensive instructional planning. As movement and activity-related fields continue to explore the potential for multiple literacies, this book introduces numerous possibilities, both conceptual and practical, for consideration. · Pre-service and in-service teachers in dance and physical education programs will learn how to integrate multiple literacies in curriculum design and teaching. · Graduate students will examine theoretical premises of movement and disciplinary literacies and become familiar with original research on these topics. · Teachers, school administrators, coaches and athletic directors will use the book in order to guide the inclusion of movement and activity-based fields in the disciplinary literacy agenda now common in Pre-K through secondary schooling. Media rich chapters, including photographic, video and other graphic images, allow students to access concepts through multiple modalities
