Inverse Problems are found in many areas of engineering mechanics and there are many successful applications e.g. in non-destructive testing and characterization of material properties by ultrasonic or X-ray techniques, thermography, etc. Generally speaking, inverse problems are concerned with the determination of the input and the characteristics of a system, given certain aspects of its output. Mathematically, such problems are ill-posed and have to be overcome through development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures. Following the IUTAM Symposium on these topics, held in May 1992 in Tokyo, another in November 1994 in Paris, and also the more recent ISIP'98 in March 1998 in Nagano, it was concluded that it would be fruitful to gather regularly with researchers and engineers for an exchange of the newest research ideas. The most recent Symposium of this series "International Symposium on Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics (ISIP2000)" was held in March of 2000 in Nagano, Japan, where recent developments in inverse problems in engineering mechanics and related topics were discussed. The following general areas in inverse problems in engineering mechanics were the subjects of ISIP2000: mathematical and computational aspects of inverse problems, parameter or system identification, shape determination, sensitivity analysis, optimization, material property characterization, ultrasonic non-destructive testing, elastodynamic inverse problems, thermal inverse problems, and other engineering applications. The papers in these proceedings provide a state-of-the-art review of the research on inverse problems in engineering mechanics and it is hoped that some breakthrough in the research can be made and that technology transfer will be stimulated and accelerated due to their publication.

The theme of the 15th International Acoustic Emission Symposium (IAES15) was set as 'practicality for life-extension and maintenance of plants and structures'. Special emphasis was placed on the review of acoustic emission (AE) research and applications in the 20th century and its future in the 21st century. The technique for monitoring defects and abnormal vibrations due to machine failures is vitally important for the safety of structures in a modern society. AE, as a passive, rather than an active NDT method, has drawn much attention because of its applicability to on-stream surveillance of structures. One important point is its capability to acquire data very simply but with high sensitivity so that the development of a non-contact sensing technique is particularly important. A quantitative method to evaluate structural integrity and remaining life from the detected AE signals is strongly required. Quantitative analysis, based on inverse procedures, has provided a certain solution, but has not been utilized widely enough in structures due to its complexity. Its applicability is limited partly because the accuracy of solutions depends on noise levels and partly because the phenomenon is usually non-reproducible. AE is expected to be a next-generation technique not only to monitor conditions but also for the repair of damaged structures, combined with an active-adaptive technique using a 'solid state actuator'. 'Smart Materials and Structures' are known in this respect. AE is considered to be a very promising technique, together with such sensing techniques as optical fiber, shape memory alloy and electro-rheological fluid. Thus, AE can play a very important roll in monitoring, evaluating and repairing structures. In this workshop, a limited number of invited papers are presented for technical discussion to review the achievements of AE research and applications in the 20th century. The proceedings are entitled Acoustic Emission - Beyond the Millennium to celebrate the new millennium, and stepping forward to a new era. The authors and topics of these review papers were selected by the editorial board.

The ESIS-Technical Committee 9 on Concrete was established in 1990 and has met seven times. A proposal was put to European and extra-European laboratories entitled "Scale effects and transitional failure phenomena of reinforced concrete beams in flexure" which lead to several positive responses. The central topic discussed by the committee was that of the minimum reinforcement in concrete members. The minimum amount of reinforcement is defined as that for which "peak load at first concrete cracking" and "ultimate load after steel yielding" are equal. In this way, any brittle behaviour is avoided as well as any localized failure, if the member is not over-reinforced. In other words, there is a reinforcement percentage range, depending on the size-scale, within which the plastic limit analysis may be applied with its static and kinematic theorems. Carpinteri, Ferro, Bosco and El-Katieb propose a LEFM model, according to which reinforcement reactions are applied directly on the crack surfaces and a compatibility condition is locally imposed on the crack opening displacement in correspondence with the reinforcement. The theoretical model is found to provide a satisfactory estimate of the minimum percentage of reinforcement that depends on the scale and enables the element in flexure to prevent brittle failure.
