Injuries, The effects of the severe frosts of January-March 1905 are still very evident, trees of many species in large mumbers have all their smaller branches dead, and are sending out new shoots from the stem and larger branches. In the Rawalpindi Division the ban oak is recovering in the above manner and so are phulai and other trees in the hills. In the plains the jhand and karil trees still show signs of the severe frosts. In Kalesar the young sdl damaged has thrown out new shoots. The river Jhelam especially, and the Chenab also are constantly cutting into their banks and washing away forest land. Reference to these erosions is as usual made in the area return (No. 51 attached). No preventive measures are practicable. In Chamba and Kulu snow by its weight does considerable damage by breaking the branches of young deodar poles. In some instances of this kind thickets have been slightly thinned with good results. The disease in the deodar forests at Monali in Kulu brought to notice by Mr. Carroll and mentioned in paragraph 30 of last year's report has been observed by his successor in other forests near Nagar, and specimens of the damaged parts have been sent to Dehra Dun for investigation.
