Physiology of the Kidney and of Water Balance by P. Deetjen,J.W. Boylan,K. Kramer Pdf

This little book was assembled from the authors' lectures to medical students and was originally published as one volume in the series Human Physiology, edited by O. H. Gauer, K. Kramer, and R. Jung. The editors intended that each volume in this series be independent of the others and we have kept to this purpose. We have included here only material that we feel is necessary for medical students to know in order to understand kidney function in health and, by later extrapolation, in disease. The contents rest on accepted principles estab lished by experiments, and little space is given to what is controversial, hypo thetical, or unresolved. We are pleased that Dr. Coxon has been motivated to prepare an English language version of this text. We hope that it will serve as a ready reference and review source for the beleaguered medical student. P. Deetjen J. W. Boylan K.

Normal Renal Function by W. J. O'Connor Pdf

This book has developed from an earlier monograph, 'Renal Function' (1962; London, Edward Arnold). It retains the general purpose of that book in relating the composition of the blood to the volume and com position of the urine of animals, including the new data of the intervening 20 years. As indicated by its title, this new book also has the particular purpose of studying the urine of animals in a normal environment and eating food usual to the species. Renal physiology illustrates a dilemma which arises also in other fields. Advanced technology, harnessed by accumulated experimental skill, now allows detailed investigation of basal processes. Micropuncture experiments have greatly advanced our understanding of the processes of glomerular fil tration and tubular reabsorption and have contribut ed to the wider discussion of the physicochemical nature of the movement of water and ions across cell surfaces. But experiments at microscopic or cell ular level demand experimental conditions in which the systems are abstracted from their natural en vironment, either as isolated perfused preparations or with the anaesthetised animal merely providing support for a tissue left in situ. The arguments from such experiments, important though they are towards understanding the basal processes, readily become remote from the reality of the normal animal.

Kidney and Body Fluids by L. Takács Pdf

Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 11: Kidney and Body Fluids offers a thorough discussion of the experiments, research, and investigations done on the function, composition, and chemical reactions the kidney and body fluids undergo. Divided into 10 parts and having 88 chapters, the book features lengthy literature of authors who have actively pursued research on kidney and body fluids. Areas covered include renal cell cultures and blood flow; glomerulotubular balance; cell ionic activity and element analysis; electrophysiology and epithelial transport; and tubular handling of phosphate and calcium. Tubular acidification, regulation of water balance, and extracellular volume control are also discussed. The text presents as well how the study of the kidney and body fluids have captured the interest of physiologists and other individuals interested in this discipline. The book is a dependable source of information for those interested in the composition, function, and chemical reactions of the kidney and body fluids. The text is highly recommended to scholars and students who find this field of study interesting.

Neural Control of Renal Function, Second Edition by Ulla C. Kopp Pdf

The kidney is innervated with efferent sympathetic nerve fibers reaching the renal vasculature, the tubules, the juxtaglomerular granular cells, and the renal pelvic wall. The renal sensory nerves are mainly found in the renal pelvic wall. Increases in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity reduce renal blood flow and urinary sodium excretion by activation of α1-adrenoceptors and increase renin secretion rate by activation of β1-adrenoceptors. In response to normal physiological stimulation, changes in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity contribute importantly to homeostatic regulation of sodium and water balance. The renal mechanosensory nerves are activated by stretch of the renal pelvic tissue produced by increases in renal pelvic tissue of a magnitude that may occur during increased urine flow rate. Under normal conditions, the renal mechanosensory nerves activated by stretch of the sensory nerves elicits an inhibitory renorenal reflex response consisting of decreases in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity leading to natriuresis. Increasing efferent sympathetic nerve activity increases afferent renal nerve activity which, in turn, decreases efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity by activation of the renorenal reflexes. Thus, activation of the afferent renal nerves buffers changes in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity in the overall goal of maintaining sodium balance. In pathological conditions of sodium retention, impairment of the inhibitory renorenal reflexes contributes to an inappropriately increased efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity in the presence of sodium retention. In states of renal disease or injury, there is a shift from inhibitory to excitatory reflexes originating in the kidney. Studies in essential hypertensive patients have shown that renal denervation results in long-term reduction in arterial pressure, suggesting an important role for the efferent and afferent renal nerves in hypertension.

Principles of Renal Physiology by Christopher J. Lote Pdf

/ 7 It is eleven years since the first edition of this book was published and six years since the second edition. There have been many advances in renal physiology over these years, a fact demonstrated by a comparison of the index of this new edition with that of 11 years ago. For example, words in the index of this edition which do not appear in the first edition include atrial natriuretic peptide, dopamine, erythropoietin, nitric oxide and prorenin. For this new edition, there are many completely new sections, includ ing a new chapter on tubular transport mechanisms, a section on the bladder and micturition and sections on the renal handling of magne sium, renal function in pregnancy and age-related changes in function. The accounts of renin synthesis, the actions of atrial natriuretic peptide and the mechanisms of ammonia secretion, have been rewritten and updated. The presentation of the book for this third edition is also new. The majority of the figures have been redrawn and 'boxes' have been included to present additional material (particularly information of clinical relevance), which can be read separately from the main text. The most popular features of the book - notably its cOllciseness and logical progression through renal physiology - have been retained.
