Managing Organic Matter in Tropical Soils: Scope and Limitations by Christopher Martius,Holm Tiessen,Paul L.G. Vlek Pdf

Soil organic matter is a reservoir for plant nutrients, provides water-holding capacity, stabilizes soil structure against compaction and erosion, and thus determines soil productivity. All agriculture to some degree depends on soil organic matter. It has long been known that soil organic matter declines when land is taken into cultivation, and that the productivity of new agricultural land is governed by fertility contributions from decomposing natural organic matter. The expansion of agriculture to ever new and more fragile lands, particularly in tropical and developing regions, causes environmental degradation with local effects on soil quality, regional effects on landscape integrity and water quality, and global effects on carbon cycles and the atmosphere. This book summarizes current knowledge of the properties and dynamics of soil organic matter in the tropics, its role in determining soil quality, its stability and turnover, and the options for management in the context of tropical landuse systems, for a readership of resource scientists, economists and advanced students. Maintenance of organic matter is critical for preventing land degradation. Case studies and practical applications are therefore an important part of the book, as are the exploration of future directions in research and management.

Mid-Atlantic Freshwater Wetlands: Advances in Wetlands Science, Management, Policy, and Practice by Robert P. Brooks,Denice Heller Wardrop Pdf

The lands and waters of the Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) have changed significantly since before the 16th century when the Susquehannock lived in the area. Much has changed since Captain John Smith penetrated the estuaries and rivers during the early 17th century; since the surveying of the Mason-Dixon Line to settle border disputes among Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware during the middle of the 18th century; and since J. Thomas Scharf described the physiographic setting of Baltimore County in the late 19th century. As early as 1881, Scharf provides us with an assessment of the condition of the aquatic ecosystems of the region, albeit in narrative form, and already changes are taking place – the conversion of forests to fields, the founding of towns and cities, and the depletion of natural resources. We have always conducted our work with the premise that “man” is part of, and not apart from, this ecosystem and landscape. This premise, and the historical changes in our landscape, provide the foundation for our overarching research question: how do human activities impact the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and the ecosystem services that they provide, and how can we optimize this relationship?

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN ACADEMIC RADIOLOGY by Ronald L. Arenson,Cathy Garzio Pdf

This is a practical nuts-and-bolts guide that is based on the authors’ experience and success in the Radiology Department at the University of California at San Francisco. Academic chairs, especially those recently appointed, struggle with leadership and management. Many have little prior experience in these areas. The material presented here is practical and specific. Each chapter is independent of the others, and the text can be used mostly as a reference tool. The text deals with the major issues facing academic Radiology leaders. The topics selected were chosen carefully and are based on the authors’ collective years of experience attempting to manage their own department but also consult for many others. The first topic is the balance among the three primary missions of an academic department, namely, clinical care, teaching, and research. These three major missions will be described in some depth, with an effort to provide reference materials that, hopefully, will stand the test of time and remain useful over the years to come. In addition, this text will provide guidance about faculty development, departmental organization, marketing and fundraising, and strategic perspectives. It will be of interest to chairs, departmental administrators, vice-chairs and other departmental leaders, section chiefs, hospital administrators and, of course, consultants.

Demystifying Chinese Management by Malcolm Warner,Chris Rowley Pdf

Today, with a new leadership in place, the People’s Republic of China enters a challenging new phase as an emerging economic superpower. The Chinese economy has dramatically changed over the three decades since Deng Xiaoping launched his economic reforms in 1978. It has been transformed from a command economy dominated by state-owned enterprises to a market socialist economy with a wide range of ownership forms, both public and private. In turn, its managers and management have correspondingly undergone a major sea-change. This edited collection attempts to demystify Chinese management, highlighting recent research into these significant changes and their implications in a wide range of business enterprises both in China and overseas. It points to the strategic challenges and issues in terms of realizing the managerial version of the ‘Chinese Dream’. The topics covered include business schools in China, corporate social responsibility, financial services, impression management, international human resource management, international competitive strategy choices, internationalization of firms and the role of science parks. The book was originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Attracting, Recruiting, and Retaining Skilled Staff for Transportation System Operations and Management by Brian E. Cronin Pdf

The purpose of this project was to provide transportation agencies with strategies and resources to meet their needs for attracting, recruiting, and retaining transportation system operations and management (SOM) staff. The research described herein considers the potential supply and demand for SOM skills and staffing; the actions transportation agencies may take to attract, recruit, develop, and retain skilled staff with SOM capabilities; and the tools that are available or may be developed to assist agencies in attracting and recruiting skilled staff in this area. SOM draws on the knowledge of many disciplines including, for example, traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems, maintenance, emergency response, traffic operations, traffic safety, incident management, performance measurement, and system planning applied in a comprehensive approach to increase the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. SOM encompasses interactions among transportation modes and between the transportation system and other functions such as emergency management, public safety, and outreach. In this report, we provide information regarding the methodology, results, recommended action plans, and potential future research directions in relation to this project.

Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management by Walter Leal Filho Pdf

There has been some degree of reluctance in the past to consider disaster risk management within the mainstream of adaptation to climate variability and climate change. However, there is now wide recognition of the need to incorporate disaster risk management concerns in dealing with such phenomena. There is also a growing awareness of the necessity for a multi-sectoral approach in managing the effects of climate variability and climate change, since this can lead to a significant reduction of risk. This book presents the latest findings from scientific research on climate variation, climate change and their links with disaster risk management. It showcases projects and other initiatives in this field that are being undertaken in both industrialised and developing countries, by universities and scientific institutions, government bodies, national and international agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders. Finally, it discusses current and future challenges, identifying opportunities and highlighting the still unrealised potential for promoting better understanding of the connections between climate variation, climate change and disaster risk management worldwide.
