Attention and Performance XI by Michael I. Posner,Oscar S.M. Marin Pdf

Originally published in 1985, this volume presents the proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Attention and Performance. With few exceptions, the central emphasis in previous meetings of the Attention and Performance Association was on the information-processing approach to normal human cognition. This emphasis had been supplemented, on occasion, by studies employing EEG methods, but there had not been systematic attempts to relate the information-processing approach to work in the neurosciences. This volume seeks to emphasize the search for mechanism with such methods of approach as the following: anatomical, physiological, neuropsychological, behavioral, and computational. The editors believed that this was in accord with recent developing trends in cognition and particularly with developments in the study of attention at the time.

Baroreceptor Reflexes by P.B. Persson,H.R. Kirchheim Pdf

It is a great honor and pleasure for me to introduce this book; an honor, because of the scientific renown and authority of the investigators who have edited the volume and contributed the chapters; a pleasure, because my own long-lasting interest in the baroreflexes has always gone in the same directions as those along which the authors of this book have conceived and organized their work. It is particularly meaningful, in my opinion, that the very title of this volume underlines the integrative functions and the clinical aspects of baroreceptor reflexes. Under the aspect of integration, it is more and more apparent that baroreceptor reflexes, though preponderantly influencing cardiovascular functions, are not limited to cardiovascular control. Their influence on respiration has been well known since the earliest studies on baroreflexes, and wider influences have more recently been shown, e. g. , on hormone release, on sleep and vigilance, and on emotional behavior. Even within the scope of cardiovascular regulation, the integrated action of baroreflexes is not only directly exerted on the heart and blood vessels, but is also exerted through more devious but no less important routes, such as renin release from juxtaglomerular cells and sodium and water reabsorption by the renal tubules.

Individual Differences and Psychopathology by Anthony Gale,John A. Edwards Pdf

Physiological Correlates of Human Behaviour, Vol. 3: Individual Differences and Psychopathology offers an introduction to biological research into human behavior. The book discusses the three major dimensions of personality (extraversion, neuroticism and psychoticism) and the major theories of the underlying psychophysiological causes for the observed differences in behavior; and the theory of anxiety. The text also describes the measures of individual differences in habituation of physiological responses; the perspectives on pain; the cortical correlates of intelligence; and sensation seeking as a biosocial dimension of personality. The individual differences in evoked potentials; Pavlov's nervous system typology; theories of psychosomatic disorders; and the role of learning and organismic variables in criminality are also considered. The book further tackles some problems and controversies in the psychophysiological investigation of schizophrenia; the psychophysiological contributions to psychotherapy research; and the use of psychophysiological measures for investigating the influence of social factors on psychiatric relapse. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and behavioural psychologists will find the book invaluable.

Driving Future Vehicles by A M Parkes,S. Franzen Pdf

This book has been generated by the EC-funded Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe DRIVE collaborative research programme. it brings together work on driver behaviour, traffic safety, and human- machine interfacing to review the state of the art in Europe in terms of systems specification, design, evaluation, and implementation for near- future vehicles.; Changes in vehicle functionality will be fundamental through the 1990's, and this book demonstrates that a purely technology driven approach is a recipe for disaster; integrated and co-ordinated multidisciplinary initiatives in complex system design are preferable and are more likely to deliver system efficiency, acceptability, and safety.; It is aimed at transport ergonomists, vehicle designers, HCI researchers, applied psychologists and cognitive ergonomists.
