The American Cinematographer, Vol. 2 by Silas E. Snyder Pdf

Excerpt from The American Cinematographer, Vol. 2: February 1, 1922 At that time we were just beginning to see and realize the possibility of vivifying a picture production through art in photography. Attempts had been made in America, as well as abroad, to bring forth light effects and a sense of loom position to beautify the appearance of pictures which were at that time rather crude and almost childish in detail. The conversation on this subject drifted, and being a cameraman, I was, of course, very enthusiastic, as I could foresee the great possibility of expressing the artistic sense which I knew was latent in the very soul of many of the boys who were just merely cranking at that time. Several pictures had been praised or criticized, ao cording to their merit, when someone mentioned the name of a producer, who, with great sincerity was then striving to put in his productions the artistic and photo graphic touches which, in his estimation, would appeal to the cultured public, and also please the less intelligent or uneducated audiences. After the Photo-secession by Christian A. Peterson Pdf

The beautiful and seductive images of an overlooked movement, reproduced in their full tonal range. Much has been written about Alfred Stieglitz and his role in establishing photography as an art. Little attention, however, has been paid to the pictorial photographers who followed Stieglitz, among them Imo Jean Cunningham, Edward Weston, Clarence H. White, and a host of others -- those who, in a widespread movement, approached photography in a painterly fashion, creating beautiful images through the use of careful lighting, manipulated tones, soft focus effects, and artistic compositions. In this important volume, Christian A. Peterson finally gives the pictorialists of the first half of the twentieth century their due. He describes the backgrounds of the movement, their methods, the photo clubs they belonged to, and their work, illustrated here with ninety-three stunning reproductions. The movement seemed to die out, Peterson suggests, with the rising popularity of 35mm photography in mid-century, when the care and slow working procedures required by large-format cameras became unpopular. 93 full-color photographs

Abel's Photographic Weekly, Vol. 30 by Juan C. Abel Pdf

Excerpt from Abel's Photographic Weekly, Vol. 30: July 1, 1922 But there is no place like home, whether it be east or west, in plain or mountain, in the city or in some isolated community. Speaking generally, photographers seem to have done better during the past months in the west than in the east. Yet it is not all roses and we found some photographers in the North-east who were falling behind in their business. But as the Pacific Coast is the playground of those who have money to spend and with the very evident signs of a return to normal business in the east, the slight slump on the Coast should not be of long duration. The Seattle convention of the Pacific North-west photographers was most interesting. Dynamic George Harris was the feature of the meeting and at the close of his second address, the members gave him three rousing cheers. He spoke of co-operation between employer and employes, of methods of arousing interest in photography, of office systems and numerous other things which will not be readily forgotten by those who heard him. The display of pictures was really a splendid one. The fine collection from the National and the foreign exhibits were added to by the pic tures of local photographers. And again we have to express our admira tion for the fine work being done by these photographers of the North west. Both in portraiture and in commercial work, they easily rank with the good ones of the east. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Clarence H. White and His World by Anne McCauley Pdf

Restoring a gifted art photographer to his place in the American canon and, in the process, reshaping and expanding our understanding of early 20th-century American photography Clarence H. White (1871–1925) was one of the most influential art photographers and teachers of the early 20th century and a founding member of the Photo-Secession. This beautiful publication offers a new appraisal of White’s contributions, including his groundbreaking aesthetic experiments, his commitment to the ideals of American socialism, and his embrace of the expanding fields of photographic book and fashion illustration, celebrity portraiture, and advertising. Based on extensive archival research, the book challenges the idea of an abrupt rupture between prewar, soft-focus idealizing photography and postwar “modernism” to paint a more nuanced picture of American culture in the Progressive era. Clarence H. White and His World begins with the artist’s early work in Ohio, which shares with the nascent Arts and Crafts movement the advocacy of hand production, closeness to nature, and the simple life. White’s involvement with the Photo-Secession and his move to New York in 1906 mark a shift in his production, as it grew to encompass commercial portraiture and an increasing commitment to teaching, which ultimately led him to establish the first institutions in America to combine instruction in both technical and aesthetic aspects of photography. The book also incorporates new formal and scientific analysis of White’s work and techniques, a complete exhibition record, and many unpublished illustrations of the moody outdoor scenes and quiet images of domestic life for which he was revered.

Creative Continuum by Christian Peterson Pdf

The definitive volume on the leading group of creative photographers working after World War I to midcentury. This book fully examines the Pictorial Photographers of America, the most important organization of artistic camera workers of their time. It covers their beginnings in 1916, under the guiding light of Clarence H. White, and their activities until 1950, when the movement of pictorial photography dissolved. The PPA published handsome annuals during the 1920s and around the same time commenced the first regular series of high-end exhibitions, termed "salons," in New York. It also presented frequent instructional gatherings at its Manhattan headquarters for decades, influencing two generations of ambitious photographers.
