Poncelet's Theorem by Leopold Flatto Pdf

"Poncelet's theorem is a famous result in algebraic geometry, dating to the early part of the nineteenth century. It concerns closed polygons inscribed in one conic and circumscribed about another. The theorem is of great depth in that it relates to a large and diverse body of mathematics. There are several proofs of the theorem, none of which is elementary. A particularly attractive feature of the theorem, which is easily understood but difficult to prove, is that it serves as a prism through which one can learn and appreciate a lot of beautiful mathematics." "The author's original research in queuing theory and dynamical systems figures prominently in the book. This book stresses the modern approach to the subject and contains much material not previously available in book form. It also discusses the relation between Poncelet's theorem and some aspects of queueing theory and mathematical billiards." "The proof of Poncelet's theorem presented in this book relates it to the theory of elliptic curves and exploits the fact that such curves are endowed with a group structure. The book also treats the real and degenerate cases of Poncelet's theorem. These cases are interesting in themselves, and their proofs require some other considerations. The real case is handled by employing notions from dynamical systems." "The material in this book should be understandable to anyone who has taken the standard courses in undergraduate mathematics. To achieve this, the author has included in the book preliminary chapters dealing with projective geometry, Riemann surfaces, elliptic functions, and elliptic curves. The book also contains numerous figures illustrating various geometric concepts." --Book Jacket.

Finding Ellipses: What Blaschke Products, Poncelet’s Theorem, and the Numerical Range Know about Each Other by Ulrich Daepp,Pamela Gorkin,Karl Voss Pdf

Mathematicians delight in finding surprising connections between seemingly disparate areas of mathematics. Whole domains of modern mathematics have arisen from exploration of such connections--consider analytic number theory or algebraic topology. Finding Ellipses is a delight-filled romp across a three-way unexpected connection between complex analysis, linear algebra, and projective geometry. The book begins with Blaschke products, complex-analytic functions that are generalizations of disk automorphisms. In the analysis of Blaschke products, we encounter, in a quite natural way, an ellipse inside the unit disk. The story continues by introducing the reader to Poncelet's theorem--a beautiful result in projective geometry that ties together two conics and, in particular, two ellipses, one circumscribed by a polygon that is inscribed in the second. The Blaschke ellipse and the Poncelet ellipse turn out to be the same ellipse, and the connection is illuminated by considering the numerical range of a $2 \times 2$ matrix. The numerical range is a convex subset of the complex plane that contains information about the geometry of the transformation represented by a matrix. Through the numerical range of $n \times n$ matrices, we learn more about the interplay between Poncelet's theorem and Blaschke products. The story ranges widely over analysis, algebra, and geometry, and the exposition of the deep and surprising connections is lucid and compelling. Written for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students, this book would be the perfect vehicle for an invigorating and enlightening capstone exploration. The exercises and collection of extensive projects could be used as an embarkation point for a satisfying and rich research project. Poncelet Porisms and Beyond by Vladimir Dragović,Milena Radnović Pdf

The goal of the book is to present, in a complete and comprehensive way, areas of current research interlacing around the Poncelet porism: dynamics of integrable billiards, algebraic geometry of hyperelliptic Jacobians, and classical projective geometry of pencils of quadrics. The most important results and ideas, classical as well as modern, connected to the Poncelet theorem are presented, together with a historical overview analyzing the classical ideas and their natural generalizations. Special attention is paid to the realization of the Griffiths and Harris programme about Poncelet-type problems and addition theorems. This programme, formulated three decades ago, is aimed to understanding the higher-dimensional analogues of Poncelet problems and the realization of the synthetic approach of higher genus addition theorems.

Complex Analysis and Spectral Theory by H. Garth Dales,Dmitry Khavinson,Javad Mashreghi Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Complex Analysis and Spectral Theory, in celebration of Thomas Ransford's 60th birthday, held from May 21–25, 2018, at Laval University, Québec, Canada. Spectral theory is the branch of mathematics devoted to the study of matrices and their eigenvalues, as well as their infinite-dimensional counterparts, linear operators and their spectra. Spectral theory is ubiquitous in science and engineering because so many physical phenomena, being essentially linear in nature, can be modelled using linear operators. On the other hand, complex analysis is the calculus of functions of a complex variable. They are widely used in mathematics, physics, and in engineering. Both topics are related to numerous other domains in mathematics as well as other branches of science and engineering. The list includes, but is not restricted to, analytical mechanics, physics, astronomy (celestial mechanics), geology (weather modeling), chemistry (reaction rates), biology, population modeling, economics (stock trends, interest rates and the market equilibrium price changes). There are many other connections, and in recent years there has been a tremendous amount of work on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, on the operators acting on them, as well as on applications in physics and engineering, which arise from pure topics like interpolation and sampling. Many of these connections are discussed in articles included in this book.

Function Theory on Symplectic Manifolds by Leonid Polterovich,Daniel Rosen Pdf

This is a book on symplectic topology, a rapidly developing field of mathematics which originated as a geometric tool for problems of classical mechanics. Since the 1980s, powerful methods such as Gromov's pseudo-holomorphic curves and Morse-Floer theory on loop spaces gave rise to the discovery of unexpected symplectic phenomena. The present book focuses on function spaces associated with a symplectic manifold. A number of recent advances show that these spaces exhibit intriguing properties and structures, giving rise to an alternative intuition and new tools in symplectic topology. The book provides an essentially self-contained introduction into these developments along with applications to symplectic topology, algebra and geometry of symplectomorphism groups, Hamiltonian dynamics and quantum mechanics. It will appeal to researchers and students from the graduate level onwards.

Higher Genus Curves in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry by Andreas Malmendier,Tony Shaska Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Higher Genus Curves and Fibrations in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry, held on January 8, 2016, in Seattle, Washington. Algebraic curves and their fibrations have played a major role in both mathematical physics and arithmetic geometry. This volume focuses on the role of higher genus curves; in particular, hyperelliptic and superelliptic curves in algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. The articles in this volume investigate the automorphism groups of curves and superelliptic curves and results regarding integral points on curves and their applications in mirror symmetry. Moreover, geometric subjects are addressed, such as elliptic 3 surfaces over the rationals, the birational type of Hurwitz spaces, and links between projective geometry and abelian functions.

Geometry and Billiards by Serge Tabachnikov Pdf

This book is devoted to billiards in their relation with differential geometry, classical mechanics, and geometrical optics. The book is based on an advanced undergraduate topics course (but contains more material than can be realistically taught in one semester). Although the minimum prerequisites include only the standard material usually covered in the first two years of college (the entire calculus sequence, linear algebra), readers should show some mathematical maturity and strongly rely on their mathematical common sense. As a reward, they will be taken to the forefront of current research.

Computer Vision - ECCV 2002 by Anders Heyden,Gunnar Sparr,Mads Nielsen,Peter Johansen Pdf

Premiering in 1990 in Antibes, France, the European Conference on Computer Vision, ECCV, has been held biennially at venues all around Europe. These conferences have been very successful, making ECCV a major event to the computer vision community. ECCV 2002 was the seventh in the series. The privilege of organizing it was shared by three universities: The IT University of Copenhagen, the University of Copenhagen, and Lund University, with the conference venue in Copenhagen. These universities lie ̈ geographically close in the vivid Oresund region, which lies partly in Denmark and partly in Sweden, with the newly built bridge (opened summer 2000) crossing the sound that formerly divided the countries. We are very happy to report that this year’s conference attracted more papers than ever before, with around 600 submissions. Still, together with the conference board, we decided to keep the tradition of holding ECCV as a single track conference. Each paper was anonymously refereed by three different reviewers. For the nal selection, for the rst time for ECCV, a system with area chairs was used. These met with the program chairsinLundfortwodaysinFebruary2002toselectwhatbecame45oralpresentations and 181 posters. Also at this meeting the selection was made without knowledge of the authors’identity.
