Physical and Chemical Characterization of Dredged Material Influents and Effluents in Confined Land Disposal Areas by Ronald E. Hoeppel,Robert M. Engler,Tommy E. Myers Pdf

Nine dredged material land containment areas, located at upland, lowland, and island sites, were monitored during hydraulic dredging operations in fresh- and brackish-water riverine, lake, and estuarine environments. Influent-effluent sampling at the diked disposal areas showed that, with proper retention of suspended solids, most chemical constituents could be removed to near or below background water levels. Most heavy metals, oil and grease, chlorinated pesticides, and PCB's were almost totally associated with solids in both the influent and effluent samples. The only chemical parameters which failed to show average decreases of less than 90 percent in total effluent samples include: titanium (89 percent), manganese (88 percent), potassium (78 percent), magnesium (64 percent), ammonium nitrogen (57 percent), mercury (46 percent), op DDE (46 percent), and pp DDE (21 percent). Effluent mercury and titanium frequently appeared to be mainly associated with

A Methodology for Determining Land Value and Associated Benefits Created from Dredged Material Containment by E. T. Conrad,Andre J. Pack Pdf

This report presents a step-by-step methodology for determining land values and associated benefits from the productive use of dredged material containment sites. A discussion of productive uses of dredged material sites, their physical characteristics, institutional and legal constraints, and local land demand is included, as well as an overview of property valuation. The methodology is presented and discussed in terms of such parameters as site description, establishment of use potential, value estimation and associated benefits and impacts. Working tables are presented. The resulting land value and the associated benefits and impacts created by dredged material containment should be explicit inputs to the formulation of plans in accordance with Principles and Standards for Water and Related Land Resource Planning and Corps of Engineers regulations. Fifteen case studies of productively used dredged material containment sites were conducted to validate and refine the methodology. One of the case studies was used in this report as a site-specific example of how the methodology can be applied. All fifteen case studies are included as Appendices A through O. (Author).

Needs and Areas of Potential Application of Disposal Area Reuse Management (DARM) by Michael R. Palermo Pdf

The results of a survey of Corps of Engineers (CE) Districts for needs and areas of potential application of Disposal Area Reuse Management (DARM) are documented in this report. Under the DARM concept, disposal areas are regarded as collection and processing sites where dredged material is rehandled within the site or totally removed, thereby increasing or restoring site capacity for subsequent disposal.
