Internal Spin Structure Of The Nucleon - Proceedings Of The Symposium by Vernon W Hughes,Christian Cavata Pdf

The topic of the internal spin structure of the nucleon has become an unusually active subfield of particle and nuclear physics, together with the relevant technologies. This volume presents up-to-date coverage. All the talks given at the symposium can be found in the volume. In addition, selected articles are reprinted, including two early papers which record initial thinking about the topic, all experimental papers giving data on nucleon spin structure functions determined from polarized lepton-nucleon scattering, and two valuable previously unpublished papers.

Proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Polarization Phenomena in Nuclear Reactions by Grüebler,König Pdf

The Fourth International Symposium on Polarization Phenomena in Nuclear Reactions took place from August 25 to 29, 1975, at the Swiss Federal Instituteof Technology in Zurich (ETHZ). Apart from the host institution the Symposium was also supported by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, the Swiss National Science Founda tion and the Swiss Physical Society. The program of the Symposium was set up with the advice of an International Program Committee with the following members: Prof. I. Ja. Barit, USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, USSR Prof. E. Baumgartner, University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland Prof. H. E. Conzett, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Berkeley, USA Dr. W. Gruebler, Laboratorium fUr Kernphysik, ETH Zurich Prof. W. Haeberli, University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA Prof. S. S. Hanna, Stanford University, Stanford, USA Prof. J. McKee, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada Prof. G. C. Morrison, University of Birmingham, England Dr. G. G. Ohlsen, LASL, Las Alamos, USA Prof. J. Raynal, C. E. N. Saclay, France Dr. M. Simonius, Laboratorium fUr Kernphysik, ETH Zurich The Local Organizing Committee consisted of Dr. R. Balzer Dr. W. Grtiebler Dr. H. Jung Dr. V. Konig Prof. J. Lang Dr. M. Simonius Prof. W. G. Weitkamp (on leave from University of Washington, Seattle) It was generally felt that the Fourth Polarization Symposium should emphasize the importance of polarization measurements in the different fields of nuclear physics and explain the physical content of polariza tion phenomena.

An Assessment of U.S.-Based Electron-Ion Collider Science by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Physics and Astronomy,Committee on U.S.-Based Electron-Ion Collider Science Assessment Pdf

Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

Radiological Safety Aspects of the Operation of Proton Accelerators by Ralph H. Thomas,Graham R. Stevenson,International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

This report serves as a guide for the planning and implementation of radiation protection programmes for all types of positive ion accelerators. The basic types of accelerators are briefly described, followed by a detailed description of several installations covering the energy range from 10 MeV to 500 GeV. Special emphasis is given to the production of ionizing radiation and its transmission through shielding, computer techniques for shield design, radiation measurement and interpretation, and the radiological impact of accelerators on the environment. Extensive references are given so the book can serve as a source to the published literature.

To See the Unseen by Andrew J. Butrica Pdf

A comprehensive & illuminating history of this little-understood, but surprisingly significant scientific activity. Quite rigorous & systematic in its methodology, the book explores the development of the radar astronomy specialty in the larger community of scientists. More than just discussing the development of this field, however, the author uses planetary radar astronomy as a vehicle for understanding larger issues relative to the planning & execution of "big science" by the Fed. government. Sources, interviews, technical essay, abbreviations, & index.

Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice by Arie Wallert,Erma Hermens,Marja Peek Pdf

Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
