Physico-Chemical Methods (Classic Reprint) by J. Traube Pdf

Excerpt from Physico-Chemical Methods In the preface to the German edition the author calls attention to the ever - widening application of physico - chemical methods in the various branches of chemistry. He says the vapor density, melting point, boiling point, and specific gravity are no longer the only constants the determination of which is necessary in organic chemistry. The electric conductivity, specific refraction, thermal constants, depression of the freezing point and vapor pressure, etc., are of fundamental importance in determining the constitution and molecular weight of substances, as well as in determining their identity and degree of purity. The Application of Physico-Chemical Theory by R. Kremann Pdf

Excerpt from The Application of Physico-Chemical Theory: To Technical Processes and Manufacturing Methods The young chemist frequently feels this in his first few terms, and I have found that of all the problems of physical chemistry the beginner shows most interest in those which have a bearing on technical questions. On this account, for some years now I have devoted a special section of my main course on physical chemistry to The application of physico-chemical theories to technical problems. The editor and publisher of this series recognise the great importance of physical chemistry in chemical technology, and I am much indebted to them for the readiness with which they have acceded to my desire to publish my lectures in this series, The methods of manufacture of chemical technology. This volume of the series is to some extent a resume of physico chemical theories as applied to technical problems, which it is hoped will meet the requirements of chemists engaged in practice, as well as of students. Physical Chemistry and Its Applications in Medical and Biological Science (Classic Reprint) by Alex Findlay Pdf

Excerpt from Physical Chemistry and Its Applications in Medical and Biological Science The rapid development which has taken place in Physical Chemistry during the past two decades, and the success which has attended the application of physico chemical principles and methods to the study of problems in Medical and Biological Science, render it of essential importance for students and workers in these departments to become familiar with the chief facts and theories, as well as methods, of Physical Chemistry. As this Science is not usually included in the curri onlum of study imposed on students of the biological sciences generally, it was with pleasure that the writer acceded to a request to give a short course of lectures on the subject, having in View, more especially, the require ments of members of the medical profession. No attempt at completeness has been made, for that would have been impossible in the short space of time available; but rather the desire was to give an elementary introduction to the subject, with the hope of encouraging and facilitating a more systematic and thorough study of physical chemistry ou' the part of students of medicine and biology. Exercises in Physical Chemistry (Classic Reprint) by Walther Adolf Roth Pdf

Excerpt from Exercises in Physical Chemistry This explains the reason that certain standard substances (as sodium chloride, silver nitrate, silver chloride, chloroform, and benzene) are suggested for use in exercises on quite independent work. I have laid special stress on the practical application of physical-chemical methods in quantitative analysis, and in the determination of the constitution of compounds. I have, however, not treated of electrolysis and spectrum analysis, since the student is supposed to be acquainted with these subjects from the course of analytical chemistry. An Introduction to Chemical Analysis (Classic Reprint) by Elbert William Rockwood Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to Chemical Analysis Within the last few years the methods and theories of physical chemistry have been more and more successfully applied in different fields of medicine. Among the theories which have been most fruitful in results stands prominently the ionic theory of the nature of solutions and the action of many classes of dissolved compounds. It is self-evident that a knowledge of this is a necessity for those who wish to acquire an acquaintance with chemistry from the present-day stand point or to keep pace with its developments. The surest means of gaining familiarity with these conceptions is by applying them practically in every-day work. Theoretical Principles of the Methods of Analytical Chemistry Based Upon Chemical Reactions (Classic Reprint) by G. Chesneau Pdf

Excerpt from Theoretical Principles of the Methods of Analytical Chemistry Based Upon Chemical Reactions The Object which analytical chemistry is to pursue, then, is not only to increase the number Of methods by extending the list Of insoluble precipitates, but also, and especially, to increase the exact ness Of the methods already known, by investigating in the light of the recent physico-chemical theories the conditions which render the reactions as complete as possible. The moment seems to have arrived for analytical chemistry to enter this path under the stimulus Of industrial demands which are endeavoring more and more to vary the qualities Of the ordinary metals by the introduction Of accurately proportioned infinitesimal quantities Of foreign elements. The bond which unites analytical chemistry to general chemistry thus finds itself strengthened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Manual of Physico-Chemical Measurements, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by Wilhelm Ostwald Pdf

Excerpt from Manual of Physico-Chemical Measurements, Vol. 1 A book such as this can of course make no pretension to com pleteness. There will undoubtedly be many devices and appliances which I have left unnoticed, and for the measurement of some of the magnitudes there may be simpler or more accurate methods. I therefore ask the assistance of my colleagues into whose' hands the book may come, and shall be grateful for any hint which 'will lead to its future improvement. Select Methods by William Crookes Pdf

Excerpt from Select Methods: In Chemical Analysis Chiefly Inorganic A complete list Of separations has not been attempted. Where no process of separation or estimation is given, it may be inferred that the Author has had no experience in any but the well-known methods employed in most laboratories and to have introduced these ordinary processes into the work, simply for the sake of filling up gaps, would have largely increased its bulk without add ing materially to its value. To save space, the description of a process is frequently discontinued at the point where the sub stances under separation are brought to such a state that the concluding steps are obvious. NO special system of weights and measures has been employed many of the descriptions having been condensed from the original memoirs, it was thought better to retain the system therein adopted, so as to have simple numbers to deal with, instead of having to convert them to one common scale and to introduce decimals. Thus, when an author says, take 8 grains of a sub stance, O51816 gramme has not been substituted; and where 10 grammes are mentioned, he has not put i54ss4o grains. When not otherwise expressed, all degrees are according to the Centigrade scale. Formulae have been avoided as far as practicable. Textbook of Physical Chemistry (Classic Reprint) by Azariah Thomas Lincoln Pdf

Excerpt from Textbook of Physical Chemistry The method of measurement is the comparison of the quantity to be measured with our unit. This may be ac complished (i) by applying the unit directly to the quantity to be measured, as that of a foot rule to a floor to find its dimensions, a graduated vessel to the liquid to be measured or (2) by the effect the particular quantity to be measured has as compared to the effect that unit quantity has, as in determining the strength of an alkali by titrating it against a standard acid which has been expressed in terms of our unit alkali, or any of our quantitative methods for deter mining the quantity of a particular substance present, as by determining the refractivity of a liquid, the electrical conductance, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Methods of Organic Analysis (Classic Reprint) by Henry C. Sherman Pdf

Excerpt from Methods of Organic Analysis IN rewriting this work after six years of constant use in the classroom and laboratory, the author has endeavored to keep in mind the needs both of students and of practising chemists. Methods which are commonly used as exercises for beginners (such, for example, as the determination of alcohol by the distillation method) are fully described with detailed explana tory and precautionary notes, while those methods which are apt to be used only by advanced students or professional chemists are given more concisely. At the end of each chapter will be found, first a list of reference books arranged alphabetically by authors, and then a chronological list of journal articles, bulletins, etc., particularly of the last few years. The abbreviations are those used by the American Chemical Society in the publication of Chemical Abstracts. An Introduction to the Physics and Chemistry of Colloids (Classic Reprint) by Emil Hatschek Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Physics and Chemistry of Colloids The present work is a slightly enlarged reprint of a series of articles published in The Chemical World, which in their turn were based on a course of ten lectures delivered at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute to students of very varied attainments and interested in every branch of chemistry and of chemical industry. The book accordingly does not aim at a completeness precluded alike by its compass and the extremely vigorous growth of the subject, but is only intended to introduce readers with a reasonable knowledge of physics and chemistry to the fundamental facts and methods of a branch of physical chemistry on the importance of which it is hardly necessary to insist. Contemporary Chemistry by E. E. Fournier D'albe Pdf

Excerpt from Contemporary Chemistry: A Survey of the Present State, Methods and Tendencies of Chemical Science The following pages are intended to give a bird's-eye A view of the whole field of modem chemistry. A subject distinguished for the diversity of its methods and the isolation of many of its important results is one which naturally presents considerable difficulties to any attempt at a concise summing-up. But a readable summary, however inadequate, is so obviously desirable in the interests of chemistry and (more especially) its allied sciences that the author has ventured to essay the task with such assistance as the excellent chemical publications of the day and the kindness of some of the acknowledged leaders of chemical research placed at his disposal. The aim throughout has been to include the latest phase of each subject, down to the end of 1910. Where new terms and conceptions have arisen, these are defined and explained, so as to bridge the gap between the chemical teaching of the last generation and the schools of the present day. Special attention has (largely for personal reasons) been paid to physical chemistry and to current attempts at physical and electrical theories of chemical phenomena, in the belief that such theories bear within them the germs of future discoveries.
