Promoting Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation by Y. Deng Pdf

Attempts to integrate the Pacific regional economy accelerated sharply with the formation of the regionwide, official Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in 1989. This book probes into the distinctive process of regional cooperation in Asia-Pacific by focusing on the roles and perspectives of China, Japan, and Southeast Asian states. Asian developments shaping the new post-hegemonic global political economy challenge traditional models in international relations, which is here challenged to take East Asia seriously.

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) by Sandra L. Downing Pdf

In 1989, President George Bush was President of the United States the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum was established to promote economic integration around the Pacific Rim and to sustain economic growth. APEC currently has 21 members: Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; Republic of the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; USA; Vietnam. The United States, recognising the value of top-level meetings to advance the work of creating a Pacific community, invited member economies' leaders to Blake Island, Washington, to meet informally to discuss major issues in the APEC region. This gathering of economic leaders has become the single most important institution in the Asia Pacific region. It brings top level attention to APEC's vision of free trade and investment as well as providing a forum for leaders to meet on a regular basis both as a group and bilaterally to discuss current issues and resolve disputes. The economic health of the APEC region is vitally important to America's continued prosperity. Economic growth across the APEC region waned this year, largely in response to the slowing US economy and the weakening global demand for many of the Asian members' exports (particularly electronics). Many members have lowered their 2001 growth projections in light of poor performance during the first half of the year, although most will still post positive results. This compelling book about APEC and its background, goals and problems, provides the reader with the necessary information on the crucial role that it plays. A revived Asia-Pacific region means more exports from and investments by U.S. companies, more jobs for Americans and more U.S. economic growth.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation APEC and Pacific Multilateralism by Tristan Lizardo Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1.0, University of Chile (Facultad de Economía y Negocios), language: English, abstract: The “Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation” (APEC) was established in 1989, and holds 21 so called member economies, all located on the Pacific Rim. Each member represents a particular economic region rather than individual states which is illustrated in Exhibit 1. APEC’s main goal is promoting “sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region” (Achievements and Benefits, 2016). This is supposed to be reached primarily by the establishment of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP). However, APEC is working on many different topics and various alliances have been formed in order to enable free trade and investment, good cooperation among members, regional economic integration, enhancing human security and facilitating a favorable sustainable business environment in the Asia-Pacific. The organization works as a cooperative and multilateral economic trade forum. A defining characteristic of APEC is that it is the only international intergovernmental bundling in the world aiming to reduce trade barriers to trade and investment without postulating legal binding contracts and therefore encourages participation and structural flexibility. APEC has enjoyed great success as an international forum for discussion among the world’s leaders in politics, business and academia. However it has made limited progress in regional integration and cooperation in areas such as financial infrastructure with a slow response time to emerging world trends.

APEC Trade Agenda? The Political Economy of a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific by Charles E Morrison Pdf

The proposal for an Asia-Pacific-wide free trade agreement is one of the oldest ideas for promoting mutually beneficial regional cooperation dating back to the mid-1960s. In more recent times, the idea has found new support for two main reasons: as a plan B to the stumbling Doha Development Agenda (DDA) round of WTO negotiations; and as a solution to the noodle bowl of bilateral agreements in the region. This report assesses the political feasibility of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) proposal and looks at alternative modalities for achieving free trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific. The report includes trade policy perspectives from the three largest economies of the region: the United States, China and Japan, lessons from similar proposals such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), possible convergence among the many preferential trade agreements (PTAs) in the region, and alternative approaches to regional economic integration.

Inclusive Business in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation by Asian Development Bank Pdf

This report illustrates the current state of inclusive business models in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies. APEC, as a regional organization of economies in the Americas and in Asia, is well suited to promote inclusive business (IB) as a new approach to make economic growth more sustainable and more inclusive. While agreements in APEC are mainly related to trade, the governments' agenda in the region for a more inclusive economic development widen the discussions among APEC economies to promote consensus on new strategic economic topics. IB and investing to create impact on people and the environment is one such new and emerging topic. The publication discusses the market potentials, constraints, and necessary policy instruments for an enabling environment for inclusive business. A profile of inclusive business initiatives, the overview of the base of the pyramid market size, and the inclusive business ecosystem in each APEC economy as well as a recommended a framework to guide future work on inclusive business under the APEC regional economic cooperation agenda are also included in this report.

APEC and the Construction of Pacific Rim Regionalism by John Ravenhill Pdf

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) grouping is the first comprehensive economic arrangement to link countries from around the Pacific Rim. Since its establishment in 1989, APEC has graduated from a ministerial-level gathering of nine countries to an institution that stages annual summits, has a permanent secretariat, and whose twenty-one members have committed themselves to establishing free trade in the region. A decade after its foundation, however, members have been increasingly frustrated with the grouping's progress. In this timely book, John Ravenhill examines the reasons for APEC's establishment, its evolution, and the causes of its failures. His conclusions address central questions in international relations about international collaboration and regionalism. The book will interest all those concerned with broader questions about regional economic and political cooperation.
