Posing in Paradise by Robert Bruce Stewart Pdf

In 1905, the great Henry James arrives in Northampton, Massachusetts, to deliver a lecture to the local literati. He is feted in a grand style—and so is the Englishman impersonating him. In the meantime, a vacationing Harry Reese has stumbled upon a body marinating in an abandoned canal bed. But rather than report the corpse, Harry decides to use it to distract his wife Emmie from her own literary ambitions. Then the body vanishes. Twice. These two plots, each sufficiently ludicrous in its own right, coalesce to produce a truly remarkable story, one that dares to answer the age-old question: is it possible for a man to drown in his blancmange? Yoga Twists and Turns by Emma Silverman Pdf

In yoga instructor Emma Silverman’s first book, beginning yogis learned how to bend, stretch, and relax while waiting for water to boil, standing at a bus stop, and even sitting in the stuffy middle seat in an airplane. In More Joy of Yoga, Silverman now lays out a series of warm-ups, yoga postures, and stretches to lead to specific intermediate and advanced yoga postures. This follow-up will bring readers more poses in the style format they loved so much in the first, but will be organized by the part of the body that receives the most benefit from each sequence. Also included are brief discussions about how each body part is related to different emotions. While working with More Joy of Yoga, students will not only advance to more difficult yoga postures, but also advance to the next level of connecting their body and emotions to their yoga practice.

A Gust for Paradise by Diane Kelsey McColley Pdf

This beautifully illustrated multidisciplinary study addresses interpretations of the Genesis creation story in Paradise Lost and other seventeenth-century English poems and in the visual arts from the Middle Ages through the Reformation. It considers poems, visual images, and music concerned with divine and human creativity and interprets these works as salutary examples for the creation of the arts and the preservation of the earth. The central topic is the daily work of body or mind of Adam and Eve in Paradise Lost as primal artists and caretakers of nature before the Fall, developing the arts of language, music, liturgy, and government, discovering the rudiments of a technology harmless to the biosphere, and dressing and keeping a garden that is an epitome of the whole earth. These unfallen arts promote awareness of the complex harmonies of creation and potentially of civilization: an awareness that is not only linear or binary but radiant and multiple; not only monodic but also choral. McColley argues that northern European visual artists and seventeenth-century English poets reimagined Eden in order to re-Edenize the imagination as a source of ethical and ecological healing. The best-known depictions of Adam and Eve in the visual arts, which focus on the drama of the all, depart from a widespread but undervalued tradition that more celebratory and regenerative and less susceptible to misogynous interpretation. This tradition includes the neglected topos of original righteousness and contributes to what we would now call ecological awareness. Poets allied to this view foster Edenic consciousness by creating a Paradisal language that weaves form, sound, image, metaphor, concept, and experience as closely as nature weaves life, and so exercises our sense of connections

Paradise Discourse, Imperialism, and Globalization by Sharae Deckard Pdf

This comparative study, the first of its kind, discusses paradise discourse in a wide range of writing from Mexico, Zanzibar, and Sri Lanka, including novels by authors such as Malcolm Lowry, Leonard Woolf, Juan Rulfo, Wilson Harris, Abdulrazak Gurnah, and Romesh Gunesekera. Tracing dialectical tropes of paradise across the "long modernity" of the capitalist world-system, Deckard reads literature from postcolonial nations in context with colonial discourse in order to demonstrate how paradise begins as a topos motivating European exploration and colonization, shifts into an ideological myth justifying imperial exploitation, and finally becomes a literary motif used by contemporary writers to critique neocolonial representations and conditions in the age of globalization. Combining a range of critical perspectives—cultural materialist, ecocritical, and postcolonial—the volume opens up a deeper understanding of the relation between paradise discourse and the destructive dynamics of plantation, tourism, and global capital. Deckard uncovers literature from East Africa and South Asia which has been previously overlooked in mainstream postcolonial criticism, and gestures to how the utopian dimensions of the paradise myth might be reclaimed to promote cultural resistance.
