Poetic Resurrection by Sina A. Nitzsche Pdf

While many Americans dismissed the borough of The Bronx in the late 1970s through the belief that »The Bronx is burning,« this study challenges that assumption. As the first explicit study on The Bronx in American popular culture, this book shows how a wide variety of cultural representations engaged in a complex dialogue on its past, present, and future. Sina A. Nitzsche argues that popular culture ushered in the poetic resurrection of The Bronx, an artistic and imaginative rebirth, that preceded, promoted, and facilitated the spatial revival of the borough.

Religious Individualisation by Martin Fuchs,Antje Linkenbach,Martin Mulsow,Bernd-Christian Otto,Rahul Bjørn Parson,Jörg Rüpke Pdf

This volume brings together key findings of the long-term research project ‘Religious Individualisation in Historical Perspective’ (Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University). Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios. Furthermore, the volume challenges prevalent views that regard religions primarily as collective phenomena and provides nuanced perspectives on the appropriation of religious agency, the pluralisation of religious options, dynamics of de-traditionalisation and privatisation, the development of elaborated notions of the self, the facilitation of religious deviance, and on the notion of dividuality.

The Resurrection Trade by Leslie Adrienne Miller Pdf

Poet Leslie Adrienne Miller's brilliant and provocative exploration of anatomical texts and historical assumptions about the body Whoever they were, they're still with us, posing demurely in suits of blood and muscle, the bruised shadows of what skin they do have . . . —from "Gautier d'Agoty's Écorchés" "The resurrection trade," the business of trafficking in corpses, is an old trade, one that makes possible the art of anatomy and, as poet Leslie Adrienne Miller discovers, the art of her own book. Miller delves into the mysteries of early anatomical studies and medical illustrations and finds there stories of women's lives—sometimes tragic, sometimes comic—as exposed as the drawings themselves. These meticulously researched and rendered poems become powerful testimonies to women's bodies objectified and misunderstood throughout history. Miller's sensuous and harrowing fifth collection brings a new truth to what she calls "the strange collusion of imaginary science and real art."

Poetic Resurrection by Rafael Manzo Pdf

Poetic Resurrection is me throwing caution to the wind and not caring if I'm rejected, considered crazy or thought of as losing it. In order for me to truly express all of me; the informal and formal will intertwine. By now, people are aware I write about my pain, loss, heartbreak, dreams, hopes and life experiences(both negative and positive); I've kept the darker, raw, repressed and impulsive sides of me hidden...until now.

The Mystic Mountain by Dunstan Massey Pdf

Using imagery from fields as far apart as the Gospels, classic mythology, and modern astrophysics, in his book The Mystic Mountain, Dunstan Massey explores what some might call the chimerical hope of a risen life. Nevertheless, one is allowed to ask, will the Mourner, bereaved by the sudden death of Miriam, his wife, and his young son Jonathan, ever know consolation for their loss, or even see them again? In his desolation edging on despair, the Mourner is accompanied by three mysterious voices. He asks them at the sill of the grave, "Shall they rise, these dead?" As if in reply, the consolers lead him on a long visual search for the transcendent answer: will it be here, where death's inevitability and finality have shattered his hopes? Or, could it be beyond death? The cry, the craving of the human heart, will never rest, save in a deathless state of infinite joy. We strive for it here, but find it not. Only the Infinite One who chose to die for love can give it when he calls us--so come as I call thee, my sister and brother and mother, unto me.

Myth and Gospel in the Fiction of John Updike by John McTavish Pdf

Big on style, slight on substance: that has been a common charge over the years by critics of John Updike. In fact, however, John Updike is one of the most serious writers of modern times. Myth, as this book shows, unlocks his fictional universe and repeatedly breaks open the powerful themes in his literary parables of the gospel. Myth and Gospel in the Fiction of John Updike also includes a personal tribute to John Updike by his son David, two essays by pioneer Updike scholars Alice and Kenneth Hamilton, and an anecdotal chapter in which readers share Updike discoveries and recommendations. All in all, weight is added to the complaint that the master of myth and gospel was shortchanged by the Nobel committee.

The World is Charged by Daniel Westover,William Wright Pdf

The discovery of Gerard Manley Hopkins's poetry in the twentieth century was a revelation for postwar poets, who discovered in both Hopkins's style and subject matter a voice seemingly bottled for their own time. This influence has not faded in the twenty-first century; in fact, it has grown all the more pervasive as poets from many backgrounds and nations have found, in the voice of this nineteenth-century Jesuit, a revolutionary way of addressing contemporary concerns relating to human imagination, ecology, green ethics, the role of art, and individual spirituality. The poets collected in The World Is Charged: Poetic Engagements with Gerard Manley Hopkins engage with Hopkins in diverse ways. Some mention Hopkins or address some aspect of his life. Others channel his innovative poetics or address important Hopkinsian themes. All demonstrate the centrality of his influence in contemporary poetry. Unfortunately, critics have mostly neglected the importance of Hopkins as a contemporary model, instead pinning his influence to the early twentieth century. In a climate where high modernism, Whitmanic free verse, and the confessional lyric are often held up as contemporary poetry's dominant forerunners, this book proposes a more complex genealogy, tracing back to Hopkins and his influential early admirers current strands of emotional and spiritual openness, pleasure in word play and sonic textures, and veneration of the dynamic material world. \

Resurrection by Nicole Cooley Pdf

Frida Kahlo, Helen Keller, Diane Arbus, Alice Liddell, Patty Hearst, Snow White, Thumbelina—real and imaginary women transfigured by suffering—speak in Nicole Cooley’s Resurrection, winner of the 1995 Walt Whitman Award. As Cooley explores the bonds between sisters, mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, this important book follows a chorus of women’s voices along a hallucinatory nexus of terror. These are the voices of the martyred, the imprisoned, the exiled, the silenced, the forgotten, and as they shift from east-ern Europe to Cambodia to New Orleans, it becomes agonizingly clear that our world with its ritualized misogyny is a dangerous place for women. “Patty Hearst: A Love Poem,” addressed to the sister who wasn’t kidnapped, compares the inexorable winnowing away of personality through terror, brutality, and violation with its counterpart-the charade of “normal” family life. With a vivid lexicon of religious imagery—guilt, punishment, baptism, crucifixion, and, of course, resurrection—Cooley unflinchingly casts in lines of crystalline limpidity the voices of all women who through violence or fear were denied childhood. Over all of them floats the reassuring specter of Rose, a Hungarian matriarch, voice of guidance, of communal wisdom, of warning. Resurrection is an eloquent rendering of extreme psychological states—a disturbing invocation of rage, tenderness, solidarity, and ultimately of hope.

Resurrection in the Cartoon by Robert Priest Pdf

Grounded in twentieth-century pop iconography, this book delivers all the passion, satire, and engaging wit that's become the author's trademark. Individually, these qualities mark every poem as socially and politically relevant. As a collection, the poems take on everything from Elvis and the Three Stooges to the current right wing political agenda. Relentless in its assessment of contemporary culture, the mordant irony, brutal honesty, and remarkable sensitivity of Priest's surreal prose poems, lush lyrics, confessions, psalms, slams, songs, sayings, and parables creates a poetic crucible in which the Canadian "melting-pot' is purified of its hypocrisies and reclaimed, ultimately, in the joy of language.

Beowulf and Other Stories by Joe Allard,Richard North Pdf

Beowulf & Other Stories was first conceived in the belief that the study of Old English – and its close cousins, Old Icelandic and Anglo-Norman – can be a genuine delight, covering a period as replete with wonder, creativity and magic as any other in literature. Now in a fully revised second edition, the collection of essays written by leading academics in the field is set to build upon its established reputation as the standard introduction to the literatures of the time. Beowulf & Other Stories captures the fire and bloodlust of the great epic, Beowulf, and the sophistication and eroticism of the Exeter Riddles. Fresh interpretations give new life to the spiritual ecstasy of The Seafarer and to the imaginative dexterity of The Dream of the Rood, andprovide the student and general reader with all they might need to explore and enjoy this complex but rewarding field. The book sheds light, too, on the shadowy contexts of the period, with suggestive and highly readable essays on matters ranging from the dynamism of the Viking Age to Anglo-Saxon input into The Lord of the Rings, from the great religious prose works to the transition from Old to Middle English. It also branches out into related traditions, with expert introductions to the Icelandic Sagas, Viking Religion and Norse Mythology. Peter S. Baker provides an outstanding guide to taking your first steps in the Old English language, while David Crystal provides a crisp linguistic overview of the entire period. With a new chapter by Mike Bintley on Anglo-Saxon archaeology and a revised chapter by Stewart Brookes on the prose writers of the English Benedictine Reform, this updated second edition will be essential reading for students of the period.
