Sex-Specific Analysis of Cardiovascular Function by Peter L. M. Kerkhof,Virginia M. Miller Pdf

This book gathers together contributions from internationally renowned authors in the field of cardiovascular systems and provides crucial insight into the importance of sex- and gender-concepts during the analysis of patient data. This innovative title is the first to offer the elements necessary to consider sex-related properties in both clinical and basic studies regarding the heart and circulation on multiscale levels (i.e. molecular, cellular, electrophysiologically, neuroendocrine, immunoregulatory, organ, allometric, and modeling). Observed differences at (ultra)cellular and organ level are quantified, with focus on clinical relevance and implications for diagnosis and patient management. Since the cardiovascular system is of vital importance for all tissues, Sex-Specific Analysis of Cardiovascular Function is an essential source of information for clinicians, biologists, and biomedical investigators. The wide spectrum of differences described in this book will also act as an eye-opener and serve as a handbook for students, teachers, scientists and practitioners.

Big Data in Cardiology. Predicting, Preventing and Managing Diseases by Bikal Dhungel Pdf

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Health Sciences - Health Logistics, grade: 1,7, Linnaeus University (School of Informatics), course: Information Systems, language: English, abstract: This study was conducted to analyze this process closer focusing on a case of Cardiology. Conducting a comprehensive literature review and qualitative expert interviews, the impact of big data in the field of Cardiology was explored. The result of the study shows that big data can play a positive role in three aspects: prediction of disease, prevention of disease and management of disease. Big data enables us to build models that can be used to predict the occurrence of disease. Based on this information, actions can be taken to prevent the disease. Data also helps to manage the disease by offering helpful insights. Medical personnel can retrieve the patient data, with the help of AI, they can make faster decisions allowing them to spend more quality time with the patients and reduce cognitive errors. Through the interviews, it was understood that even though the positive role of big data has been acknowledged, the implementation is still a challenge due to various limitations. The challenges lie mainly on technical know-how and domain knowledge. Further challenges were data security and privacy issues that need to be addressed to mitigate the risks that can be caused by them. The examples of big data implementation in various cases like in heart failure prediction or prevention shows a positive picture. The overwhelming majority of case studies analyzed in this regard show an optimistic picture. Due to growing importance and use of smart devices, IoT, genomics and the recent developments in the field of ICTs, it is expected that big data will not only leave a positive influence on the field of Cardiology, it will also change the way medicine is practiced and healthcare is offered. The statement ‘Data is the new oil’ has been broadly acknowledged due to its wide-ranging importance. Utilizing big data offers a variety of benefits. Although the health sector was late in terms of exploiting the benefits of big data, currently, the adoption is accelerating. Healthcare is increasingly becoming an information science and the implementation of electronic medical records (EMR) and other information systems is growing rapidly. The patient data originating from smart devices and other sources like genomic databases are supporting the healthcare sector offering better healthcare delivery and increasing efficiency, hence saving costs.

Economic Dimensions of Personalized and Precision Medicine by Ernst R. Berndt,Dana P. Goldman,John Rowe Pdf

Personalized and precision medicine (PPM)—the targeting of therapies according to an individual’s genetic, environmental, or lifestyle characteristics—is becoming an increasingly important approach in health care treatment and prevention. The advancement of PPM is a challenge in traditional clinical, reimbursement, and regulatory landscapes because it is costly to develop and introduces a wide range of scientific, clinical, ethical, and socioeconomic issues. PPM raises a multitude of economic issues, including how information on accurate diagnosis and treatment success will be disseminated and who will bear the cost; changes to physician training to incorporate genetics, probability and statistics, and economic considerations; questions about whether the benefits of PPM will be confined to developed countries or will diffuse to emerging economies with less developed health care systems; the effects of patient heterogeneity on cost-effectiveness analysis; and opportunities for PPM’s growth beyond treatment of acute illness, such as prevention and reversal of chronic conditions. This volume explores the intersection of the scientific, clinical, and economic factors affecting the development of PPM, including its effects on the drug pipeline, on reimbursement of PPM diagnostics and treatments, and on funding of the requisite underlying research; and it examines recent empirical applications of PPM.

Toward Precision Medicine by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Board on Life Sciences,Committee on A Framework for Developing a New Taxonomy of Disease Pdf

Motivated by the explosion of molecular data on humans-particularly data associated with individual patients-and the sense that there are large, as-yet-untapped opportunities to use this data to improve health outcomes, Toward Precision Medicine explores the feasibility and need for "a new taxonomy of human disease based on molecular biology" and develops a potential framework for creating one. The book says that a new data network that integrates emerging research on the molecular makeup of diseases with clinical data on individual patients could drive the development of a more accurate classification of diseases and ultimately enhance diagnosis and treatment. The "new taxonomy" that emerges would define diseases by their underlying molecular causes and other factors in addition to their traditional physical signs and symptoms. The book adds that the new data network could also improve biomedical research by enabling scientists to access patients' information during treatment while still protecting their rights. This would allow the marriage of molecular research and clinical data at the point of care, as opposed to research information continuing to reside primarily in academia. Toward Precision Medicine notes that moving toward individualized medicine requires that researchers and health care providers have access to very large sets of health- and disease-related data linked to individual patients. These data are also critical for developing the information commons, the knowledge network of disease, and ultimately the new taxonomy.

Molecular Cardiology by Zhongjie Sun Pdf

The aim of Molecular Cardiology: Methods and Protocols is to document state-of-the-art molecular and genetic techniques in the area of cardiology. These modern approaches enable researchers to readily study heart diseases at the molecular level and will promote the development of new therapeutic str- egies. Methods for genetic dissection, signal transduction, and microarray analysis are excellent tools for the study of the molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases. Protocols for transgenesis take advantage of recent advances in many areas of molecular and cell biology. Transgenic models of heart diseases (cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac dysfunction, and so on. ) are powerful tools for the study of heart disease pathogenesis. Methods for gene transfer to heart tissue using viral and nonviral vectors form the basis of gene therapy for heart diseases. Heart-specific promoters containing a hypox- inducible cardioprotective gene switch are key for protection of the heart from ischemia. Gene and stem cell therapies open novel and exciting avenues for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases. Molecular Cardiology: Methods and Protocols consists of 26 chapters de- ing with various aspects of molecular cardiology, including gene transfer and gene therapy for cardiovascular disease, stem cell therapy for cardiovascular disease, gene analysis in the injured and hypertrophied heart, and transgenesis in cardiovascular research. This book provides step-by-step methods for the successful completion of experimental procedures, and would be useful for both experienced and new investigators in the field of molecular cardiology.

This open access volume focuses on the development of a P5 eHealth, or better, a methodological resource for developing the health technologies of the future, based on patients’ personal characteristics and needs as the fundamental guidelines for design. It provides practical guidelines and evidence based examples on how to design, implement, use and elevate new technologies for healthcare to support the management of incurable, chronic conditions. The volume further discusses the criticalities of eHealth, why it is difficult to employ eHealth from an organizational point of view or why patients do not always accept the technology, and how eHealth interventions can be improved in the future. By dealing with the state-of-the-art in eHealth technologies, this volume is of great interest to researchers in the field of physical and mental healthcare, psychologists, stakeholders and policymakers as well as technology developers working in the healthcare sector.
