Governance and Politics of the Netherlands by Rudy B. Andeweg,Galen A. Irwin,Tom Louwerse Pdf

The new fifth edition of this leading textbook provides a clear and comprehensive account of governance and politics in the Netherlands. The book has been revised throughout to provide full coverage of recent developments and events, including the latest proposals for constitutional reform. The Netherlands has often been characterized as a place of political calm, with a culture of cooperation and compromise in dealing with key political issues. Now, at a time when climate change and immigration are high on the political agenda, the electorate is growing ever more unpredictable and political fragmentation makes forming majority coalitions increasingly difficult, it is vital to question how the Dutch system will continue to achieve consensus. With this in mind, the authors take a comparative and analytical approach as they examine the features of the country's political system that have long made it a subject of study for political scientists. Governance and Politics of the Netherlands provides both students and scholars with a complete and reliable introduction to a country whose small size belies its importance in comparative political analysis. New to this Edition: - Fully revised and updated throughout to reflect the latest developments, events and issues. - Cites the most recent data sources (e.g. national election study and parliamentary study). - Discusses latest proposals for constitutional reform.

The Economy and Politics of the Netherlands Since 1945 by Richard Griffiths Pdf

There is relatively little information on The Netherlands written in the English language which is easily accessible to social science students and even less which is systematically assembled between the covers of a single book. This is unfortunate not only because The Netherlands is an important part of Western Europe but because the experience of The Netherlands in the way in which it has attempted to resolve the economic and political problems confronting it may help to shed valuable light on similar issues facing other European countries. The contributions for this volume were chosen with these considerations in mind. On the one hand the selection of topics was intended to provide an overall impression of the political and economic development of The Netherlands since the Second World War. Thus separate chapters are devoted to an examination of economic develop ment; counter-inflation, energy, regional and planning policies; pressure groups, electoral performance, cabinet formation and colonial and Euro pean policies. On the other hand, these areas for investigation were chosen to invite specific contrast with the experience of other European nations or to illustrate certain problems of political or economic theory. It is my pleasure to thank, first of all, the contributors themselves for the conscientious way in which they prepared their drafts which made my task as editor so much easier. Secondly, it will be apparent to even the most casual observer that I have contributed two chapters.

Governance and Politics of the Netherlands, Second Edition by Rudy B. Andeweg,Galen A. Irwin Pdf

The assassination of Pim Fortuyn and his party's dramatic gains in the May 2002 general election made Dutch politics front page news around the world. The collapse of the party he founded, however, was as rapid as its rise, leading to equally dramatic changes in 2003. This revised and updated new edition of the leading text looks behind the headlines to provide a comprehensive introduction to governance and politics in the Netherlands. The authors explore the causes, impact and advantages and disadvantages of the quest for consensus, which remains its most striking characteristic, and provide full coverage of recent developments and events.

Rediscovering Europe in the Netherlands by Anonim Pdf

In 2005, the Dutch referendum on whether to ratify the treaty establishing a European constitution dramatically exposed the rift between political and public opinion in European policymaking. Additionally, the referendum demonstrated that politicians had failed to function as adequate links between Europe as an entity and its Dutch citizens. Against this turbulent background, the authors analyze the European Union’s relative lack of legitimacy in the Netherlands and advise how its image might earn more popular appeal by going beyond traditional institutional approaches.

The Power of Populism by Koen Vossen Pdf

This book discusses the Party for Freedom (PVV), a political party in the Netherlands, founded and led by Geert Wilders. Attaining between 10 and 18% of the votes, the PVV has become one of the largest parties in the Netherlands and is the only political party worldwide without members. Between 2010 and 2012 the party supported a minority coalition of liberals and christian-democrats in exchange for influence on governmental policy. The PVV can be viewed as the Dutch version of an ideological family of nationalist parties linked by their opposition to immigration and to the political and cultural elites. Within this family, Geert Wilders has played an important role as pioneer of a new master frame, in which Islam is portrayed as the historical arch-enemy of the West. As the main figurehead of European islamophobia, Wilders has inspired political parties and organizations in Europe, North-America, Israel and even Australia. Examining data collected on various aspects of the party (for example, voters, activists, organization and ideology) and employing theoretical insights from sociology, electoral geography and political science, this book analyses this controversial phenomenon and seeks to obtain a clearer picture of the functioning of the PVV. This book will be of interest to students and scholars interested in European politics and current affairs more generally.

Governing from the Centre by Ken Gladdish Pdf

This account of the Dutch system is placed in context with an introduction to the history of the Dutch polity between the 16th and 19th centuries. It looks at the practice of liberal constitutionalism, confessionalism and socialism in modern times. Post-war political history is studied in more detail; then parties and leaders, and the workings of representation, parliament, cabinet government and public management are separately considered.
