Pppd by Mark Knoblauch Phd Pdf

Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness, or "PPPD", is one of the newest vestibular conditions to receive its official diagnostic criteria. Thought to originate from within the vestibular system and brain, PPPD typically generates chronic dizziness, vertigo, and/or unsteadiness that is worsened when patients are in an upright position. Despite these symptoms, vestibular tests are often found to be normal which ends up leaving patients with no real answers as to the cause of their ongoing dizziness. PPPD - A Patient's Guide to Understanding Persistent Perceptual-Postural Dizziness was written for the PPPD patient in order to summarize the available research specific to what PPPD is, who it affects, and how it can be treated. In addition, chapters are included that describe the structure and function of the vestibular system along with summarizing several other related vestibular conditions that are capable of producing symptoms similar to what is experienced with PPPD. This book is designed to be a comprehensive source of information for PPPD patients that can educate and empower them in their battle against PPPD. Over 110 research papers are cited throughout the book, helping patients to be armed with the latest and most relevant information that will allow them to have informed and productive discussions with their medical provider.

The Architecture of Waste by Caroline O'Donnell,Dillon Pranger Pdf

Global material crises are imminent. In the very near future, recycling will no longer be a choice made by those concerned about the environment, but a necessity for all. This means a paradigm shift in domestic behavior, manufacturing, construction, and design is inevitable. The Architecture of Waste provides a hopeful outlook through examining current recycling practices, rethinking initial manufacturing techniques, and proposing design solutions for second lives of material-objects. The book touches on a variety of inescapable issues beyond our global waste crisis including cultural psyches, politics, economics, manufacturing, marketing, and material science. A series of crucial perspectives from experts cover these topics and frames the research by providing a past, present, and future look at how we got here and where we go next: the historical, the material, and the design. Twelve design proposals look beyond the simple application of recycled and waste materials in architecture—an admirable endeavor but one that does not engage the urgent reality of a circular economy—by aiming to transform familiar, yet flawed, material-objects into closed-loop resources. Complete with over 150 color images and written for both professionals and students, The Architecture of Waste is a necessary reference for rethinking the traditional role of the architect and challenging the discipline to address urgent material issues within the larger design process.

Challenges and current research status of vertigo/vestibular diseases, volume II by Andrea Castellucci,Daogong Zhang,Wenyan Li,Hubertus Axer,Nicolas Perez-Fernandez,Sulin Zhang,Jun Wang Pdf

This Research Topic is the second volume of the Research Topic "Challenges and Current Research Status of Vertigo/Vestibular Diseases". Please see the first volume here. Vertigo or vestibular disorders have become a common handicap across the globe, which poses a great burden on health care resources. Vertigo is not a disease entity per se, but rather a leading symptom of many etiologically different diseases. These conditions include dysfunction of the vestibular system, both peripheral (inner ear, vestibular nerve) and central (brainstem, cerebellum), functional dizziness, and diseases of other causes, including blood pressure regulation disorders, such as orthostatic dizziness, and adverse drug reactions. Previous studies demonstrated that vestibular disorders might be a modifiable condition and a possible target for secondary prevention of cognitive impairment due to aging, dementia, social isolation, late-life depression, frailty, and increased risk of mortality. To date, the assessment strategy for patients with vertigo or vestibular disorders has not been fully developed. Vertigo or vestibular disorders are mechanistically complicated, highly prevalent, difficult to differentiate from other conditions, and may lead to vestibular or mental disability. Further understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of peripheral, central, and functional vestibular vertigo syndromes as well as their management through this research program or project will benefit patients and their families, thus reducing the economic burden on society at large. The editors welcome any types of manuscripts --- Original Research, Opinions, Review, and Systematic Review concerning vertigo/vestibular disorders. The subjects include but are not limited to the following: • Epidemiological investigation of vertigo or vestibular disorders • Molecular and genetic studies of vertigo or vestibular disorders • Differential diagnosis of peripheral and central positional vertigo • Differentiation and treatment of Meniere's disease, vestibular migraine and their comorbidities • Recurrence and residual symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo • Inner ear malformation and vestibular dysfunction • Vestibular migraine and sleep disorders • Paroxysmal ataxia and dizziness • Vertigo and balance disorders (falls, abnormal gait, instability, etc.) • Vestibular testing and imaging in patients with vertigo or vestibular disorders • Cognitive impairment and vestibular disorders • Multisensory integration and vestibular disorders • Mental diseases (anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc.) and vertigo disorders • Research on vestibular compensation and rehabilitation training • Social and psychological aspects and burdens in people with vertigo • Vertigo and dizziness in older adults • Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) • Functional brain states in vertigo/dizziness • Neuroimaging in vertigo/dizziness
