Phthalate Esters by Charles Staples Pdf

Phthalate esters are an important class of chemicals widely used in commercial applications, primarily as plasticizers to soften vinyl, but they are also used in consumer products. This book reviews the state of the scientific knowledge of phthalate esters in the environment. Key information reported includes: analytical methodologies; a compilation of concentration measurements in water, sediment, soil, air, dust, and food; plus an assessment of critical exposure pathways. In addition, key physical properties data and fate characteristics that control exposure are reviewed. Also included are pertinent ecotoxicity data and mammalian toxicity and human health information. Finally, the monograph addresses potential environmental risks.

The Production, Use and Distribution of Phthalic Acid Esters in Canada by T. D. Leah Pdf

"This study is the fourth in the Environmental Contaminants Inventory Series. The first chapter contains an introduction to and summary of the material detailed throughout the report. The second and third chapters review the literature on ortho-phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in the environment and their effects on human health. By combining information on exposure and toxicity, an attempt is made to assess the present hazard to human health and the environment posed by observed levels of PAEs in the environment. In the fourth chapter, the production and use of PAEs in Canada is analyzed for the year 1973. The fifth chapter covers the releases of PAEs to the environment from production and processing, and from the use and disposal of articles that contain PAEs. Estimates indicate that in 1973 releases from production and processing activities comprised approximately 20% of the total, whereas use and disposal activities accounted for the remaining 80%. These releases have been presented in terms of major drainage basins to give the data more regional significance. The sixth chapter reviews the chemistry and properties of PAEs, the major processes used in producing and fabricating flexibilized (plasticized) poly (vinyl chloride) and the use of related chemicals such as phthalic anhydride and terephthalic acid. The final chapter summarizes the conclusions and recommendations based on the findings of this study. Throughout the report, the data are clarified through the use of a material flow chart, tables, and maps"--Abstract, page vii.

Phthalates and Cumulative Risk Assessment by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology,Committee on the Health Risks of Phthalates Pdf

People are exposed to a variety of chemicals throughout their daily lives. To protect public health, regulators use risk assessments to examine the effects of chemical exposures. This book provides guidance for assessing the risk of phthalates, chemicals found in many consumer products that have been shown to affect the development of the male reproductive system of laboratory animals. Because people are exposed to multiple phthalates and other chemicals that affect male reproductive development, a cumulative risk assessment should be conducted that evaluates the combined effects of exposure to all these chemicals. The book suggests an approach for cumulative risk assessment that can serve as a model for evaluating the health risks of other types of chemicals.

Some Chemicals Present in Industrial and Consumer Products, Food and Drinking-water by IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans,International Agency for Research on Cancer Pdf

This volume of the IARC Monographs provides an assessment of the carcinogenicity of 18 chemicals present in industrial and consumer products or food (natural constituents, contaminants, or flavorings) or occurring as water-chlorination by-products. The compounds evaluated include the widely used plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and the food contaminant 4-methylimidazole. In view of the limited agent-specific information available from epidemiological studies, the IARC Monographs Working Group relied mainly on carcinogenicity bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to evaluate the carcinogenic hazards to humans exposed to these agents.

Phthalates by Gerardo L. Moretti,Drago Romano Pdf

Phthalates are esters of phthalic acid and are a group of chemicals of high environmental relevance due to their production rates and ecotoxicological potential. Phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers in PVC plastics, wherein many consumer products contain specific members of this family of chemicals. In this book, the authors present current research on the chemical properties and impacts on health and the environment of phthalates. Topics include phthalate contamination in two estuaries from the Basque Coast; bioaccumulation and intracellular signal modifications of in vivo and in vitro models of phthalate esters; DEHP behavior in contact with liquid food simulants, blood, saliva and soil; removal of phthalates from the environment; gas phase fragmentation reactions of phthalate ions; the effects of DEHP exposure on brain development; and phthalate toxicogenomics and health effects.
