Plastics Additives and Testing by Muralisrinivasan Natamai Subramanian Pdf

“Plastics Additives and Testing” is a practical book for engineers and operators and discusses both inorganic and organic chemicals that are widely used as additives in plastics processing operations. It is common practice today to use analytical techniques to improve plastics processing. Because it is critically important to manufacture quality products, a reasonable balance must be drawn between control requirements and parameters for improved processing method with respect to plastics additives. This book serves to implement this balance in the manufacturing line. Written by a successful, international consultant with an excellent publishing track record, it combines plastics additives, testing and quality control and is a valuable and critical book for engineers and operators to have when performing their tasks.

Spectra for the Identification of Additives in Food Packaging by Ben van Lierop,Laurence Castle,Alexandre Feigenbaum,Achim Boenke Pdf

This new book on additives used in plastics for food contact, can be seen as a companion to the 1993 publication Spectra for the Identification of Monomers in Food Packaging [1, 2]. That earlier book presented information on monomeric substances listed in Directive 901128/EEC [3], which restricts the range of monomers and other starting substances that can be used for the production of plastics materials and articles intended for food contact applications. As a logical supplement to the collection of monomers and other starting substances, the preparation of a reference collection and a Handbook of analytical data of additives was undertaken with funding from The European Commission under the Standards Measurements and Testing programme. We then give a collection of spectra for the identification of 100 of the most important additives used in plastics packaging and coatings. Infra-red (FT-IR) and mass spectra (MS) are presented, as in the monomers book, but we have extended the scope to include proton nuclear magnetic resonance eH-NMR) spectra and gas-chromatographic (GC) data. Legal Framework The Commission of the European Communities provides in Synoptic Document N. 7 [4] a provisional list of additives used for the production of food contact plastics. This Synoptic Document anticipates a Directive on additives for food contact plastics. One hundred of the most important additives were selected from this provisional list after extensive consultation with researchers in the field and with representatives from European industry (Food Contact Additives Panel (FCA) sector group of the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC).

Handbook for the Chemical Analysis of Plastic and Polymer Additives, Second Edition by Michael Bolgar,Jack Hubball,Joseph Groeger,Susan Meronek Pdf

Polymers have undoubtedly changed the world through many products that improve our lives. However, additives used to modify the overall characteristics of these materials may not be fully disclosed or understood. These additives may present possible environmental and health hazards. It is important to monitor consumer products for these compounds using high-quality reference materials and dependable analytical techniques. The Handbook for the Chemical Analysis of Plastic and Polymer Additives, Second Edition provides the necessary tools for chemists to obtain a more complete listing of additives present in a particular polymeric matrix. It is designed to serve as a valuable source for those monitoring a polymer/plastic material for regulatory or internal compliance. It also helps analysts to correctly identify the complex nature of the materials that have been added to the polymer/plastic. With 50 additional compounds, this second edition nearly doubles the number of additives in several categories, including processing aids, antistatic compounds, mould release products, and blowing agents. It includes a listing that can be cross-referenced by trade name, chemical name, CAS number, and even key mass unit ions from the GC/MS run. Addressing additives from an analytical viewpoint, this comprehensive handbook helps readers identify the additives in plastics. This information can be used to assess compliance with regulations issued by the FDA, US EPA, EU, and other agencies.

Additive Migration from Plastics Into Food by T. R. Crompton Pdf

Additive Migration from Plastics Into Food examines the intrusion of foreign chemicals into food via additives present in plastics packaging and the toxic hazards they pose to consumers. This book shows how direct contact between the packed commodity and the plastic is likely to result in the transfer of polymer additives, adventitious impurities such as monomers, catalyst remnants, and residual polymerization solvents, and low-molecular-weight polymer fractions from the plastic into the packaged material. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins with a discussion on the various types of plastics used in food packaging as well as the types of substances present in the plastic that might migrate into the food. Subsequent chapters review world literature on extraction testing and the analysis of extractants. The determination of various types of polymer additives and residual monomers in extractants of liquid foodstuffs and beverages, solid foods, edible oils, and fatty foodstuffs is considered. The final chapter looks at the legal requirements concerning the use of additives in food-grade plastics in various countries. This monograph will be of interest to those in the plastics industry, food and beverage packaging industry, and large retail outlets such as supermarkets, along with medical and public health officials, legislators, environmentalists, and the general public.

Practical Testing and Evaluation of Plastics by Achim Frick,Claudia Stern,Vibunanthan Muralidharan Pdf

Engineering with polymers is a growing technical field which requires special knowledge. Filling a need, this ready reference brings together the hard-to-get and recently acquired knowledge usually only found scattered in the original literature. At the beginning, the reference introduces plastics as a class of technical materials, gives an overview of their properties, presents plastics processing and its possible influence on the achievable quality of plastic parts. Afterwards, plastics testing is presented as a separate, practical-scientific field of work. The possibilities and fields of application of plastics testing will be discussed. This is followed by a comprehensive treatment of the individual, relevant test areas for the characterization and qualification of plastics and plastic molded parts made from them, with descriptions of the corresponding, practical test methods. A comprehensive index provides easy access to relevant information for successful engineering with plastics and suitable methods for material characterization and for quality assurance and damage analysis of parts. Written by experienced academics and industrial researchers and developers who know the problems of plastics engineers in their daily work - and the solutions - inside out, this book offers first-hand practical knowledge and intensive discussion. The book is aimed at industry, scientists and students involved in plastics and plastic engineering and aims to help them gain the necessary understanding of polymer materials and knowledge of practical testing and evaluation of plastics.
