The European volume 5 of the series Constitutions of the World covers Poland. Besides the May 3rd Constitution of 1791, Europe s first modern constitution, it contains constitutional texts and drafts from the Napoleonic epoch and the time during which Poland did not exist as a sovereign state. The previously almost unknown documents include those of Galicia (Magna Charta / Charta Leopoldina of 1790) and the Lemberg Petitions of 1848. The 21 documents are edited in the original languages (Polish, German, French et al.) with annotations and an index."

Polish Constitutional Documents 1790-1848 by Anna Tarnowska Pdf

This volume of the edition presents exceptional documents from the early period of European constitutionalism with the constitution of May 3rd, 1971 from the closing phase of the Polish Aristocratic Republic, and the Grodno constitution of 1793. It incorporates the constitutional texts of the Napoleonic epoch, such as those concerning the duchy of Warsaw of 1807 and of the period in which Poland ceased to exist as a sovereign state (the so-called Constitution of 1815, the 1825 amendment, and the "organic statute" of 1832). Among the most interesting and hitherto almost unknown constitutional projects of Galicia, which belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy following the partition of Poland in 1772, are the Magna Charta / Charta Leopoldina (1790) and two versions of the Lemberg Petition (1848). Documents pertaining to constitutions of the Free City of Krakow, also known as the Republic of Krakow, (including constitutions from 1815, 1818 and 1833 with amendments) have also been edited. In keeping with the publication series' editing principles, this volume contains a total of 21 documents in all the original languages in which they were published at the time, including Polish, French, German, Latin, Russian and old Ukrainian. The texts have been edited and annotated by the law historian, Anna Tarnowska, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Torun.

The volume is enriched by hundreds of contemporary engravings, maps, and other illustrations.

Napoleonic Divorce Law in Poland (1808-1852) by Piotr Z. Pomianowski Pdf

In 1807 Napoleon Bonaparte created the Duchy of Warsaw from the Polish lands that had been ceded to France by Prussia. His Civil Code was enforced in the new Duchy too and, unlike the Catholic Church, it allowed the dissolution of marriage by divorce. This book sheds new light on the application of Napoleonic divorce regulations in the Polish lands between 1808-1852. Unlike what has been argued so far, this book demonstrates that divorces were happening frequently in 19th century Poland and even with the same rate as in France. In addition to the analysis of the Napoleonic divorce law, the reader is provided with a fully comprehensive description of parties as well as courts and officials involved in divorce proceedings, their course and the grounds for divorce.

Politics and the Slavic Languages by Tomasz Kamusella Pdf

During the last two centuries, ethnolinguistic nationalism has been the norm of nation building and state building in Central Europe. The number of recognized Slavic languages (in line with the normative political formula of language = nation = state) gradually tallied with the number of the Slavic nation-states, especially after the breakups of Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. But in the current age of borderless cyberspace, regional and minority Slavic languages are freely standardized and used, even when state authorities disapprove. As a result, since the turn of the 19th century, the number of Slavic languages has varied widely, from a single Slavic language to as many as 40. Through the story of Slavic languages, this timely book illustrates that decisions on what counts as a language are neither permanent nor stable, arguing that the politics of language is the politics in Central Europe. The monograph will prove to be an essential resource for scholars of linguistics and politics in Central Europe.

The Concept of Constitution in the History of Political Thought by Arkadiusz Górnisiewicz,Bogdan Szlachta Pdf

The aim of the present volume is to discuss the notion of constitution from the perspectives of history of political thought. Its scholarly intention is to go beyond the approach concentrating on the formal understanding of constitution and bring forward more complex historical and philosophic-political interpretations. Our point of departure was the need to revive the somehow neglected distinction between the idea of constitution as an act of conscious law-giving activity and the notion of constitution conceived as the set of fundamental political rules derived from the very nature of political regime and its historical development.

Europe in the Nineteenth Century by Harry Hearder Pdf

The period between 1830 and 1880 was one of immense activity, radical political change, and striking economic and social growth in Europe. The major themes of the struggles between individuals, parties and classes within the state, and between the states themselves are explored within the context of a study of the administration, organisation and growth of European society. The whole book has been fully revised and updated, particularly the section on German history. Professor Hearder has also given greater consideration to many important issues, such as, popular movements of protest and insurrection, life-styles, and the role of women.
