Comprehensive Guidelines for Prevention and Control of Dengue and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever by WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia Pdf

Dengue Fever is the fastest emerging arboviral infection with major public health consequences for millions of people around the world, and in particular the South-East Asia region. These regional guidelines were extensively revised, updated and expanded with the focus on new and additional topics of current relevance to the populations of the region. They are intended to provide guidance to national and local-level program managers and public health officials, as well as stakeholders, including health practitioners, laboratory personnel and multisectoral partners, in strategic planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and strengthening the response to dengue prevention and control in their countries. Scientists and researchers involved in vaccine and antiviral drug development will also find crucial baseline information in this publication.

Prevention and Control of Dengue and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever by WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific Pdf

A comprehensive guide to the diagnosis, clinical management, epidemiological, surveillance, prevention and control of dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever. Although guidelines and advice are universally relevant, the manual is specifically designed for use in South-East Asian countries, where dengue fever remains a major public health concern. Recommendations and advice respond to research demonstrating that different geographic areas show a variable response to infection, have different epidemiological patterns, and require different approaches to control. The book also responds to past failures to control dengue in these countries, citing almost exclusive concentration on space spraying of adult mosquitoes as one of the most important causes. With these problems in mind, the book places major emphasis on measures that can make communities responsible for vector control in the domestic environment as the best way to secure sustained improvements in prevention and control. The book has twelve chapters. The first summarizes what is known about the virus, vector, host, transmission cycle, and virus-host interactions. A brief overview of the global situation is followed by a detailed chronology of the resurgence of dengue in South-East Asia. Clinical manifestations and diagnosis are covered in chapter two, which includes precise criteria for reaching a diagnosis based on clinical manifestations and laboratory findings. Chapter three, on clinical management, gives particular attention to the management of dengue shock syndrome as a medical emergency. The important role of laboratory diagnosis is addressed in chapter four, which describes in detail the laboratory confirmatory tests that are essential for diagnosis. A chapter offering advice on the epidemiological surveillance of cases and vectors is followed by a brief description of vector distribution and bioecology. The second half of the book is devoted to strategies for prevention and control, emphasizing vector control measures that can be undertaken by communities as the best approach to successful and sustainable control. Detailed advice, supported by line drawings, checklists, and charts, is given for all appropriate environmental, biological, and chemical methods of vector control. The book also includes a chapter explaining how to develop an emergency plan for rapid response to epidemics. Further practical guidance is provided in a series of fifteen annexes, which include a model arbovirus laboratory request form, a guide to the relative sensitivity and interpretation of serological tests, and abundant advice on environmental and chemical methods of vector control specific to South-East Asia.

Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in the Americas by Pan American Sanitary Bureau Pdf

Dengue and its potentially fatal forms, dengue henorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, once more threaten much of the Americas. In the 1980s the vector control programmes fell victim to the cutbacks in public health expenditure and their responses to dengue outbreaks tended to be a little too late. These guidelines have risen to the challenge by incorporating all aspects of the prevention and control of the disease and its vectors. In addition, because dengue is primarily a problem of domestic sanitation and households can combat the problem inexpensively. The guidelines enmphasize ways to transfer responsibility for dengue control and prevention to the community."

The incidence of dengue has increased significantly over the years, afflicting dramatic proportions season after season. Dengue is primarily a mosquito-borne viral disease of the topics. Its deadly forms -- dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome -- have become serious problems and are spreading across borders. Deadly Dengue explains what dengue is and how it spreads; about Aedes aegypti, a day-biting mosquito and the dengue virus; preventive measures and about the clinical manifestations; complications and laboratory tests. The book particularly emphasises early detection and treatment of dengue and cautions against late detection. Following which the treatment can get costly and may not be available in best hospitals. Current Topics in Tropical Emerging Diseases and Travel Medicine by Alfonso J. Rodriguez-Morales Pdf

Tropical emerging diseases pose a significant risk for the circulation of old and new pathogens in areas previously unknown, also implying the possibility of new morbidities and mortalities and new consequences for naïve populations. Globalization, migration and travel are key factors for tropical diseases, and represent the need for integration of tropical medicine, travel medicine and epidemiology in the understanding of such complex situations. Neglected tropical diseases such as leprosy or Chagas disease, arboviral diseases, HIV, Ebola, and arenaviral infections are just a few examples. This book tries to update significant epidemiological and clinical research in many aspects with a multinational perspective.

Current Topics in Vector Research by Anonim Pdf

Vector transmission of pathogens affecting human, animal, and plant health continues to plague mankind both in industrialized and Third World coun tries. The diseases caused by these pathogens cost billions of dollars an nually in medical expenses and lost productivity. Some cause widespread of food-and fiber-producing plants and animals, whereas others destruction present direct and immediate threats to human life and further development in Third World countries. During the past 15 years or so, we have witnessed an explosive increase in interest in how vectors acquire, carry, and subsequently inoculate dis ease agents to human, animal, and plant hosts. This interest transcends the boundaries of anyone discipline and involves researchers from such varied fields as human and veterinary medicine, entomology, plant pa thology, virology, physiology, microbiology, parasitology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetic engineering, ultrastructure, biophysics, bio systematics, biogeography, ecology, behavioral sciences, and others. Ac companying and perhaps generating this renewed interest is the realization that fundamental knowledge of pathogen-vector-host interrelationships is a first and necessary step in our quest for efficient, safe methods of disease control.
