Inclusion in Early Childhood Programs, 8th Edition by Rachel Langford,Bernice Cipparrone,Mari Pighini,Nicole Ineese-Nash ,K. Eileen Allen,Glynnis Cowdery Pdf

Inclusion in Early Childhood Programs examines the education and care of children with disabilities from birth through school age. Readers are provided with brief coverage of child development theory and the barriers to true inclusion at all levels—program, community, and government. In this text, the fact that children are different is not hidden: rather we seek to recognize and celebrate human diversity. An inclusive approach to working with children who have disabilities requires drawing on a social and relational model of disability, critical disability studies, a disability justice framework, critical race theory, ethics of care, and child development theory. This resource provides updated research and current trends, reflecting the challenges educators face today. It inspires readers to work toward a world of inclusivity for all.

Adapting Early Childhood Curricula for Children with Special Needs by Ruth E. Cook,Annette Tessier,Virginia B. Armbruster Pdf

His comprehensive, practical book is built on solid theory and evidence-based practices from both the fields of Special Education and Early Childhood Education. When the first edition was conceived in 1980, the authors encountered students who either had a strong special education background or a strong early childhood (child development) background. Each group had a lot to learn from the other and a lot to contribute to the other. The original purpose was to bring together the best from both fields into Early Childhood Special Education. The book continues to take a practical, "activity based" approach that is theoretically sound and current. It also provides ample detail related to specific intervention strategies that enhance the effective use of embedded learning opportunities within daily curriculum activities and routines. Its relatively jargon free, "readable" approach, that is built on evidence-based practices, make it appropriate for a wide range of readers. The illustrations of techniques and strategies throughout make it sustainable as a resource.. It has always encouraged a family-centered, inclusive approach to working with young children with special needs and their families.

In this book, a distinguished group of early childhood special educators and researchers explores the barriers to and influences on inclusive education settings for young children. Chapters cover such timely topics as individualized instruction, social relationships of children with disabilities, collaborative relationships among adults, family perceptions of inclusion, classroom ecology and child participation, community participation, social policy, and cultural and linguistic diversity. Expert contributors, addressing each of these topics, draw useful implications for practitioners-providing helpful suggestions for modifying activities, materials, environmental supports, and teaching strategies. Based on a groundbreaking 5-year research study conducted by the Early Childhood Research Institute on Inclusion, Widening the Circle is a must read for all professionals working in inclusive settings.

Educating Young Children With and Without Exceptionalities by Tachelle Banks,Festus E. Obiakor,Jessica Graves,Anthony F. Rotatori Pdf

Early childhood education (ECE) has always been intertwined with the use of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP). To support excellence in ECE, it is critical how the knowledge about individual children and child development principles combined with the knowledge of effective early learning practices. Effective early childhood education involves an interdisciplinary collaborative process that is influenced by many factors. We present these aforementioned realities in Educating Young Children With and Without Exceptionalities: New Perspectives. In addition, we argue that general and special educators need to focus on applying new knowledge to better address critical issues that advance the field of educator preparation and improve educational outcomes for young children. Early childhood research confirms the need for intensive intervention and remedial education—we need to avoid approaches that are “too little” or “too late.” Also proven to yield positive results for children are practices familiar to early childhood educators. These practices include relationship-based teaching and learning; partnering with families; adapting teaching for children from different backgrounds and for individual children; active, meaningful, and connected learning; and smaller class sizes. Evidence of the benefits of these practices suggests that they should be extended more widely into the elementary grades.
