PTSD Road to Recovery by Brett Calman Pdf

In 2006, when I was dispatched to a massive house fire, I had no idea that my life was about to change forever. Prior to that call, I thought of myself as another "tough guy" police officer and nothing fazed me. That night began a journey that would threaten everything I loved most - my family, my career, my life. Fourteen years after that initial call, I can confidently say that this is a story of hope. But getting here was the hardest thing I have ever done. I fought for myself, and I survived. Today, I am well on the road to recovery. In these pages, I chronicle my journey with PTSD and share candid details about my symptoms, my experiences with therapy, my setbacks, and the ultimate test of my recovery. Telling my story was an important part of my therapy, but that's not why I have chosen to write this book. Too many men and women in policing - and in other emergency services - don't get the help they need. If you or someone you know is suffering, this book will give you hope, guidance, and confidence that you are not alone. I hope it serves as a step on your road to recovery.

Mediating Citizen Complaints Against Police Officers by Samuel Walker Pdf

This report provides guidance in helping police and community leaders develop successful mediation programs for addressing citizen complaints against police officers. The first chapter defines mediation as "the informal resolution of a complaint or dispute between two parties through a face-to-face meeting in which a professional mediator serves as a neutral facilitator and where both parties ultimately agree that an acceptable resolution has been reached." The goals of mediation are to achieve understanding of the issues involved in the complaint, solve any problems associated with the complaint, and achieve reconciliation between the parties. The second chapter outlines the potential benefits of mediation for police officers, citizen complainants, police accountability, community policing, the complaint process, and the criminal justice system. The third chapter discusses the key issues in developing a mediation program for citizen complaints against police. Among the issues addressed are voluntary participation, case eligibility, the mediation of racial and ethnic-related complaints, the mediation of complaints by women, potential language and cultural barriers, case screening, police discipline and accountability, and getting both sides to the table. Other issues addressed pertain to the mediation session itself and the enforcement of agreements. Chapter four presents results from a survey of existing citizen complaint mediation programs. The concluding chapter describes a model for a successful mediation program for citizen complaints against police. 100 references.

Police in Schools by Linda Duxbury,Craig Bennell Pdf

"This co-authored book critically reviews existing literature on school resource officer (SRO) programs and presents a thorough evaluation of an SRO program offered by Peel Regional Police in Ontario, Canada. The implementation of a school resource officer (SRO) program is a controversial response to school violence and safety issues. While some call for an increased use of police in schools, others are pushing to remove police from schools, or at least to end their involvement in routine discipline. Though many SRO programs exist around the world, little systematic research has been conducted on the topic. The study reported in this book represents the largest and most comprehensive assessment of such programs to date. The research by Duxbury and Bennell indicates that SRO programs can provide real value for students, school staff, policing organizations, and society, but benefits rely on having programs that are well-designed, that the right officers are selected for SRO roles, and that the initiative has support from major stakeholders. Given the current conversations regarding the costs and benefits of having police officers in schools, there is a clear need to determine the value that investment in these types of proactive policing programs creates. The book provides researchers, SROs, police agencies, school boards, school administrators, teachers, parents, and students with information about: the activities that SROs are involved in, how SROs can collaborate with schools to create safe learning environments, and whether (and how) such programs benefit the police, schools, students, and society. Easy-to-digest charts facilitate understanding, and anonymized reflections from SROs, school staff, and students are presented throughout the book to provide context"--
