Poems and Songs on Home and Abroad (Classic Reprint) by Mrs. Elizabeth Colville Pdf

Excerpt from Poems and Songs on Home and Abroad She never meant that some should be in bondage from their birth. She never forged oppression's chain nor made the cruel lash, She never meant that man should seek to barter human esh But cunning knaves forsook her laws, and from her path they ran, And this is how the tyrant came to crush his fellow man. The Later Poems and Songs of James Linen by James Linen Pdf

Excerpt from The Later Poems and Songs of James Linen: Written Between the Years 1865 and 1873 During the long period, of nearly forty years, I have received from you many kind favors of a social and literary character. You smiled approvingly on my earliest poetic efforts. Having the same veneration for your exalted worth as a man, with an undiminished admiration for your ability as a poet, as I entertained when a youth, to whom could I inscribe this production with so much grateful propriety as to yourself? My larger volumes were dedicated to you, and, with your permission, I lay down respectfully at the shrine of your genius this little offering of my humble Muse. Songs and Ballads of Greater Britain (Classic Reprint) by E. A. Helps Pdf

Excerpt from Songs and Ballads of Greater Britain Tms volume, in which poems are literally brought together from the ends of the earth, contains a selection of poetry from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, India, and the Crown Colonies descriptive of nature, life, and incident in these parts of the empire. Several motives have inspired it. It is an attempt to bring into closer touch the Dominions, with a View to their better understanding of each other's trials, difficulties, and successes. It is an attempt also to make us at home realise more fully the great qualities and strenuous lives of those who have played so large a part in building up the empire - we may have written better poetry, they have lived it - and also lest we forget to keep alive, both at home and abroad, memories of the courage, endurance, and heroic deeds of the pioneers, and ignore the debt we owe to those who have proved worthy sons of the empire, and have opened up so many avenues for our sons and daughters to a wider, freer life, to health and wealth. Lastly, I hope this book will introduce readers at home to poetry which has a charm of its own, due to its freshness, originality, virility and variety of subject, and incidentally it can scarcely fail to give its readers some notion of the wealth, beauty, and resources of various parts of the empire. It may be said, too, that the cultivation of poetry and the imagination are never more to be desired than when the material needs of growing civilisation tend to deaden the higher feelings. It is then that the inspiration of the poet is needed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Songs and Miscellaneous Poems (Classic Reprint) by John Imrie Pdf

Excerpt from Songs and Miscellaneous Poems Among the diverse interests of this restless money-grubbing world, there is one which should hold a larger place than it does in the affections of the masses, - namely, the honest, unaffected love of home and home pleasures. In these days we are all of us too much disposed to seek enjoyment abroad, and to figure more than is good for us in the eye of the public. The craving for excitement has made us impatient with home, and the fireside and domestic shrines have in large measure lost their attraction. We are no longer satisfied with the novel, with the song or with the play, that used to delight our forefathers; nothing so simple and innocent would now content us. Even our religion has suffered a change. The stern morality and unbending creeds of other days have become pliant and yielding, while compromise and emasculated beliefs have taken their place. The old doctrines familiar to the by-gone pulpit now offend us, though we are not particular if the preacher resorts to irreverence and slang, on the contrary, we rather encourage him in this propensity. With tastes and cravings so destructive to the spiritual life, what wonder that simple joys and quiet domestic pleasures have in the social world lost much of their charm? Yet "the common people," - as the phrase goes, - the men and women who are doing the every-day work of this toiling world, stand more than ever in need of rest and quiet, and the kindly solacement of happy fireside intercourse. Poems and Songs by Alexander Rodger Pdf

Excerpt from Poems and Songs: Humorous, Serious, and Satirical Four years ago, on the occasion of the mid-centenary of his fame - and urged to the work besides by an ia borne conviction that the numerous admirers of his lyrical genius, at home and abroad, would welcome the publication - I prepared awl issued a comprehensive selection of the widely popular Poems and Songs of alexander rodger, the Glasgow Radical Post. All that he wrote and left behind him in printed form was not gathered into the pages of that work but nothing was left out which the editor and publisher could per suade themselves might be desired by the public, or the omission of which was likely to injure the reputa tion of the author. The long and unequal narrative poem of Peter Cornclips was omitted. Some of the Poet's satires were not included - such as are absent from this larger edition also - because, referring as they do to persons and events of more than fifty years ago, their point is either no longer apparent, or their motive has ceased to be interesting. But the worthy, the witty, and the wise - they were all there, to the honour and renown of their creator. Songs in Exile, and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by Herbert Edwin Clarke Pdf

Excerpt from Songs in Exile, and Other Poems I know that all beneath the moon decays, And what by mortals in this world is brought In Time's great periods shall return to nought; That fairest states have fatal nights and days. I know that all the Muses' heavenly lays, With toil of sprite which are so dearly bought, As idle sounds, of few or none are sought; That there is nothing lighter than vain praise. I know frail Beauty's like the purple flower, To which one morn oft birth and death affords; That Love a jarring is of minds' accords, Where sense and will bring under reason's power: Know what I list, this all can not me move, But that, alas, I both must write and love. Illustrated Home Book of Poetry and Song by Thomas W. Handford Pdf

Excerpt from Illustrated Home Book of Poetry and Song: Comprising Choice Selections From the Poets of All Lands and Ages It is a difficult thing to define poetry; some things are so great, so beautiful, so comprehensive, that they outrun all the limits of possible definition. Our scales are not large enough to weigh the high mountains; our balances are too small for the everlasting hills. Any definition 'of poetry that regarded it as the expression of sentiment only, would be both misleading and incomplete. The greatest and deepest truths of the ages have fallen from the lips of poets, from the days of Job to the poets of these later years. The gravest and the sweetest lessons of life have come to us robed in poetic garments; the gladdest messages of hope, and the saddest requiems of despair, have alike been swept from the poet's harp. Excerpt from Songs of America: And Other Poems Songs of America The New World's Queen Swift to the Queen, St. Angel came - Resolute, fearless, his heart aflame; Swift to the Queen, by Granada's gate, Lest tidings should fall too late, too late: "Columbus is parting for France! alas, If he and his wondrous purpose pass From Spain for ever! for sure am I He will sail and find where the Indies lie; And long as the land or the sea endures, And gain to the Church or realms unknown Will all, alas! to the winds be thrown! Oh, Sovereign Lady! call him back As north he speeds on his cheerless track, For, over the vast, mysterious seas, Glory will sail with the Genoese!" Russian Music at Home and Abroad by Richard Taruskin Pdf

This new collection views Russian music through the Greek triad of “the Good, the True, and the Beautiful” to investigate how the idea of "nation" embeds itself in the public discourse about music and other arts with results at times invigorating, at times corrupting. In our divided, post–Cold War, and now post–9/11 world, Russian music, formerly a quiet corner on the margins of musicology, has become a site of noisy contention. Richard Taruskin assesses the political and cultural stakes that attach to it in the era of Pussy Riot and renewed international tensions, before turning to individual cases from the nineteenth century to the present. Much of the volume is devoted to the resolutely cosmopolitan but inveterately Russian Igor Stravinsky, one of the major forces in the music of the twentieth century and subject of particular interest to composers and music theorists all over the world. Taruskin here revisits him for the first time since the 1990s, when everything changed for Russia and its cultural products. Other essays are devoted to the cultural and social policies of the Soviet Union and their effect on the music produced there as those policies swung away from Communist internationalism to traditional Russian nationalism; to the musicians of the Russian postrevolutionary diaspora; and to the tension between the compelling artistic quality of works such as Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps or Prokofieff’s Zdravitsa and the antihumanistic or totalitarian messages they convey. Russian Music at Home and Abroad addresses these concerns in a personal and critical way, characteristically demonstrating Taruskin’s authority and ability to bring living history out of the shadows.
