Popular Poetry Of The Baloches - by M. Longworth Dames Pdf

Popular Poetry of the Baloches, was written in 1907 by Mansel Longworth Dames (1850-1922) who was a scholar of oriental and Portuguese language. Mr. Dames passed the Indian Civil Service examination in 1868, and on his arrival in India in 1870 was posted to the Punjab commission, where he served continuously till his retirement in 1897, with an interlude in 1870, during which he was on special duty with the troops during the Second Anglo-Afghan war. Much of his service was passed in the trans-Indus district of Dera Ghazi Khan, where he had opportunities for studying the Baluch people (Baloch) and became an authority on the various dialects of the Baluch and Pashto languages.

Popular Poetry of the Baloches, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by M. Longworth Dames Pdf

Excerpt from Popular Poetry of the Baloches, Vol. 1 My sincerest thanks are due also to the Royal Asiatic Society for its assistance and co-operation, without which it would have been impossible to include a complete collection of the original texts from which the English renderings are made. Without these texts the translations, the value of which depends mainly on the correctness of my interpretations, would have lost much of their value. To both Societies I now express my heartiest thanks for their kindness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Popular Poetry of the Baloches, Vol. 1 Popular Poetry of the Baloches to a conclusion and laying before the Public the result of many years labour in collecting, transcribing and translating the ballads and verses here set forth, I have the greatest pleasure in acknowledging the action of the Folklore Society in issuing this book as the Annual Volume for 1905, and in thanking the Council and the Society for giving me the opportunity of publishing a work of this kind, which necessarily appeals to a limited public. My sincerest thanks are due also to the Royal Asiatic Society for its assistance and co-operation, without which it would have been impossible to include a complete collection of the original texts from which the English renderings are made. Folklore Genres by Dan Ben-Amos Pdf

The essays in Folklore Genres represent development in folklore genre studies, diverging into literary, ethnographic, and taxonomic questions. The study as a whole is concerned with the concept of genre and with the history of genre theory. A selective bibliography provides a guide to analytical and theoretical works on the topic. The literary-oriented articles conceive of folklore forms, not as the antecedents of literary genres, but as complex, symbolically rich expressions. The ethnographically oriented articles, as well as those dealing with classification problems, reveal dimensions of folklore that are often obscured from the student reading the folklore text alone. It has long been known that the written page is but a pale reproduction of the spoken word, that a tale hardly reflects the telling. The essays in this collection lead to an understanding of the forms of oral literature as multidimensional symbols of communication and to an understanding of folklore genres as systematically related conceptual categories in culture. What kinship terms are to social structure, genre terms are to folklore. Since genres constitute recognized modes of folklore speaking, their terminology and taxonomy can play a major role in the study of culture and society. The essays were originally published in Genre (1969–1971); introduction, bibliography, and index have been added to this edition.

Iranian and Minority Languages at Home and in Diaspora by Anousha Sedighi Pdf

While the typology, syntax, and morphology of Iranian languages have been widely explored, the sociolinguistic aspects remain largely understudied. The present companion addresses this essential yet overlooked area of research in two ways: (i) The book explores multilingualism within Iran and its neighbouring countries. (ii) It also investigates Iranian heritage languages within the diasporic context of the West. The scope of languages covered is vast: In addition to discussing Iranian minority languages such as Tati and Balochi, the book explores non-Iranian minority languages such as Azeri, Tukmen, Armenian and Mandaic. Furthermore, the companion investigates Iranian heritage languages such as Wakhi, Pashto, and Persian within their diasporic and global contexts. In the current era of migration and globalization, minority and heritage speakers are increasingly valuable resources. By focusing on the speakers, the companion provides new insights into a multitude of sociolinguistic issues including language attitude and identity, language use and literacy practices, language policy, language shift and loss. The companion is an essential reference for those interested in Iranian languages, minority languages, heritage languages, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, language policy and planning, diaspora and migration studies, as well as those researching in related fields.

Pakistan by Wilson John Pdf

Does democracy have a chance in Pakistan? In the sixty years of its existence, Pakistan has experienced four military coups and has been ruled by the military for more than half the period. Even during the interludes of democracy, Pakistan's military exercised considerable power and influence. It also supported various militant groups in their causes, thus abetting terrorism. Ill-conceived policies of the military dictatorship in the country and failed intermittent civilian governments fuelled internal turmoil and branded Pakistan as a refuge for Islamic terrorists and a haven for the Taliban. Pakistan: The Struggle Within documents and analyses, among other things, the geopolitical scenario, the ethnic conflicts and civil-military relations in Pakistan, and explores its immediate future, all of which have a great and immediate relevance-not only to India but also to the international community. This book is a collection of essays written by some of the world's best-known scholars and analysts on Pakistan. It highlights how Pakistan continues to battle multiple challenges to its sovereignty, identity and survival as a nation-state.
