Foliations: Geometry and Dynamics by Paweł Walczak,Lawrence Conlon,Rémi Langevin,Takashi Tsuboi Pdf

This volume contains surveys and research articles regarding different aspects of the theory of foliation. The main aspects concern the topology of foliations of low-dimensional manifolds, the geometry of foliated Riemannian manifolds and the dynamical properties of foliations. Among the surveys are lecture notes devoted to the analysis of some operator algebras on foliated manifolds and the theory of confoliations (objects defined recently by W Thurston and Y Eliashberg, situated between foliations and contact structures). Among the research articles one can find a detailed proof of an unpublished theorem (due to Duminy) concerning ends of leaves in exceptional minimal sets. Contents:Survey Articles:Some Results on Secondary Characteristic Classes of Transversely Holomorphic Foliations (T Asuke)LS-Categories for Foliated Manifolds (H Colman)Dynamics and the Godbillon–Vey Class: A History and Survey (S Hurder)Similarity and Conformal Geometry of Foliations (R Langevin)Foliations and Contact Structures on 3-Manifolds (Y Mitsumatsu)Operator Algebras and the Index Theorem on Foliated Manifolds (H Moriyoshi)Research Articles:Distributional Betti Numbers of Transitive Foliations of Codimension One (J Álvarez-López & Y Kordyukov)Tautly Foliated 3-Manifolds with No R-Covered Foliations (M Brittenham)Endests of Exceptional Leaves — A Theorem of G Duminy (J Cantwell & L Conlon)Foliations and Compactly Generated Pseudogroups (A Haefliger)Transverse Lusternik–Schnirelmann Category and Non-Proper Leaves (R Langevin & P Walczak)On Exact Poisson Manifolds of Dimension 3 (T Mizutani)On the Perfectness of Groups of Diffeomorphisms of the Interval Tangent to the Identity at the Endpoints (T Tsuboi)and other papers Readership: Researchers interested in mathematics, especially in fields related to differential geometry and topology, and the theory of dynamical systems. Generic Coarse Geometry of Leaves by Jesús A. Álvarez López,Alberto Candel Pdf

This book provides a detailed introduction to the coarse quasi-isometry of leaves of a foliated space and describes the cases where the generic leaves have the same quasi-isometric invariants. Every leaf of a compact foliated space has an induced coarse quasi-isometry type, represented by the coarse metric defined by the length of plaque chains given by any finite foliated atlas. When there are dense leaves either all dense leaves without holonomy are uniformly coarsely quasi-isometric to each other, or else every leaf is coarsely quasi-isometric to just meagerly many other leaves. Moreover, if all leaves are dense, the first alternative is characterized by a condition on the leaves called coarse quasi-symmetry. Similar results are proved for more specific coarse invariants, like growth type, asymptotic dimension, and amenability. The Higson corona of the leaves is also studied. All the results are richly illustrated with examples. The book is primarily aimed at researchers on foliated spaces. More generally, specialists in geometric analysis, topological dynamics, or metric geometry may also benefit from it.

This volume takes a look at the current state of the theory of foliations, with surveys and research articles concerning different aspects. The focused aspects cover geometry of foliated Riemannian manifolds, Riemannian foliations and dynamical properties of foliations and some aspects of classical dynamics related to the field. Among the articles readers may find a study of foliations which admit a transverse contractive flow, an extensive survey on non-commutative geometry of Riemannian foliations, an article on contact structures converging to foliations, as well as a few articles on conformal geometry of foliations. This volume also contains a list of open problems in foliation theory which were collected from the participants of the Foliations 2005 conference. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Morphisms of Pseudogroups and foliated Maps (808 KB). Contents: Morphisms of Pseudogroups and Foliated Maps (J ulvarez Lpez & X Masa); On Infinitesimal Derivatives of the Bott Class (T Asuke); Hirsch Foliations in Codimension Greater Than One (A Bis, S Hurder & J Shive); Extrinsic Geometry of Foliations on 3-Manifolds (D Bolotov); Extrinsic Geometry of Foliations (M Czarnecki & P Walczak); Transversal Twistor Spinors on a Riemannian Foliation (S D Jung); A Survey on Simplicial Volume and Invariants of Foliations and Laminations (T Kuessner); Harmonic Foliations of the Plane, a Conformal Approach (R Langevin); Consecutive Shifts Along Orbits of Vector Fields (S Maksymenko); Generalized Equivariant Index Theory (K Richardson); Vanishing Results for Spectral Terms of a Riemannian Foliation (V Slesar); On the Group of Foliation Preserving Diffeomorphisms (T Tsuboi); and other papers. Foliation Theory in Algebraic Geometry by Paolo Cascini,James McKernan,Jorge Vitório Pereira Pdf

Featuring a blend of original research papers and comprehensive surveys from an international team of leading researchers in the thriving fields of foliation theory, holomorphic foliations, and birational geometry, this book presents the proceedings of the conference "Foliation Theory in Algebraic Geometry," hosted by the Simons Foundation in New York City in September 2013. Topics covered include: Fano and del Pezzo foliations; the cone theorem and rank one foliations; the structure of symmetric differentials on a smooth complex surface and a local structure theorem for closed symmetric differentials of rank two; an overview of lifting symmetric differentials from varieties with canonical singularities and the applications to the classification of AT bundles on singular varieties; an overview of the powerful theory of the variety of minimal rational tangents introduced by Hwang and Mok; recent examples of varieties which are hyperbolic and yet the Green-Griffiths locus is the whole of X; and a classification of psuedoeffective codimension one distributions. Foliations play a fundamental role in algebraic geometry, for example in the proof of abundance for threefolds and to a solution of the Green-Griffiths conjecture for surfaces of general type with positive Segre class. The purpose of this volume is to foster communication and enable interactions between experts who work on holomorphic foliations and birational geometry, and to bring together leading researchers to demonstrate the powerful connection of ideas, methods, and goals shared by these two areas of study./div
