Petrology of Polygenic Mafic-Ultramafic Massifs of the East Sakhalin Ophiolite Association by Felix P. Lesnov Pdf

The monograph is concerned with results of studies of petrology of mafic-ultramafic massifs as part of the East Sakhalin ophiolite association. It generalizes and interprets a large body of data (mainly original data) on geology, petrography, petrochemistry, and geochemistry of rocks; mineralogy and geochemistry of rock-forming and accessory minerals; chromite and platinum contents, and isotopic age of zircons from rocks of the typical mafic-ultramafic massifs of the East Sakhalin ophiolite association: Berezovka, Shel’ting, Komsomol’sk, and South Schmidt. Gabbroids from the Berezovka massif contain ultramafic xenoliths. Ultramafic rocks are locally cut by gabbroid and pyroxenite veins. Three spatially close but genetically autonomous bodies are distinguished in the structure of the massifs under study: protrusion of upper-mantle restitic ultramafic rocks (harzburgites, lherzolites, and dunites); intrusion of orthomagmatic gabbroids (gabbronorites, gabbro, and norites) that cuts it; and contact-reaction zone, located along the boundaries between gabbroid intrusion and ultramafic protrusion, which consists of hybrid ultramafic rocks (wehrlites, websterites, clinopyroxenites, and their olivine- and plagioclase-containing varieties) and hybrid gabbroids (melano- and mesocratic olivine gabbronorites and gabbro as well as troctolites). The hybrid ultramafic rocks and gabbroids are the product of interaction between mafic melts and restitic ultramafic rocks. Taking into account the later formation of the gabbroid intrusions compared to the ultramafic protrusions, the massifs in question are determined as polygenic. The idea of their polygenic formation is supported by data on the isotopic age of zircons from the Berezovka massif rocks. In this monograph the author develops his earlier proposed concept of polygenic formation of mafic–ultramafic massifs belonging to ophiolite associations. The book addresses a wide circle of petrologists and practicing geologists as well as senior-year students and postgraduates studying problems of mafic-ultramafic magmatism.

A Pictorial Guide to Metamorphic Rocks in the Field by Kurt Hollocher Pdf

This book is an illustrative introduction to metamorphic rocks as seen in the field, designed for advanced high school to graduate-level earth science and geology students to jump-start their observational skills. In addition to photographs of rocks in the field, there are numerous line diagrams and examples of metamorphic features shown in thin section. The thin section photos are all at a scale and in a context that can be related to views seen in the field through a hand lens. This book will serve as a pictorial atlas of metamorphic rocks, processes, and features. Suitable for a broad range of education, background, and interests.

Ophiolites in Earth History by Yildirim Dilek,Paul T. Robinson Pdf

The 32 papers in this volume examine the mode and nature of igneous, metamorphic, tectonic, sedimentological, and biological processes associated with the evolution of oceanic crust in different tectonic settings in Earth history as revealed in various ophiolites and ophiolite belts around the world, and the geodynamic significance of these ophiolites in the evolution of different orogenic systems. Divided into six thematic sections, the book presents a wealth of new data and syntheses from mainly Phanerozoic ophiolites around the world.

The Biomarker Guide: Volume 2, Biomarkers and Isotopes in Petroleum Systems and Earth History by K. E. Peters,C. C. Walters,J. M. Moldowan Pdf

The second edition of The Biomarker Guide is a fully updated and expanded version of this essential reference. Now in two volumes, it provides a comprehensive account of the role that biomarker technology plays both in petroleum exploration and in understanding Earth history and processes. Biomarkers and Isotopes in Petroleum Exploration and Earth History itemizes parameters used to genetically correlate petroleum and interpret thermal maturity and extent of biodegradation. It documents most known petroleum systems by geologic age throughout Earth history. The Biomarker Guide is an invaluable resource for geologists, petroleum geochemists, biogeochemists, and environmental scientists.

Paleogeodynamics by Lev P. Zonenshain,Mikhail Ivanovich Kuzʹmin Pdf

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. This volume presents the English language translation of L.P. Zonenshain and M.I. Kuzmin's classic text Paleogeodynamics, first published in Russian in 1992. The study of paleogeodynamics, or plate tectonics, has had an incredible impact on geological research in the former Soviet Union. The authors of this text were among the first to systematically study and utilize the plate tectonic model in the Soviet Union. Within this book the entire sweep of plate tectonic observation, interpretation and example are presented, including detailed descriptions and analysis related to oceanic ridge structures, geochemistry, plate tectonic processes, seismology, tectonostratigraphy terranes, paleoclimatology, paleomagnetism, reconstruction of past plate motions and global Earth history models. Because Zonenshain and his colleagues at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanography pioneered the quantitatively precise mathematical analysis of past plate and terrane motions, one of the sections is highly mathematical, presenting for the first time their development of reconstruction techniques based upon spherical geometry. The extensive bibliography presents and combines both Russian and English language references. Also unique to this volume are numerous examples taken from the plate tectonic history of portions of the former Soviet Union and from data collected during Soviet oceanographic cruises.
