Poems, Local, Lyric and Miscellaneous (Classic Reprint) by James S. Macculloch Pdf

Excerpt from Poems, Local, Lyric and Miscellaneous To him whose tuneful high-aspiring muse Invoked the fortunes of our Royal Bruce; In lofty strains who taught his harp to ring With Scotland's sorrows, and her Hero King: How freedom groan'd in Albyn's humbled land Beneath a crafty tyrant's ruthless hand, Bending her nerveless neck to vaunting power, While fraud and carnage ruled the fatal hour; And how her patriot sons indignant rose In martial phalanx 'gainst her haughty foes. In grim array their serried ranks withstood. And dyed the russet heath with Southron blood, Or glorious fell, and, with their parting breath, Shouted their slogan - "Victory or Death!" How he, the Hero of a hundred songs - The stern-avenger of his country's wrongs - Though baffled oft, yet, ever unsubdued, With martial skill the varying war pursued, Till laurel'd victory burst the enthralling coil, And smiling freedom blessed his native soil: To him my muse her rustic tribute pays, To him I dedicate my humble lays. The Middle English Lyric and Short Poem by Rosemary Greentree Pdf

This Bibliography assembles annotation of collections and criticism of lyrics of religious and secular love, carols and songs, and rhymes of everyday life. The Middle English lyrics and short poems form a varied group that ranges over most aspects of life to include lyrics of religious and secular love, carols and songs, and mundane rhymes of everyday life. Thus there are expressionsof devotion, ethereal or earthly, theological expositions, and knowledge needed for life. The poems are disparate and generally anonymous, and their survival owes much to chance. The bibliography assembles neutral annotation of collections and criticism of the works, arranged chronologically to show the course of criticism and the growing appreciation of these poems and all they can tell us. The introduction considers these matters, problems of definitionof the genre, and the isolable lyrics, and seeks to reconcile some first impressions of the poems, as disparate and slight, with the rewards of close study. ROSEMARY GREENTREE is currently Visiting Research Fellow, Dept of English, University of Adelaide.

Lyric Shame by Gillian White Pdf

Gillian White argues that the poetry wars among critics and practitioners are shaped by “lyric shame”—an unspoken but pervasive embarrassment over what poetry is, should be, and fails to be. “Lyric” is less a specific genre than a way to project subjectivity onto poems—an idealized poem that is nowhere and yet everywhere.

The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart by Kristen Mossler Figg Pdf

Originally published in 1994, The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart is a meticulous reading of the important but generally neglected short lyric poems of Jean Froissart. The book situates Froissart within the cultural and literary context of fourteenth-century Europe and examines a representative number of his lyric forms (pastourelles, chansons royales, ballades, virelais, and rondeaux) demonstrating their richness of theme and poetic virtuosity. The book provides a readable and reliable English translation, making it possible for English scholars unfamiliar with the original Middle French forms to understand and appreciate the influence Froissart had on Chaucer and other authors of the age. The book focuses on themes, techniques, meters, and rhythms that Froissart employed in his poetry, on how his poetry fits poetic tradition, and on the place of Froissart in literary history.

Christian and Lyric Tradition in Victorian Women’s Poetry by F. Elizabeth Gray Pdf

Women in the Victorian period were acknowledged to be the "religious sex," but their relationship to the doctrines, practices, and hierarchies of Christianity was both highly circumscribed, which has been well documented, and complexly creative, which has not. Gray visits the importance of the literature of Christian devotion to women's creative lives through an examination of the varied ways in which Victorian women reproduced and recreated traditional Christian texts in their own poetic texts. Investigating how women poets redeployed the discourse of Christianity to uncover the multiple voices of the scriptures, to expand identity and gender constructions, and to question traditional narratives and processes of authorization, Gray contends that women found in religious poetry unexpected, liberating possibilities. Taking into account multiple voices, from the best-known female poets of the day to some of the most obscure, this study provides a comprehensive account of Victorian women's religious poetic creativity, and argues that this body of work helped shape the development of the lyric in the Victorian period.
