The Art of Biblical Poetry by Robert Alter Pdf

Three decades ago, renowned literary expert Robert Alter radically expanded the horizons of biblical scholarship by recasting the Bible as not only a human creation but a work of literary art deserving studied criticism. In The Art of Biblical Poetry, his companion to the seminal The Art of Biblical Narrative, Alter takes his analysis beyond narrative craft to investigate the use of Hebrew poetry in the Bible. Updated with a new preface, myriad revisions, and passages from Alter's own critically acclaimed biblical translations, The Art of Biblical Poetry is an indispensable tool for understanding the Bible and its poetry.

Poetry Inspired by the Bible by Wanda L. Gauthney Pdf

Like most people in the world, 2020 finds me in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Inspired by the Word of God and how God has something to say about every situation, I began to write seventy-five poems. It was February when the Holy Spirit prompted me to write God's Word in poetry, and needless to say, 2020 did not find me with nothing to do while in the house, wanting to follow the rules. I have been saved, born again, for thirty-two years. I am a native-born Philadelphian and attend the Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. I love serving the Lord and serving people (i.e. Helping Hand Rescue Mission, women in prison, ushering, and more). My life verse is Matthew 5:16: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." While reading the first five verses in Joel 1, Wanda began to write. Nothing like This Has Ever Happened Before God gave a message to the prophet to say "listen," everyone See what's happening all around while you are still having fun It came upon the land quickly with a mighty and destructive force Tell your children, everyone, everywhere has been thrown off course Not in our time or your parent's time have we ever seen this before We ask when will it end, how long can it go on each day more and more Everyone, wake up including those who partied too hard and went to sleep Cry out and mourn, like it or not, you're on the wagon, now it is time to weep The virus will attack you no matter who you are, red, brown, black, or white Take heed and realize the seriousness of the situation, we can't win this fight All are closed, restaurants, gyms, malls, nail salons, barber shops, no relief And with virtual doctor's appointments, we pray nothing happens to our teeth We must seek to sense God's purpose for what is happening in the world today Only the Holy Spirit can help us to know what we should do before it all slips away

The Book of Love Towards God by Reverend Claiborne Brown Jr Pdf

One day, while watching a television show that featured the Rapper DMX, Reverend Claiborne Brown heard him quote a poem: "These are hands of a man that steals; these are hands of a man that kills; these are the hands of a man that does; now fold them, the hands of a man that was." The poem DMX quoted revealed how he lived his life on the streets, but Reverend Brown prayed and asked the Lord to bless him with a poem that would bless the world. And so the Lord blessed him with a poem called "Second Chance Prayer" Lord, as I kneel down to pray; I asked the Lord today, To give me a second chance to make it all the way. I know I have lied, and spoke many untruths, But, Lord give me a second chance to make it up to you. The Book of Love towards God presents a series of poems by Rev. Brown inspired by the Bible, intended to enlighten and uplift with the Holy Spirit's divine power.

Through the Bible with Poetry by Michael Beatty Pdf

What I am attempting to do with this volume is to make the younger generation, and anyone else that has a desire, aware of some of the more prominent parts of the bible. I have accomplished this by picking out certain highlights from each book of the bible, and composing a poem about them. At the end of each poem, I have also included the scripture source for it. Poets of the Bible: From Solomon's Song of Songs to John's Revelation by Anonim Pdf

“The vividness and beauty of the language emerge in a fresh way . . . with evocative simplicity.” —Robert Alter, professor emeritus of Hebrew and comparative literature, University of California, Berkeley The world’s greatest poetry resides in the Bible, yet these major poets are traditionally rendered into prose. In this pioneering volume of biblical poets translated in English, Willis Barnstone restores the lyricism and power of the poets’ voices in both the New and Old Testaments. In the Hebrew Bible we hear Solomon rhapsodize in Song of Songs, David chant in Psalms, God and Job debate in grand rhetoric, and prophet poet Isaiah plead for peace. Jesus speaks in wisdom verse in the Gospel, Paul is a philosopher of love, and John of Patmos roars majestically in Revelation, the Bible’s epic poem. This groundbreaking volume includes every major biblical poem from Genesis and Adam and Eve in the Garden to the last pages of Alpha and Omega in Paradise.

The Great Poems of the Bible by James L. Kugel Pdf

From the Psalms to the Prophets, from job to Ecclesiastes, much of the Bible is written in poetry. The poems of the Bible include some of its best known and most beloved passages: "The Lord is my shepherd," "Let justice roll down like waters," "By the rivers of Babylon," "Remember your Creator," "Arise, shine, for thy light is come!" These poems live in the hearts of those who are familiar with the Bible and offer rich rewards to anyone who is approaching the world's greatest book for the first time. In The Great Poems of the Bible, Harvard scholar James Kugel presents original translations of the most beautiful and important poems of the Scripture. Taken together, these poems represent the very essence of the Hebrew Bible. Reading them one after another is like taking a guided tour through Scripture, meeting firsthand some of its most important teachings and opening the way to an understanding of the Bible as a whole. Each poem is accompanied by an eloquent and accessible explanation of the poem's language, and a reflection on its meaning. These learned, compact essays introduce readers to the broader spiritual world of ancient Israel. What did people in biblical times believe about God? Where is a person's soul located and what does it do? Is there an afterlife? How does one come to "know" God? Why wasn't Eve meant to be Adam's "helpmate" (Kugel shows how this was just a translator's slip-up), and what does the Bible have to say about the role of women? Kugel's sparkling translations of the poems, together with the fascinating insights that accompany them, distill the very best that the Bible and modern scholarship have to offer. Kugel brings new life to some of history's greatest poems, and offers a new look at a Bible we thought we already knew. Here, in one volume, is a "Bible's bible" that belongs in every home.

The Spirit Made Me Do It by Donald T. Williams Pdf

The Spirit Made Me Do It Difficult life lessons learned the hard way made simpler via God's way Would have, could have, should have were all I could come up with after I finally got around to reading the Bible midway through my fifty-eighth year of life. Being a retired English teacher, I have read my share of fine novels, short stories, plays, poems and letters over the years, each with its premise, lesson or moral. But the Bible, the most important literary work of all. I had deliberately avoided. I reasoned that "not knowing" would somehow diminish my accountability for the flaws of my imperfect existence. Ignorance was almost bliss for a while. This cop out was working just fine for me until life threw me a succession of 140 mph fast and curve balls. I got beamed something fierce, but it knocked some much needed sense into me. Yes, there was a weighty price for my knowledgeable ignorance, but I believe I know that I'm better for it. So, look at me now....spreading the "good news" in the only humble way I know how. Who would have ever thought? The Holy Spirit? Only God knows. I do hope that you enjoy reading these verses and consider them heaven sent as I certainly do. It's the only way I can account for something or someone, God Almighty. The Spirit Made Me Do It.

American Radiance by Luisa Muradyan Pdf

Winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry, American Radiance, at turns funny, tragic, and haunting, reflects on the author's experience immigrating as a child to the United States from Ukraine in 1991. What does it mean to be an American? Luisa Muradyan doesn't try to provide an answer. Instead, the poems in American Radiance look for a home in history, folklore, misery, laughter, language, and Prince's outstretched hand. Colliding with the grand figures of late '80s and early '90s pop culture, Muradyan's imagination pushes the reader forward, confronting the painful loss of identity that assimilation brings.

God, Fire and Truth: by Diann Ross Woodbury Pdf

GOD, FIRE AND TRUTH “A POETIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE ” This is a book about the bible written all in poetry. Each and every book of the Bible is in this book with a few of my own poems not based upon the book that I read to get the major poems about the most important parts of the Bible. If you like the Psalms but find the other parts of the Bible a bit confusing, then this is a book that will help you understand the Bible better. We have a loving, but just God. You wouldn’t let your child run wild in the traffic of the streets would you? Well God sets down rules so that we can be safe and get through this sometimes hard world. He does it because He loves us! I hope this book will give you hours of enjoyment. I know I learned a lot from writing it that I did not know from reading the actual Bible. Nothing can surpass the actual Bible, but for some, you may find this book to be rather fun. The poems were written from reading a small book about the most important parts of each book of the Bible. God bless you, Diann Ross Woodbury
